Hi, I'm American, living in Les Herbiers (85500) with my French husband.  I'm 44 with no children and my husband has two children whom we have every other weekend.  We moved to this department from department 85 and have found that it's not easy to meet people here.  Even the native Vendéens say the same!  Sheesh.  Since I don't have children I don't have the opportunity to meet other women through shared parenting activities.

I work as an English teacher.  I speak French but not fluently, and my husband speaks English really well.  He gets along with everyone.  We're both craving a little bit of a social life.  So I decided to post on here to see if there are any other women around here who'd like to get together for some low-key (ha) socializing.  For example, going to the nice lake in Pouzages when the weather's nice - picnic, chatting, being lazy... trying out new recipes at my house or yours...getting outdoors when the weather is nice, etc etc etc.  P.S.  I have a hilarious Scottish coworker who is 26, with a French boyfriend about the same age, and she is in the same boat as me, wanting to meet some people and expand her activities.  So we possibly already have a small group to build on.

I mentioned my charming husband because if you have a cool husband or boyfriend who'd also like to make some new friends, why not invite them?  And if not, let's make it a girls-only thing.

Fantastic French abilities not necessary since we all speak English well enough.

Is anyone out there?  :)

Hey Christa

Welcome to Expat.com :)

I have family in France, sadly they are on the other side and a 5 hour drive is just a tad far to drive for a cup of coffee. :(

Have you thought about putting up a notice in the town hall or cafe/bar to advertise a regular get together? It might work....  :unsure

You are welcome to create an Event HERE it has worked in the past.

I wish you well and good luck in finding some new friends. :top:

Hi SimCityAT,

thanks so much for your quick reply.  I'm not too sure about posting an announcement in town at the moment but it's a good idea to keep in mind if I get desperate.  We're in a little bit of a dead zone for cafés and bars here.

I'll check out the link you posted.

Have a great day  :)

Hi all!

I live in Nantes, and I discovered a cool group that does sometimes activities (specially in Nantes but maybe you can find another english speakers who live around your area too).

This group is called Knowing Nantes, and it,s quite interesting. It may be worth for you to join and post events or go to those organized by the people in the forum.
I forgot to mention, Knowing Nantes is in facebook, this is the link

https://www.facebook.com/groups/KnowingNantes/

There,s also an internet link that may be useful for you called Meetup, where you can find groups of interest within the area of Nantes.

I hope this is useful for you.
Good luck!

Bonjour Crista

It seems that we have similar interests. I was worried that finding friends would be challenging. I am excited to read your post.

We are planning a trip in late January/early February  to visit Cholet for the first time. Perhaps we could meet for coffee or dinner. We don’t have exact dates for another week. Let me know if you are interested.

Ciao

Thank you for the recommendation. I requested permission to join the Facebook group today. We are moving to Cholet in May 2019. Your suggestion sounds like something that we would like to get involved in. Thank you!

Hi I am sending this on behalf of my mum and dad who live near La Gaubretiere.

They are Irish and moved here from England a few years ago.

Is there an expat community in this area?

Christa, are you still living in this area? My Loveman & I are planning to move to the area surrounding Nantes in 2022 and I’ve been curious if it is difficult to find English speakers or befriend the French there. Have you found it any easier since your last post?

We love to have Halloween & Decemberween parties (if the pandemic permits) and I could always use the help in creating crappy crafts! If you are still around in that area when we move, you should make monsters with us.  :D
