It was close..... Labour were winning by 10 votes, so had a partional recount. Reform then were winning by 4, Another recount and reform won by 6. - @SimCityAT
It's a split isn't it between the Conservatives and Reform. Looks like the Conservatives are circling the plughole.
Nightmare scenario is Farage becoming UK PM.
Then there's going to be no chance of ever joining the EU in his and my lifetime. Or at least, to quote The Spice Girls, what I really really want, is freedom of movement.
There's an interesting aspect on the EU thing is that the EU countries need the UK for military purposes. So perhaps, overlapping with NATO, we'll see an additional alliance/grouping emerging, i.e. all NATO except Hungary and the USA.
My husband makes passwords that are over 50 characters long;
I have to be super quiet if he should sign in because one mistake and he has to start over.
That is our new most important issue, staying away from evil,,scumbag ,demonic scammers; That is putting it nicely, they should be hung and quartered
Weird thing happened last week which has us concerned.
Hubby went downstairs and noticed 2 young dudes sitting on the stoop with their faces in the phones; Very odd place to sit in the dark.
A few mins later I came down and noticed them as I passed. They did not even look up as I reached over ones head for the railing. Told my husband right away that 2 weirdos were sitting in the dark on their phone; I had a feeling as I left our flat that I should shut off the wifi but forgot to do that;30 mins later my husband went upstairs and saw them still on the phones. He went into our flat and shut off the wifi, came right down and they had left the building;Seemed like they were phishing for data?
I had a pail of water with me as I was going to clean up our car inside; I was so tempted to trip and spill on top of the dude blocking my way down. IDK, listening to your gut feelings is always good;
Seriously though, what in the world were they doing sitting there, do not think they live in our building.
People who steal should have their hands cut off, I agree with that logic. Online scammers should have an eye poked out.
My husband was kicking himself later thinking he should of followed them when they left and taken down the number plate of any car they left in.
Dam them if they were up to no good.
Last night my hubby went alone up to the Taban. Music event, I was not interested in going, been there, done that many times.
Charlie was the closing act. He has lost his voice.
It was more or less an old timers event, other locations had younger entertainers and rock music.
He took the bus home and got off at our stop.
Was walking down our side st; behind a group of 4 young people; One guy and 3 ladies.
He was close behind them but not part of their group.
Out of the darkness a dark guy wearing black popped out from between 2 parked cars. Very odd timing to just pop out of the dark;
My husband was very surprised but the guy just vanished in the darkness without bothering anyone.
Weird though, makes you realize no where is really safe, even walking on your own st.
I told him, little boys have to come home before dark.
I suppose if needed it is best to hire a cab even for a short distance . Our st; has CCTV cameras but they do not protect you after the fact.
I'm hardly surprised right wing groups are getting support.
I have to say, I'm a big fan of controlled immigration that brings value to the UK. That value includes cultural traits and, most importantly, a wide variety of food.
Mmmm, Indian curry.
Imagine how boring the UK would be without Indian, Chinese, and a hundred other nationalities' foods.
However, allowing mass illegal immigration is going to cause problems. We saw that in the riots.
Of course I condemn the moron section of society that is out to destroy, but they are right about illegal immigrants.
If the problem carries on, more and more people will join nutjob political parties until be say hello to Hitler Smith from Basingstoke.
What a night for the elections in England for the council and Mayoral elections.
Big gains for the Reform, but they failed to win 3 Mayors. They did win the by-election by 6 votes. So now they are back to having 5 MPs. - @SimCityAT

Dunno.
There is value to a good curry BUT I'd like to say that the vast majority of Indian restaurants are run by Bangladeshis. Certainly very yummy. I've been in Bangladesh quite a few times. The Indian food in the UK is considerably better but that might just be my tastes.
In my youth - a long time ago - Indian wasn't really on the menu. It was all Chinese made by Hong Kongers and not mainlanders. Here it's all mainlanders. It's pleasing to know that the Indian dish Balti - invented in Birmingham, UK I believe - is being re-exported back to India. Old dogs can teach the young 'uns new stuff apparently.
I'm in favour of immigration especially from the EU to the UK. I'd like people in Europe to mix themselves up.
If Reform UK had any significant influence on immigration, I'd fear the worst. We wouldn't want it to be like Trumpland.
Of course, a lot of us here in the forums are immigrants ourselves.

Surely your WiFi is protected by a password?
If not, it should be.
If it's open, while 99% of people would use it without being up to no good, there's going to be the 1% who abuse the privilege.
The default password should protect you from anyone except the most determined of hackers.
So long as it's not something daft like "12345678" or "password".

I know a lot, and probably a lot more than you, Simon.
45 years there, and I read many UK newspapers every day - Guardian to Mail. Now add Sky and the BBc news sites and live TV programmes, and Radio 4.
As for Indian restaurants, most of the best I bought from were Pakistani, but there was an absolutely excellent one just north of Sheffield that was Bangladeshi.
However, the sod who ran it always beat me at badminton- The git 🤣
They were in the UK legally, but I knew a good number of illegals. However, I didn't much care because they were all working in their particular ethnic food trade that white English didn't want jobs in - and probably couldn't handle the workload anyway. That and not a one claimed anything except an honest day's wage.
That is something I can respect.
They were far removed from people coming to any country and demanding flats, dole, and whatever else they can screw out of the country.
The ethnicity is of no interest to me, but I don't like grabbers.

No-one likes freeloaders but saying all refugees are spongers is far from the truth. Reform selling its version (of the truth) as divisiveness. UK and everywhere "civilised" have obligations to support those running from oppression.
India and Bangladesh are long time friends. India saved them. I've been all around the Bangladeshi war museums. But Pakistan and India are not friends and by extension Bangladesh as we all well know from recent events.
I was always partial to rijsttafel myself - an excellent Indonesia feast served in NL. Obviously ethic from linkages to the Dutch times in Indonesia. Very nice nosh. Never seen it here though. It's rates very highly on my scale of nice Dutch things including vla (custard) and vlaai (a kind of rice cake/flan). I liked krentenbollen as well (a kind of fruit bun) but it was called something else - something like raisin cakes. Rosintimpen maybe. Maybe not the right word.

I worked with refugees for a while before I left the UK.
This was at the very start of the problem times. Most of the people were escaping nasties of various sorts, but there were also purely economic migrants.
I have absolutely no problem with people moving for a better life, but a bunch of these were just grabbers. They were housed and had money for food, but they still toured local shops in a threatening way to demand cash.
This is first hand, not some cretinous ultra right website.
At the same time, I knew loads of Chinese illegals, but they asked for nothing they didn't earn.
I knew who I didn't mind, even respected, and I knew who should have been booted out.
I let a few stay at my place from time to time, and I managed to sneak a bunch away from the coppers when some racist arsehole drunk started a fight. They were all illegal so in danger of deportation, but they were hard working, honest, and decent, so they deserved a helping hand.
Like it or not, there are way too many grabbers out for free cash. Sad as it is, that lot ruin it for the decent ones.
Add that bunch of no goods allow the nutty far right a chance for power, and the UK has plenty of reasons to boot them out.
Writing the above reminded me of an incident just before I left the UK.
A drunk attacked a refugee, the lad can't have been much more than about 14, so I stuck my oar in and made the idiot drunk well aware he should get lost.
I dropped in for my last session with the council run centre the following week, and the heartfelt thanks from the kid and his dad was stunning.
The other one that really sticks was a Buddhist Malaysian girl who I pulled out of the soup. She told me she hoped, upon our deaths, we come back as brother and sister. That was a rather nice thing to say.
Other stayed as friends for years. There was one lady in particular who I had an amazing relationship with. She stayed with me often, and we slept together in two countries, but she only wanted closeness, not sex. We were naked in bed many times, but she trusted me to go no futher than to hold her close. I think she'd had a bad relationship at some point, so just wanted comfort. We were friends until I left the UK and we lost contact.
I miss those times, but I have new memories in the making.
First to note that local election results tend to give an indication of voter feeling, but that doesn't always pan out when it comes to electing MPs.
I took a moment to look at how the results looked, and I was totally shocked at Reform's gains - or maybe not.
In my most humble of opinions, people are totally pissed off at mass illegal immigration are are shouting out, in the form of votes, for the government to do something.
If the Labour government are as stupid as I think they are, they will try to fudge, ignore, argue, and generally bury their heads in the sand until it's far too late and the UK ends up with a far right government.
At the end of the day, humans are still cavemen, and cavemen react badly when an unfamiliar force invades their hunting grounds.
With somewhere around 36,00 illegals arriving by boat in 2024, and anything up to 600 per day adding to the spiralling total, you have to expect a backlash.
Voters have warned the government - We will have to see what happens.

UK hasn't any legitimate way for asylum seekers to get in the country except by small boats. We all know what happens if you demonise minorities or certain types in the population.

Demonising criminals for criminal behaviour is fine.
Imagine 3 men from Somalia
- The first is well educated and ends up in the UK legally doing a productive job.
- The second comes in illegally, but works in a Somali restaurant, never asking for anything he doesn't earn through honest labour.
- The third is also illegal, but he stays in a UK government funded hotel, and lives on UK government handouts.
I only object the the lazy grabber, not the minority as a group.
Anyway, our opinions are of little consequence because the UK electorate has sent a clear message - change your policies or you might well be out on your ears in favour of a far right nutter.
That's the dangerous result of an idiotic policy on illegal immigration.

Yes, it is protected by a password, code . Guess that is the down side of being raised in commie days, you think everyone is after you. Hard to trust anyone as the walls have ears.
At times we get frustrated with internet; My husband and I never learned to use it in school and what we know we learned on our own.
He does know they have scammers in cars that sit outside buildings and try to get into peoples accounts and mail.
Saw a video on how people in the US are even scamming poor food stamp recipients . They put some sort of card reader on the check out machines in stores and steal their monthly allotment of food.
The US gov; is considering putting chips in the cards so it is not so easy to scam.
Hard to believe the US gov; has allowed themselves to fall victim to scammers.
Food stamps, forgot to explain before;
Not sure when the program started but in the 70,s they were a coupon book with a dollar figure printed on them; You used them like real money.
Not allowed to buy any household cleaning products, alcohol and cigs with them. Also no pre cooked hot foods from a deli.
Now they send out a card, looks like a credit card, still no cigs or alcohol allowed but they even can now use them in restaurants and fast food places. That is what I heard at least.
The food stamp program probably started in the 1960,s. Many Hippies were on them.
My mother refused to get them. never wanted anyone, not even a store clerk to give her the side eye. Instead we ate allot of soup and hot dogs.Powered milk and store band everything growing up.

My web browser saves passwords securely so I don't have to type them in. It has a master password to access the browser database of stored passwords. It's quite useful because I can back up the password database to an online service in an encrypted form.
The chances of some yobbo nerds hacking your WiFi is almost zero. They'd have to hang out for a while sampling your WiFi traffic. I doubt they've got the patience. BTW, you could look into the high frequency systems to move youth on from the area. Older folks cannot hear those frequencies so aren't annoyed but youths can hear them and it irritates them. Classic music annoys them too. Apparently it's very effective. Might annoy people's dogs.
The one time use card from one of the card companies is quite common now. I didn't know they used them for food stamps. But those particular cards are often used as a security measure. Even if the numbers are known, the cards expire very quickly and then the info is useless. It's quite a good idea but it is at a cost. Those physical cards are not for free and it must be making Visa and Mastercard etc an absolute fortune. Of course, they can issue virtual cards to use on your phone. It's a bit like the throwaway sim cards used in mobile telecoms. I'm trying to get my phone sim cards turned into e-sims, so I don't need the physical card in the phone.
The only thing I'd say about those payment methods on the phone is the savings on using the right exchange rate - not via a local bank or retailer - can be stunning. I literally just looked at an air ticket cost and it was like £220 on the airline based exchange rate but doing it in local HUF currency, to be converted by the card issuer/bank, it was like £195. That's a whopping saving!
I remember my parents used to get given Luncheon Vouchers as a perk or daily food expenses while on the move. They were a bit like food stamps but were not exchangeable for cash or goods (supposedly). Only for food. My Dad used to save them up and we'd get a Chinese takeaway once in a while. I always looked forward to those occasions.
Those US food stamp cards are filled up each month automatically.
Whatever you do not use the month before is just added on for the next month.
You can use them for up to 30 days if you move to a different state but after that you must register in your new state.
I think after 30 days one is considered a resident of another state .
I know you have 30 days to register your car in a new state.
States like Hawaii though make it longer to be a resident; Guess they do not want hoards of people moving there and getting gov;.aid. Think it is 6 months over there?

Maybe we can get Clint Eastwood to be the master of ceremonies once they place is fixed up and ready for,Business.

My parents and younger siblings visited there when it was open for tourists.

This is even more bonkers. It's an monument now. Mrs F and I tried to go but you have to book ages in advance and we couldn't get a slot on a tour. It'll cost a huge amount to resurrect it and besides, there are other, more modern places to lock up the criminals. Cost per prisoner is going to be loads. Why not just execute them and save the cash? That will be the next big Trump idea.
@fluffy2560
Reason why it was closed.
High Operating Costs: Alcatraz was nearly three times more expensive to operate than other federal prisons, with daily per capita costs reaching $10.10 compared to $3.00 at USP Atlanta.
Deteriorating Infrastructure: The island's buildings had been severely eroded by half a century of salt water saturation.

Yup, it's real, I'm all caught up now. There entire thing is short on detail and fundamentally a misunderstanding of the entire film production process. They cannot replicate Thailand or Italy or all of Hogwarts in a studio and it's obvious if it's digitally produced. Quality will suffer. Netflix has permanent studios in the UK. They aren't going to like their investment being degraded.
I read that John Voight, Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson are Trump's advisors. So that's a well known religious nut, a Trumpist Republican washed up star and a drunk anti-Jewish/anti-British has-been. I rest my case.

Yup, another attention seeking BS from the Teflon Don.
They could just build something like an oil platform or use old cruise ships. It'll never work anyway. Apparently there's a glut of space in the federal jail system.
But it's probably one of his off the wall suggestions because there's no chance he'll be able to deport US citizens criminals to El Salvador etc.
Get Elon Musk on it - such a project is DOGE ripe.

Yes, Trump needs to get his big boy head in the game rather than just childishly riffing off whoever met him last.
We're only at 100 days and there's more than 1000 to go. There's plenty of time for more madness. I wonder if there's enough resistance building to contain him like last time.
He favours handing the crown to Vance and Rubio. Vance is an idiot yes man and Rubio is clearly not someone comfortable with what he as to put up with.
I would have thought Lucie could have intervened to prevent Desi's ejection from the US. Maybe they should consider deporting his remains (if they can find them).

But there are spare cells in prisons across America, so there is no need for a new prison. Alcatraz doesn't even have running water.
It would cost billions to to bring it up today. Practically having it demolished and start again. But I'm not sure that would be possible because it's some kind of listed building/monument.
@fluffy2560Reason why it was closed.High Operating Costs: Alcatraz was nearly three times more expensive to operate than other federal prisons, with daily per capita costs reaching $10.10 compared to $3.00 at USP Atlanta.Deteriorating Infrastructure: The island's buildings had been severely eroded by half a century of salt water saturation. - @SimCityATYup, another attention seeking BS from the Teflon Don.They could just build something like an oil platform or use old cruise ships. It'll never work anyway. Apparently there's a glut of space in the federal jail system. But it's probably one of his off the wall suggestions because there's no chance he'll be able to deport US citizens criminals to El Salvador etc.Get Elon Musk on it - such a project is DOGE ripe. - @fluffy2560But there are spare cells in prisons across America, so there is no need for a new prison. Yes, possibly a national park monument and protected in some way.
It's kind of interesting (well, not much) that this is another Trump view of the world as everything being a real estate deal. So simplistic. It's like if your problems are like nails, every solution looks like a hammer.
If it does get renovated, I'm sure his friends and eventually all the mini-Trumps minions are going to benefit financially from it. The guy has no ethics or morals regarding public service - advertising Tesla cars and blatantly making money of his crypto-currency. It could simply be a diversion from the idiocy of the China tariffs and car manufacturing tariff nonsense. Bring out the tough on crime meme to rile up the "electorate".
I found it interesting that iPhone production is being moved to India. Apart from saving Apple money, what hand did Vance have in it?
I previously said, 3 months before it implodes and that was several weeks ago. I think my prediction is still on track. I reckon, Rubio is going to go next but I'm also beginning to think of odds on Hegseth being forced out.
I also see the Armed Forces parade is being set up to actively coincide with the Orange Blob's birthday. WTF is that about? Putin-lite? Dear Leader-lite? FFS!

Does he go to bed and dreams up these weird and strange ideas? Before even consulting anyone he just posts on social media, not like he would even listen to any advice given to him anyway.

Yes I think so.
It's partially whoever he talked to last, maybe aspects of dementia and some kind of delusion of grandeur.
I believe - from reports - no-one dares step out of line so there's no constraints on him. He has no-one trying to keep him on track. I really don't know if he can finish his term as eventually the Republicans have to realise he's a massive liability to good governance. It's supposed to be "We The People....", not "I The Trump...."
That plonker Roberts in SCOTUS caused a lot of this. He effectively gave him unrestricted power. He naively thought the courts could restrain Trump and his disciples. But they cannot. They cannot even get them to obey rulings from Fed judges. They've no way to control him. There are a couple of others in SCOTUS who are probably corrupt. But there's no way Trump would nominate a Liberal judge to the bench, if any of them die or resign, it'll be even worse.
There are some parallels with the kind of thing with Orban. He has delusions of grandeur and thinks people really like his policies but the voting is going the other way. Eventually people will get sick of it but it takes perhaps 10-15 years. But at least 50% of the population want him out. The other 50% out in the countryside must be many sandwiches short of a picnic and incapable of independent thought.
It absolutely pisses me off that us lot here at Fluffy Towers have to live in a place which is run on the manic and unreasonable delusions of a single man.
@fluffy2560
If they do get rid of him, you then have Vance.
Trump isn't all there as you know......

That about covers it. He's nuts.
His ballroom is the height of kitsch. It's faux French and a faux pas.
If it glitters, it must be gold right? It shows he has no taste.
