Films to watch & to look out for

fluffy2560

Watched the 2003 film, Master and Commander last night.Saw it before, well worst a second or even third view.Love period pieces and this film seemed to bring you back in time. - @Marilyn Tassy

I liked that movie BUT I heard a review and the writer had absolutely no connection to the sea or any experience as a Naval historian about the period.  I still really liked the movie though!  I was however left wanting more.

Maybe you should watch Mutiny on the Bounty.  It's a super 1962 film with top stars - Trevor Howard and Marlon Brando and Richard Harris.  One of my all time faves.  It was a major significantly important film for Brando. It ended up with him moving to his own island in Tahiti but tragedy followed post-Brando.  The back story is pretty interesting.

I must of seen Mutiny on the Bounty, every version of it at least a half dozen times each.

Love those types of films.

Can not really stand sci-fi films, I love a strong dose of history or real life movies. Period pieces are my thing.

Fantasy is not my thing, Dracula is about as far out as I can get. Who knows however if that is reality. Met many vampires in my lifetime. They just walk during the day!

Been viewing far too many true life crime videos, have to give it a break because it is hard to digest how much pure evil there is out there.

Hard to sleep peacefully after watching a video about murder.

Speaking of Brando,my sister as mentioned many times, knew a slew of odd people.

One of her old BF,s was friends with Christian Brando. Same guy was friends with a couple guys for the band 9 inch Nails.

Sister met Christian through her BF; Just a real messed up family with is sister and her BF and him murdering the BF.

I have no idea how, why of for what purpose but my sister knew a ton of semi famous nut cases.

Her last BF,s mother was the BFF of Leona Helmsley!

She helped my sisters idiot BF, pot smoking druggie get a great painting contract in Ca; He and his crew would smoke and paint all night long; Medical office s. They painted at night when no one was around except perhaps a building security guard. Leona helped her friends, son get set before his mother passed from cancer.

I know they were vampires, working all night long, sleeping all day.

Plus they BF of my sister is the reason she is dead now.

At least no one can tell me different.

He knew she had serious lung issues and asthma yet he encouraged her to quit her day time office job so she could hang with the crew at night and paint. No good for her lungs.

She died alone in an office building while waiting on him to check out a job.

Come to think of it, I recall it was the same idiot BF who also knew Brando,s son and 9 inch Nails.

The same jerk who wanted my sisters ashes to spread on the horset rack!

Demons.

Many versions if of "Monty on the Bonty".

And yes, that's right, Christian Brando shot his sister's BF dead.  It was all very nasty and sordid.  And the sister, Cheyenne killed herself and she was 8 months pregnant.  Christian himself died quite young.  Dunno about Nine Inch Nails.

One wonders if Marlon's "wife" (she was in the Bounty movie) thought meeting Marlon was the worst thing that happened to her.   I put "wife" in quotes as they were never actually married. She did get a hotel/guest house and private island out of it though.  Maybe they loved each other.

Brando thought the Tahitians were unable to cope with the US and he banned his Tahitian kids from the USA. They were too trusting he said.  Simplistic but who knows for sure.

Kind of reminds of the Kennedys and their run of bad luck seeming almost genetically fateful.  Almost like the Final Destination movies where the grim reaper is not too far behind all the main characters.  Some people just have unlucky lives.

Meanwhile, so far, we're not seeing any genetically programmed disaster prone issues befalling Trump.  But give it time.  From what I'm seeing and hearing on news reports, he looks like he's got serious medical problems.  Rambling speeches, lack of memory, confusion over countries, lack of comprehension, unable to recall basic facts,  bruised hands etc (aspirin or an IV?).  It could be the media hyping it up and me being optimistic.   I've seen enough people with dementia in real life now to know these are signs but not a proper diagnosis.  But one lives in hope he'll be gone soon enough.  What comes next, no-one knows.

Got this one queued up - Silence from 2016. It's a period piece.
The key elements on my selection are the cast, the Japanese connection and Martin Scorsese.

It's a fairly old film.   There's a good chance of finding it.  I just download them anonymously.  I've already got it.

Netflix costs about 4K HUF a month.  Is it worth it?  Maybe.

There are many films but some of them are rubbish.  There's a bit of a theme with some real turkeys.  They seem to have the Canal+ library now. It might get better with ongoing studio acquisitions and libraries.

There are three major feature films based on the 1789 mutiny on the HMS Bounty. These well-known versions span from 1935 to 1984, each featuring different leading actors as Fletcher Christian.

  1. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935): Starring Clark Gable as Fletcher Christian and Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh.

  1. Mutiny on the Bounty (1962): Starring Marlon Brando as Fletcher Christian and Trevor Howard as Captain Bligh.

  1. The Bounty (1984): Starring Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian and Anthony Hopkins as Lieutenant William Bligh.

While these are the three main Hollywood adaptations, early silent versions, TV, and other smaller productions exist, including In the Wake of the Bounty (1933), featuring Errol Flynn.

I like Netflix originals, and it's great working with a VPN because each country has different licenses, so it has different films and programmes for each country. I don't pay every month as I have a break. But I have a full year of Disney+ paid up. We no longer have Sky, we can watch ORF ON on the TV, which is Austria's version of BBC iPlayer

We've got 200+ channels on Telekom network as part of our "whole telecoms" package but TBH, most of them are dross and not worth the electricity it costs to transmit them.  Things like Discovery and Animal Planet are OK.  But some channels on YT are now better.  Some of the channels are dual language.  We do watch Netflix but some of the Netflix movie productions are not very good.  Sometimes I think they haven't planned it out properly or are making up the scripts as they go along.

Some series are good - I like the Scandinavian cop shows.  But I like old movies anyway.  Usually from the 60s and 70s.   I am not put off by them being in a foreign language. I do not watch movies with dubbing.  I really loathe that. I'd rather it was in the original with subtitles.

With these streaming services, it's all very fragmented.   We could end up paying 20K HUF a month if we subscribed to all of them.  That's outrageously expensive for what it is.   I am very annoyed the monthly cost of our telecoms services is becoming quite obscene as a proportion of our outgoings.  We're paying like 55K HUF a month for all mobiles, all TV channels and all internet.  It's far too much for what it is.   If they knocked off 20K and cut it down to 40 or 50 channels, I might be less of a complainer.  I never watch them but Mrs F and the kids do. I wouldn't care if we didn't have the TV channels.

Really?  "Faith-based"?    Cannot see that appealing to anyone outside of evangelical communities of the USA.

Maybe it's a Vicar of Dibley moment.

I will give it a go, I've noticed that was a AI generated discrimination.

IMDb version: Freshly divorced Lori and recently widowed minister Malcolm, friends with teens, navigate singlehood while questioning if their longstanding bond hints at a romantic future.

It's from the writers of:

I looked up the Wonder Project and I just thought,  Mein Gott, that's got to be like a Hallmark production company run by evangelical TV preachers.  What a turn off. It will appeal to some but I can imagine it's cringey preachy with a hidden subtext creepily pointing towards Jesus at every turn.

This one takes the biscuit - Melania.

What to know about the Melania Trump documentary

I cannot see this getting any traction at all.

A movie about a dingbat President and his First Lady Barbie trophy wife.

It might do box office in the USA but in Europe, maybe Slovenia, but not a chance anywhere else.  I wouldn't be surprised if some chains refused to show it.

Unless I've missed the entire point and it's some kind of tragicomedy.  Or it's about work surfaces in kitchens using the somewhat dodgy material,  Melamine.

Amazon paid for this.  Absolutely bonkers budget of $75M.  Bezos clearly trying to butter his own bread by cosying up to Donny.

It's failing in the USA, some cinemas have axed it because of no pre-booked sales. $27m she got paid. $30m to make it and $25 to promote it. (something like that) As anyone cares, they will have got some backhand deals out of it from Trump. The whole system is so corrupt that it needs a president with some balls to reform the whole system.

Unfamiliar - a German (language) spy thriller (on Netflix and elsewhere).   6 episodes.

I've watched episode 1 and the apartment fight scene was well done (warning: nasty and brutal).

There are high production values and written by a UK screenwriter (who worked on the soap Emmerdale apparently). Sound quality is a bit off and they mumble.  But it's not a stopper and it looks like this one will run to a number of seasons.

MV5BM2FkOTJlMTItYjlmYy00ZmRiLTg5YjUtMmJiMzgyZGYwZGMzXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_FMjpg_UX582_.jpg

A modern reimagining, the series follows a young couple, Samira (Keke Palmer) and Rob (Jack Whitehall), who move into Rob's childhood home in the "safest town in America". Their lives are upended when a mysterious neighbour moves in across the street, triggering an investigation into the dark, hidden secrets of their cul-de-sac.

Yet another movie made into a TV show.  There's a trend there.

Interesting Jack Whitehall keeps turning up in movies now. I watched the trailer.  Jack Whitehall doing his native British accent is kind of hard to reconcile with the "childhood" home description.

Mark Proksch is a great deadpan guy. Loved him in "What We Do In The Shadows".  I'd watch it just to see him.

8 episodes, all available now.

I wonder why it's called Hamnet.  Maybe the network of intrigue around Hamlet. Endless interest in Shakespeare.  We did it at school.  I was always wondering what the fuss was about.

Until I saw "The Taming of the Shrew" movie with Burton and Taylor.

Made a lasting impression on me as a piece of cinema.  Maybe their performances mirrored their relationship.  I always underrated Taylor until I saw her in that movie.  It showed neither Burton and Taylor were lightweights.

Jessie Buckley (in Hamnet) was always destined for stardom.  I'd seen her in other things and it was clear she had something special.

I wonder why it's called Hamnet. - @fluffy2560

The book (and film) Hamnet is named after William Shakespeare’s only son, Hamnet Shakespeare, who died in 1596 at the age of 11. The title highlights the tragic, often overlooked story behind one of the greatest playwrights in history, specifically exploring the theory that his son's death heavily influenced the writing of Hamlet.
