Films to watch & to look out for

We all know that Reality TV is pretty much staged, that's why it's never live or even 5-minute delayed.

I have no idea. There are a lot of so called celebrities around who most people have never heard of.
Fame is of course fleeting. It's hard to know how people can keep re-inventing themselves to remain relevant. I guess once they have like 20-years of fame, they reach national treasure status. I am thinking of people like Rod Stewart.
I don't like Sharon Osbourne anyway. I think she's really pushy.
She is very pushy but if not for her, Ozzie might of died off in the 70,s.
Her father was a music promoter and had to be a pushy guy in that industry.
She learned from the master.
Check out their old tv show if you can find it.
Sometimes it made you really wonder how he could put on his pants without her.
I used to love Rod Stewart, saw them live in HS when he played with The Small Faces. That time was his prime time.

Yes, that's true. Perhaps she pushed to keep him alive. He was clearly completely bonkers until he got older. I think towards the end he probably didn't know which way was up.
Rod Stewart is a great survivor. My sister said he was on some TV show in the UK doing a concert and she said it was just fabulous. He's still got it apparently and he's in his 80s. He likes the ladies and has many kids but lived a clean life - no drugs, booze etc. Just his kids and his hobby of model railways. He didn't party after a concert, he just went home and worked on his trains!

I personally am done with old Rod.
I mentioned before how pissed off he made me.
Summer of 1975, some 3 day music event, we attended on the day, Fleetwood Mac, played with Rod suppose to close the day.
I was 5 months pregnant and the hot sun was beating on us all day long in the stands.
Waited it out to see Rod, thought it would be worth the pain.
Jerk comes out, sings less then half a song and walks off stage!
He did not like the sounds system, Was good enough for Stevie Nicks but not for Rod. Prima Donna!f After that I never bought another of his LPs, never listened to a full song of his, just turned my guts. Gave me heat stroke every time I hear his voice.
My sisters old UK BF was a super nice, talented guy in Ca; He had his own bi plane and loved flying and gliding.
Worked as a film editor for Hanna Barbara studios.
Made good money, even my husband the stoic liked the guy allot; They had some good chats over moms Sunday dinners and used to kick a football around in the yard, laughed had fun; We really wanted her to marry him, he offered more then once, not sure what the problem was with her not saying yes.
Anyways he was part of a small group of guys from the UK who played football on weekends; Rod Stewart was part of the group; Her BF never allowed her to come and watch though, guess he did not want the competition?
Guess they dated for a couple years, I was visiting her overnight with my baby son when they broke up one night; Never saw a grown guy flip out so much. He was crazy about her and nearly tore the door down.
I grabbed my son and was ready to climb on the roof of the second floor if he broke into the house.
Long story, he helped pay for her funeral years later, he never forgot her.
Another time when she was out to dinner with a guy at some nice place in Beverly Hills or there about,, some posh place, she saw Rod with friends eating at another table; She had to pass by them to go to the ladies. As she walked by, Rod started singing , Hot Legs. Funny, she did not turn back just kept on going . She was 5 foot 10 with super long legs so it was fitting I suppose.
Sorry I can not stand him.
Re watched a film last night from 1991.
I saw it when it was first released in the theaters and had read the book before that.
Raise the Red Lantern. A Chinese production.
Very good and very interesting, moody, sad and very colorful.
Watched, Ship of Fools last night.Seems like we are all aboard looking at world events. - @Marilyn Tassy
I also watched this 1965 movie and it was actually pretty good. It's a melodrama and social message at the same time. Set in 1933, it foretells in some way the rise of Nazis amongst the trivial lives of the weird band of passengers on a ship from Mexico to Germany.
I feel like I've (re-)discovered Simone Signoret and Oskar Werner as actors. I really liked the character of the dwarf played by Michael Dunn. He plays the conscience of the misfits. He's was very good but died young. filming in the UK.
Vivien Leigh is in it too but I did not think much of her. She didn't add much to the story.

This is at the top of my “dumb popcorn movies when I’m feeling like turning my brain off” pile. Kevin James of Paul Blart: Mall Cop fame joins Alan Ritchson (Reacher) and Alan Tudyk (Resident Alien) in this screwball comedy about a man on the run and the people who get dragged into his wake. Ritchson looks like he’s having a blast here, which is a nice change from his turn as Jack Reacher.

Being Eddie
2025
Action / Biography / Documentary

Fans of comedian and actor Eddie Murphy will want to check out this new celebrity documentary on #Netflix. You’ll learn a lot about Murphy and how much of an impact he’s had on Hollywood. Also, you might find yourself wanting to rewatch Shrek.
Last Samurai Standing

This is at the top of my list for shows to watch this weekend because it looks incredible. Sometimes all you want is a great story about people fighting to the death with swords. Last Samurai Standing is a battle-royale series set in the late 1800s in Japan’s Meiji era, when 291 samurai join a fight to the death at a Temple in Kyoto. The choreography looks absolutely stunning. Fans of Squid Game should probably give this one a look. #Netflix

Yes, Rod is into football.
Not everyone can claim Rod Stewart annoyed them. He does have a specific type he's after, long leggy models.
I suppose everyone has a type they like.
Look at Trump, he likes the blondie types. Many of his female sycophants are the same or similar - his wife, daughter or his deceased ex-wife. Bondi and Levitt's type is the same. That's how they get hired - not for their intellectual capacity. Nome is not quite the same but if she ever got in trouble with Trump, she'd just need to go blonde and all will be forgiven.
And previously I mentioned Linda Evans and Bo Derek. Like clones and both shacked up with John Derek. Typecasting!

I strongly recommend comedy show Resident Alien with Alan Tudyk. It's a totally loopy story and everyone pulls it off very well.
I first saw Alan Tudyk in Death at a Funeral. He did a really excellent British accent. So much so, I wondered why I'd never heard of him. He is of course, an American. A rare situation where a US actor can pass off an accent as British. In most circumstances, they sound like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins. That's the definitive low point in accent skills. Usually I see British or Australian actors trying on American accents. They sound OK to me but I reckon an American would detect the fakery easily.

Yes Bo and Linda looked like clones of each other.
I got very lucky when I met my husband way back when.
He looked like a rocker but held a real steady job and was not a wild ,loud ,rude person.
Really stoic and funny when needed; Hard working, not selfish ,life of the party if he was in the mood, just an overall good guy that looked like a cuter version of a young Rod Stewart, type. Very different looking from anyone else around in Ca; Not your typical surfer type.
Very family oriented person too.
Rod could and cannot hold a candle to how cool my husband is.
He gets on with just about anyone, no matter their background; He has a way of finding common ground with anyone.
Watched some lame film last night starring Mia Farrow and Rock Hudson.
He was only 52 at the time of filming but to me he looked close to 20 years older;
Not sure why but that generation aged so fast.
I already forgot the name of the film, that is how lame it was, some disaster at a ski resort.
Think my mind was somewhere else watching it.
Funny to see the hairstyles and clothing from 1978. What were we thinking??

Interesting. Really against Rod then! I don't really like Frank Sinatra much although I was OK with him in the movies. Some of his dirge like singing really had me reaching for the off button. "When I was just seventeen, it was a very good year"....like who the hell wrote that? What a terrible song. Mrs F and I laugh when that comes on the radio or TV. Ideal for taking the mickey. "When I was 34, I came to Hungary, ...it was a very good year".. Haha!
Ah, 1970s. I had to get some new jeans and I remember telling my mother that I wouldn't wear them unless they were flares. What planet was I on? I wouldn't be seen anywhere public wearing flared jeans now.
The movie you're thinking of is called Avalanche. I liked Rock Hudson. I was always interested in his "romance" with Doris Day. I thought they were really an ideal couple and life was really like that in CA with station wagons and pretty houses . Haha, little did I know! A lot of my notions of those times were made up from those kinds of films. And pirate movies like with Burt Lancaster or Stewart Granger. Mia Farrow traded on her waif like appearance but she was only memorable (to me) in Rosemary's Baby. Looking back, my entire life has been controlled by Hollywood.

Yes, this was it!
I wanted to not think too deeply I suppose, light mental energy needed to watch this one!
Probably was rated R for the stupid nudity in the movie. Did nothing to help the story line.
Yes, Rod the Sod! IDK, his ego just seems way to large for what he offers.
Frank Sinatra, sort of should thank him for breaking our mother in about teen girls going crazy for singers.
Mom used to wear her Bobby socks in the early 1940s and run after Franks tour bus with other insane teens.
She said her generation, was the first to have clothing just for teens; Before then a person went straight from child,s clothing to adult style. I am stuck dressing younger then my years, missed the boat on adult clothing. Mom was a jitter bugger, saddle shoes and all.
I would look so silly if I wore those dresses and suits that are for the over 65 crowd. I am too tall and slim and those styles look like a sack on me. I had the hardest time finding a suit for my airline interview in the 80s; I looked so odd in the suits with shoulder pads that were cut very straight.
I found an over priced Christain Dior suit and had to buy that; Wore it less then 4 times in my life, the interview and a funeral.
Just a while ago I found some white flared jeans for 500 forints at the farmers market, one of the stalls sold used clothing, some still with store tags on them; They were just there sitting on top of a pile of clothing waiting for me; Fit better then some jeans from brand name shops. I would probably never even look for white bell bottom jeans in a store but it was meant to be. Flare jeans, have to be in a mood to pull them off though!

Train Dreams. The trailer is visually stunning but don't know about the story - a romance about the woods, trains and people.

Good tip!
Great cast in that movie. Andrea Riseborough is likely to be a superstar. She's done quality work previously.

Mrs F and I think everyone dons a uniform in their 50s. Women get their hair cut shorter and put on those kind of flowery blouses/smocks and trousers. You see them everywhere. Hard to see someone who is not conforming to that standard. In my Dad's day they all had brown jackets with patches on their arms. And they even wear ties just for slumming around the house. Like why?
I've stopped wearing more formal clothing. As I spend time in warm countries I now wear black jeans and Hawaiian style shirts. I've gone all Pacific. Seems silly in winter to wear short sleeves but here in Fluffy Towers, it's t-shirts and hoodies all day, everyday.
@fluffy2560
Also has Dame Helen Mirren, who is an amazing actress in my eyes.

Agreed. Totally superstar.
My fave Helen Mirren role is the version playing in Mobland as the wife of mob boss Pierce Brosnan.
She puts on a very plausible Irish accent.
If you haven't seen Mobland, I can recommend it. It's really violent but it's part of the story. A second season is in development.

I guess I now know why I am stared at all the time.
I refuse to dress for my age.
I used to love wearing old lady style vintage clothing when I was young but now days, I avoid it like the plague.
People may not know it is vintage and think I actually wanted to look old.
I need a big toss out of unworn items, like suits etc.
I only have a few vintage items from the 1940s left. Sold most back in Vegas at a vintage shop.
I need to get on one of those resale apps and sale my cowboy, girl boots. Too nice to toss out and too uncomfortable to wear in the city for walking around. Hate to give them away for nothing since they are barely used and cost a few bucks to purchase; Guess brand and classic US western boots. I just need a horse!
I like to dress my husband but he does his own thing; Like a classic look on an older man, turtle neck sweater, jacket, pair of jeans or nice slacks with good leather shoes.
I remember those tweed jackets with patches on the elbows, most science or math teachers wore those.
One Battle After Another - solid cast but billed oddly as a dark comedy (and action thriller).
It's in cinemas but it won't be long before it's on a streaming platform or elsewhere- @fluffy2560
Saw this movie and it wasn't bad. It has some odd "comedy" moments. There's some good photography and stylistic direction. It's getting good reviews but I would rate it as slightly better than average.

I watched this movie this afternoon. The first half is glacially slow and I nearly gave up. I was attracted because of the cast but I began to wonder if they and I had made a mistake with spending time on this movie. The whole thing changes up a gear and gets going in final 45-60m. Was it worth it? Probably, but a good 45m could be cut out to up the pace. You need real patience but maybe that's the entire point. Essentially the first part you're watching the kettle heating up and in the final section, you're seeing it boil over. The payoff is minimal or negative for the film characters apart from those getting fame on social media. Only you can decide your net return on the time spent watching this.
Udo Keir (RIP 1944-2025), died age 81 last Sunday. He was one of my favourite German film actors (for me, Bruno Ganz particularly). Udo appeared in many films (200) with many turkeys but he also was in some great films made by great directors.

Stranger Things returns for Season 5 on Netflix tonight. This was a major hit for Netflix and resurrect the careers of Winona Ryder and produced stardom to the others.
There are 8 episodes in total. They are split in three parts - 4 episodes tonight, 3 on Christmas Day and Finale New Years Eve). The cast is the same but also considerably older than they were when it first started eons ago. Presumably they'll be playing adult versions of their characters. The series started in 2016 - 9 years ago.

Death by Lightning on Netflix 6 Nov. Filmed in Budapest.- @fluffy2560
I watched this and it was quite good. It relies heavily on the actors who make the best of it.
It was filmed in Hungary for sure as I literally recognised the area where they filmed the farmhouse scenes. We walk the dog there. I know the area really well. Many Netflix shows have been made in that area. It's only about 3 miles away from my house.
Weird thing is we came across the "aftermath" of the set. We could see where they placed buildings etc. It was a long time ago - perhaps 18 months. It's quite interesting it's taken so long to get it on the screen.

I have that Jingle Bell Heist in my list too.
BTW, one of my fave "anti-Christmas" (sort of) movies is black comedy Bad Santa.
It has a very similar theme to this one.
I throughly recommend Bad Santa. It's absolutely bonkers but everyone does their parts really well.
I just saw there's a Bad Santa 2. It's now on my list to watch both 1 and 2 together.
