Adolescence star Owen Cooper makes history at Emmys

Just 14 at the time of filming, Cooper had never acted before landing the role in the mini series that prompted a national conversation on misogyny and online safety.
Owen Cooper, the star of TV drama Adolescence, has made history becoming the youngest to win an outstanding supporting actor Emmy.
Cooper, who is 15, played Jamie Miller in the highly-acclaimed Netflix series set in Liverpool.
Adolescence, which dominated Netflix's most-watched list earlier this year, centres on the story of a 13-year-old boy arrested for the murder of a classmate.
It won a total of four Emmys in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Cooper was just 14 at the time of filming Adolescence and had never acted before.
In his acceptance speech he said he was "nothing three years ago".
"It's just so surreal. Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn't expect to be even in the United States, never mind here.
"So I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life."
The four-part mini-series provoked a strong response from viewers and prompted a conversation in the UK - and worldwide - around misogyny and online safety, with co-creator Jack Thorne joining Prime Minister Keir Starmer for a discussion on the matter at the end of March.
It was also widely praised for its filming techniques, with each episode captured in one continuous take.
Cooper's co-star Erin Doherty (who played Jamie's therapist) won best supporting actress in a limited series, director Philip Barantini took home the Emmy for outstanding directing for a limited or anthology series or movie, while writers Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham won for outstanding writing in the same category.
Gyllenhaal's gift
Before the awards ceremony, Cooper, from Warrington, had been surprised by his acting hero Jake Gyllenhaal, who walked in unannounced during an interview he was giving to press.
The pair hugged, and Gyllenhaal gave Cooper a small gift - a "lucky duck".
"I made this movie [Brokeback Mountain], and I got nominated for an Academy Award, and a friend of mine sent me this before. Something just like this," he said.
"It's just a 'Lucky Duck' to keep in your pocket. To give you a little bit of luck."

It was all good in Adolescence. But was it worth an Emmy? Possibly. I thought Cooper was obviously acting in most scenes. He only really got going in later episodes where he showed what he was made of. Can he pull off another winner? I dunno, child stars don't really get careers into adulthood. Some do, but not that many.
Stephen Graham is a very good actor. I can see him become a national treasure. The supporting cast in and director of Adolescence was good too so praise for them for their work was well deserved.
It's the kind of story you can only see once. No surprises 2nd time.

Oh I know. It's a bit of a coup to do that.
I think it'd work transplanted in the Western world where there are very similar belief and cultural systems.
I don't know if would work elsewhere where there are significant cultural differences.
I mean, in the current Afghanistan they would not understand it at all. That's just a extreme example.

Black Rabbit, Netflix review — Jude Law and Jason Bateman’s edgy restaurant drama follows in The Bear’s footsteps
Two brothers who founded a trendy eatery are drawn into a murky underworld in this splashy New York noir
The high-stress restaurant drama market may appear to be saturated, but Black Rabbit takes the earnest striving of The Bear and darkens its palette by adding more New York grit, a pinch of Safdie brothers-esque criminality and a smattering of music industry swagger. It is stylish, violent and perfectly serviceable, but somehow, when it swings big, it ends up feeling a little less than the sum of its parts.
Jude Law plays Jake Friedkin, a big name on the Manhattan restaurant scene, famous for running the Black Rabbit, a “hip downtown hang” frequented by celebrities and much loved by food critics. He is ready to capitalise on its recent success and expand by moving it to a more prestigious location. However, as the explosive series opener makes clear, his business is a house of cards, only questionably legal, with plenty of enemies waiting to blow it all down.
One problem comes in the form of Friedkin’s deadbeat brother, Vince (a bearded Jason Bateman, in full wisecracking irritant mode). After a two-year absence, lost in his addictions, Vince is forced to flee his life on the margins in Reno, returning to New York and to the Black Rabbit, which he and Jake built together. Vince may love his hometown, but New York still has it in for him. There are unpaid debts, an estranged daughter and other grim events from a murky past.
It is fun to see Bateman playing against the nice-guy type that has often defined his career. Though it explores an urban underworld, rather than a rural one, Black Rabbit shares a misanthropic spirit with Ozark (and directors, in the form of Bateman himself and his former Ozark co-star, Laura Linney). In that series, Bateman’s character at least pretended to be decent before an inevitable descent into villainy. Here he is, needy, petulant and self-involved, pulling everyone around him into his spiral of destruction. Law’s Jake, meanwhile, is growing tired of the demands of being a celebrity restaurateur and professional party boy. With the expansion, he aims to go legit and spend more time with his son, enjoying the spoils of what he has worked so hard to build. But he is soon drawn back into Vince’s chaos.
Black Rabbit has a flair for noir and sleaze. Its nightlife scenes have a timeless quality; at first, it is hard to tell whether they're set in the present day at all. But elsewhere, it is more of its era. The brothers were once in a successful indie band, which means viewers get to see Bateman on drums and Law in a blond wig, pretending to be rock stars. For all of the splashy drug-centred capers, gambling upsets and gunfights, there is an underlying melancholy, a sense of maudlin reflection from the vantage point of middle age on squandered potential.
It is impossible to deny its ability to ratchet up the stress, but in order for those screw-turns to be truly effective, the viewer has to have some desire to root for the rogues. Black Rabbit doesn’t quite make enough of a case for the Friedkin
Starting to watch this TV show - Bodies. On Netflix and has the now, very famous, Stephen Graham in it.

Two of my fave actors.
Jason Bateman was fantastic in Ozark and Jude Law has done many good turns.
Good also to see Lauren Linney back on the screen with Bateman.

27: Gone Too Soon
2018
Documentary / Music

Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971. At the time, the coincidence gave rise to some comment, but it was not until the death of Kurt Cobain, about two and a half decades later, that the idea of a "27 Club" began to catch on in public perception, reignited with the death of Amy Winehouse in 2011. Through interviews with people who knew them, such as music stars, critics, medical experts and unseen footage, the lives, music, and artistry of those who died at 27 are investigated with a bid to find answers.
Brain Jones!!! The true leader of The Rolling Stones!
The most talented of the Stones and cutest one .
Hard to explain just how cool he was in the day. His sense of fashion and the way he spoke and carried himself.
Too bad the pressure got to him and the drugs.
Very rude that neither Mick or Keith attended his funeral. I am in the club of conspiracy members who think Mick and Keith had their hands in his demise.
They surely did benefit from it more then anyone else. If anything, they turned their backs on him and watched him jump off the cliff.

It's strange how the mighty fall. We've also got Jim Morrison of The Doors as you said. I always thought of The Doors as one hit wonders - Riders on the Storm the classic of course but a couple of others.
Brian Jones was not really of my era. Same for Joplin.
But as a rock fan, one should especially mention Jimi Hendrix.
Out of all of them, Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix were - in my mind - the best out of the bunch of supreme talent.
Freddie Mercury doesn't count as he was 45 when he passed. I had reason to look at him in some old videos and really, he was unsurpassed in his craft. AIDS took a lot of people.

He founded the group, yes. However, it was Mick and Keith who made it into the band as it gained success. Brian's constant drug taking and alcohol abuse made him unreliable for recording sets in the studio. He died a month later after leaving the bank by drowning, but had lots of alcohol and drugs in his system.

I know they say he was drugged up and drunk when he drown but I have watched a few autopsy shows about his condition at the time of his drowning; Very low levels of both in his system.
I believe it when the builder ,Frank Thorogood who was in the pool with Brain confessed on his death bed that he drown Brain while rough housing in the pool and holding him under. Perhaps he was encouraged to do that or it was his own mad idea.
I know the building crew at Brian,s home was angry that day because they all had been given the sack for doing shoddy work. Brain was known to be a great swimmer.
It is a mystery for sure.
Rumor was he was about to start a so called super group with Hendrix and a couple others.
The handler, driver, fixer for the Stones Tom Keylock, arrived before the police did and burnt allot of Brian,s things.
If the others were not involved and he was fired, why was Tom called out before the police were?
They say Frank was shaking like a leaf when he left Brain at the bottom of the pool, he did nothing to try and save him; It was the girlfriend and the visiting nurse who got him out of the pool. Frank could only shake and smoke a cig.
Just does not add up to me.
Not sure these films are still offered or not on Netflix.
Perhaps all is not true but it is a good watch.
One is 8 Miles High, sort of Stone related.
The other is called/ Stoned. It was panned by reviews but a good watch non the less.

I've seen that guy playing heavies, evil sci-fi characters and as a drug dealer.
I am not sure I believe him as a rodeo rider.
The premise is he needs $750K to pay for his grandson's medical treatment.
If he'd been somewhere like the UK or Canada with socialised medicine, this couldn't even be part of the plot!

Oh sure, it's part of the story. I think another actor might have worked just as well. I'm not very keen on that bloke.
And of course the subject matter and theme has been covered many times in one form or another. Breaking Bad being one that comes to mind - not a story if there was socialised medicine. Even Lord of the Rings is actually similar.
These themes are very American in this form (and in other stories) - broken or flawed person faces adversity, goes through trials of some description but it all comes good at the end and everyone walks into the uplifting sunset to a better future. It's not going to end badly.
BTW, I like period productions too! But I've never seen Downton Abbey! I missed that one.
Who does not like a well made period piece.
I give it up to the Brits and the Turks as far as making great period pieces, customs and background are always top notch.
Loved Downtown Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs.
A Rodeo flick is very American but it is a real lifestyle even to this day.
I worked two years in a row at The Gold Coast Casino where the owner was a huge Rodeo fan;
Our casino was a western based one; The lobby had all the saddles in cases from years of winning riders, belts the whole deal.
Our uniforms blew my mind, no sleek black pants, we wore black Wrangler jeans and a cowboy/girl shirt. We were allowed to wear black cowboy boots, no thanks not made for standing.
Had an old rodeo clown on my blackjack table, it was a full house every day at all hours during the National Rodeo Finals which are held each year in Las Vegas.
This clown started to show everyone the surgery scares he had, said at one time or the other he had broken every bone in his body. Exaggeration but I saw enough to know he was not playing.
Wild bunch of people, some looked like they had just gone through a time machine with western wear from 1840 to 1860. The women too, beautifully thought out clothing.
Some rider came to play in the night shift, the big shots of the rodeo, they all stayed at our casino.
He was tossing $1,000 tips at all the cocktails servers.
The guys in the day shift were a bit more under control, if you can call getting up on your stool waving your hat and screaming winner, winner lobster dinner to anyone within ear shot.
Funniest thing, I was trying to be a cool dealer, not breaking the mold and getting buddy buddy with any player when a young cowboy and his friends came to my table.
We wore name tags with the location of where we came from; I decided to put Hawaii on my tag, thinking no one would ask questions about where did you go to school, etc;
No instead that young guy said you are my little Hula gal; Dance me a Hula! I stayed cool and just said, you should not be so fresh, I am old enough to be your mother; He broke the ice and had me laughing when he said, Yes, but we ain,t related, Darlin.
Those cowboys are mad, most are pretty well off too. They work their own ranches and just compete as a side thing; Most of them anyways.
Another funny thing was 75 percent of them asked me to keep track of their card counts because they had a hard time adding up to 21. Head injuries or just being lazy,IDK.
Lazarus, released Oct 22 2025.
Lazarus follows a man who returns home after his father's suicide and begins to have disturbing experiences that can't be explained. He quickly becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father's death and his sister's murder 25 years ago.
On Prime but will also be eminently suckable from other places. It's Harlan Coben. I am not convinced by him as a writer but I'll give it a go. Also not sure about Bill Nighy or not - is he a. good actor to fawn over or just phoning it in? He was OK in Sean of the Dead but he had to be zombie in that so that's hardly challenging. I could do that! And so could my neighbours - without makeup or costumes!

One Battle After Another - solid cast but billed oddly as a dark comedy (and action thriller).
It's in cinemas but it won't be long before it's on a streaming platform or elsewhere

I would think head injuries, gambling, alcohol, too much money and LV rodeos would be a disastrous combination. If people came from some backwoods, the opposite of "we ain't related" might have not been an obstacle! OK, silly joke.
I always thought cowboy boots would be dreadfully uncomfortable - very stiff and those pointy toes and clunking heels. I'd have thought flat shoes or trainers would have been the best if standing all day.
I usually wear walking shoes - like chunky trainers. But that's for slumming around, walking the dog etc. I rarely do anything else but slum around anyway these days.
Theoretically, I have to wear "the uniform" in the workplace but that's completely slipped over the years. I now never wear suits, never have a tie and tend to dress in black. I'd never take a job where it was required to wear a suit and tie.
In fact, I'm now pretty much wearing Hawaiian shirts permanently now as that was always the "formal" wear out in the Pacific. I had not gravitated to shorts yet but I really began to think I could do that as some of the locals wore those and I doubt they'd have blinked in surprise. If it's that hot and humid, why not wear shorts?
I couldn't do that here as it's Islamic. They all wear the dish-dash Arabic wear. If I wore it, it'd look like I was taking the mickey and wearing a dress. I do have some African clothing but I just cannot pull it off. I look ridiculous. The locals wear it and they look pretty good in it. There's a long standing/unwritten protocol in Africa. As a white person do not to wear local dress. I have seen white guys doing that, especially on Friday (their religious day) and it looks like the white wearer are making a joke of it. It could be seen as an insult or parody. Best not to take the chance!

I really liked Sidney Poitier. I didn't like his country much - The Bahamas. But I did walk over the bridge connecting Nassau to Treasure Island - it's the Sidney Poitier bridge. Nassau is like LV - absolutely fake.
