What is life really like in Hungary for an expat ?

maximolatrell

Hi everyone,

Glad to be here. I’ve been reading through the forum for a while and finally decided to join.

I’m interested in Hungary because I’d like to learn more about daily life there, especially what it’s really like beyond the usual travel impressions. I’m particularly curious about things like the cost of living, local culture, how easy it is to settle in, and what expats usually find most surprising once they arrive.

At the moment I’m still in the information-gathering stage, so I’m hoping to learn from people who already have experience living there. I always find it more helpful to hear honest opinions from real people than just read general guides.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone and learning from your experiences.

Best wishes to all.

Welcome,

Going by your profile, you're a German citizen? Which is good because, as you are an EU citizen, you have the freedom of movement, so you don't have to worry about visas.

Recently the country had an election, so hopelly it will make the country a better place and wages will increase. You haven't said what your profession is. One hurdle you might have is the laungage. Close to the border with Austria people do speak German. Not everyone speaks English.

For context, as of early 2026, a 100 m² villa with three bedrooms and a garden in Buda typically starts from approximately €400,000, depending on its condition.
