Absolutely Anything Else

That reminds me, the family should have has booster shots against tetanus last year. That's a job for after the holiday.Mass tariffs are, in my humble opinion, an admission that you're crap capitalists.Trump's way to revive US car industry is to force import prices up. Indonesia does the same, but Indonesia has a viable, competitively priced local car manufacturing base - the US does not.The difference is easy for a teenager to work out.The Indonesian version makes foreign imports more expensive, but doesn't force up inflation as our local prices are reasonable. Manufacturing comes to Indonesia as we have an easy to find/train, cheap workforce, and the government goes mad to bring foreign manufacturers in with incentives that make operating here economically sound.Result. Balance of payments charts look good, lots have people get work, and businesses do well. Everybody is happy. The US car industry is plagued with high costs and limited choices.Americans will end up paying more as they don't have local alternatives. The solution is just as easy to work out, but impossible to enact. The US car industry must become competitive. Their family finances are ttheir problem, but it hits me indirectly. Much of my cash goes into investment accounts, alway low risk traded off with lower profits, but investment nonetheless. Trump is messing up the markets, thus my risk is increasing beyond an acceptable level. The banks reopen in a few days. My day to day banking won't change at all as BCA is an excellent institution, but the bank I use for retirement money is about to lose a priority card customer. Mr. Trump's idiocy is forcing me to change to a slightly less profitable, but far safer way of increasing my dotage fund. This still has profits many times higher than inflation, but it's essentially zero risk as it's government insured.I get less actual cash, but a lot more safety. This wouldn't have been a thing if that orange moron wasn't in the white house. Thank you, stupid American voters. - @Fred

Hyundai I think (or one of those) said it'd build a giant factory, mainly in response to the tariff situation.  So they made a move.  On the other hand, Tesla protests are getting bigger.  Yet Musk is "dumbfounded" that people don't like him or his cars  He's underestimating people's anger everywhere.  It's not just don't like, it's positively hate him it seems.   If you mess with people's lives, income and  now healthcare and so on, yup, that's going to get up people's noses.   Quelle surprise!

To me it seems that tariffs are an ineffective tax paid for by the US taxpayer to the government. It will only result in higher inflation and probably a recession.   People will not buy anything in a crunch wherever it comes from.  He could offset by lowering income tax.  That was tabled a while back.

Trump says there's no tariff on local production  but there always will be imports somewhere in the now super complex and seemingly delicate supply chain.  He's already had to back pedal on Mexico and Canada because they're in a treaty which Trump himself negotiated.  And if he tariffs cars from Europe, the EU will hit imports in the states where his fellow Republicans hold power (yes, do it).  Already we hear about Harley Davison motorbikes and Bourbon being hit with tariffs.  But who cares about those things anyway?

One thing made me query his understanding. He thinks VAT is a tariff and shouldn't be levied on US goods.  The US has a similar tax - Sales Tax - but it's levied unevenly across the individual states.  And many countries have them as GST - Goods Sales Tax.  Moreover, in the USA, if you bought something in one state, use in another, you supposedly have to pay what is called a Use Tax.  However, no-one pays it unless they have to and there's no chasing for the money.   And of course, tax matters are internal business governed internationally by treaty.  It's not considered trade.

I have quite a few US branded goods here but when you read where they were made, they are made in Viet Nam, China etc despite the label.  In other words, US tariffs? So what?  We're not paying them here.  The goods come directly to Europe and don't go via the USA.

CNN reported tourism is well down.  People cancelling all the time.  Airlines will be hit hard.  Unsurprising.

Oh and yes, definitely get everyone vaccinated. It's not worth taking the risk.

I don't hate Musk - I think he's a dangerous fool, but I don't hate him.

The same goes for Trump, but I would classify him as an extremely dangerous, corrupt fool.

This is an expat forum so policies that impact expats in the US matter, as do problems he causes for expats in the rest of the world.

If he messes up the people who voted for him, that's a strictly internal issue for the fools who gave him the job.

Well, I think people are becoming very polarised.   Musk is clearly a few sandwiches short of  a picnic.  What did he think would happen if he swooped in and messed up people's lives?

People think he's a genius. I reckon he just got lucky.   But it's marginally interesting how the shine has come off these people so fast.  From golden tech bro to almost the embodiment of evil in a few short months.

People say that he's got autism and that explains his behaviour but I think that's just an excuse or even a myth.  Fundamentally he's advancing a right wing agenda he's had in his mind for probably 10+ years and he's found the means to do it through controlling Trump via his wealth.  Hard to say what will satisfy him in the end.  He'll die like the rest of us.

I do wish he'd apply his "genius" to solving something far more worthwhile like a cure for cancer or solving world poverty or fusion power.

I read the other day his plan for colonising Mars is considered by most scientists as not being feasible.  Anyone going there will die of cancer and liver failure.  People born there will have genetic defects.  Better off pouring money into saving this planet than going somewhere else.

BTW, I was in a Tesla taxi. First time in a Tesla for me.  It was OK but nothing special.  Seemed a bit dated.  The driver said it's a great car for a taxi and cheap to run (overnight charge, $4).   But it cost him about $80K second hand, 3 years old.   That's an awfully expensive car for a taxi.  Chinese BYD have nice looking cars and they are half the price and technologically more functional.  It's now a competitive market and Musk is probably going to have to choose, government stooge or Tesla. I suspect he'll get ousted by shareholders and he'll no longer have the choice.

Don't forget to put your clocks forward!

Fair chance he's unpopular with their sales people.

As for BYD, Chinese cars are really big here. The Indonesian government did as I said above, so the Chinese manufacturers are happy, and we get surprisingly nice cars.

However, EVs are still not for me, and won't be until companies bring out a better range of cars.

I expect he is unpopular and not unexpectedly so.   If he thought he'd get away with it without consequences, he clearly doesn't know anything about government and public opinion.

At the moment, he's trying to buy a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat through massive spend on his Republican candidate.   If his spend fails and it's a non-win for the GOP, then he'll have learnt a lesson.  The people have voted and they weren't outside his house with flaming torches and pitchforks.  Not yet anyway.

There are 227 Tesla sales offices in the USA and all of them were picketed  on Tesla Takedown day last week.  Some other countries had similar events.

I would buy an EV if the price was right, the batteries were guaranteed for 25+ years, I had solar panels and I had the money.

The high speed charging technology BYD have is really significant.    It's all short journeys here so an electric car makes sense with the free fuel (from the panels).  Maintenance must be close to zero.

Great results have been done with PD 1 inhibitors for colorectal cancer. Stages 2 and 3 have been totally eliminated in medical trails of 16 cases.

I find that exciting news, my brother passed from stage 4 colon cancer just over 2 years ago.

This was a 100% cure rate since only those 16 people were in the study.

All the money, hopes and prayers for a cure, maybe we will finally see this illness defeated in the next decade or so for all stages of all types of cancers.

Or they can just stop poisoning everyone!

I have no plans of ever buying a EV car, who needs to be sitting on top of a battery? I doubt it is healthy for humans or any living thing.

Changed out clocks back but still over slept this morning, waste of a day!

My deportee friend is being housed in a shelter setting for now, all her documents except her passport were misplaced. She has to replace everything, could take upwards of a month to get them.

Very depressing for her, I am sure.

Being on hold for a month is not fun.

So much for the US gov. coming to anyone,s rescue.

Had a difficult time last night getting solid sleep. Kept dreaming of those souls in Asia. What a mess they are going through.RIP.

My husband has been talking about a couple months vacation in Thailand for ages; Now I hope he just keeps it at talk. I have no plans on going there at all now.

The earthquake in Burma aka Myanmar looks bad.  Then again, apart from being crass, the government there is totally corrupt, run by generals and could have been prepared under the normal circumstances of a modern and vibrant democracy.  Instead, they are bombing the rebels and rescuers.   Things must be very bad for them to ask for outside help.  Maybe - being cynical - this is the way they see an angle to get back in with the international community after years of isolation.  The military there is insidious, it's everywhere.

Strangely enough, I've been in Naypyitaw (their capital) and other places like Yangon numerous times.  It's a really strange place.  It's like I said before, wherever I've been, sooner or later there's some kind of catastrophe.   Disaster follows me and others around.

Good to hear there's progress on the colorectal cancer.  I am wondering if they'll find the cause is something really simple like a food ingredient or exposure to an common chemical.  I read somewhere that one potential cause of these nerve diseases like multiple sclerosis is an extreme kind of (allergic?) reaction to simple virus infections.

It could be like that stomach ulcer thing where they found it was a bacterial infection that caused it - a dose of antibiotics and people were cured.  My maternal grandfather died of a haemorrhaging stomach ulcer and they operated after he collapsed. Never recovered.   This was way back in the 1980s.  They'd have probably cured him nowadays but he was pretty old and wonky anyway so at best a couple of years but not much quality of life.

I've always thought we - humans - are a work in progress.   If we were cars, we'd probably not have been designed this way.  Of course, nature knows best I suppose but I reckon we should have two hearts and two livers so we've got spares.   Spare brain probably not a good idea.   I did read an entertaining book called Gulp! where the author asserted that the entire human being and its capabilities is really just way to move around the "tube" of mouth to stomach to rear end for the purpose of reproduction.  The "intelligence" of the human is just to get an advantage for that.

It must be the same for other animals.  I've just asked the dog if she was just a mobile digestion tube for the purposes of reproduction.  She didn't have any particular opinion and continued snoozing. Weightier matters on her mind no doubt.

I guess the Swedish deportee's new life is going to go forward now in the USA.  I cannot see her going back to Sweden now.  Probably just one of many deportee lives playing out everywhere in the world.  She'll just have to get a job to pay her way.   Healthcare will be a minefield if she's got conditions.  President Musk is going to decimate Medicare/Medicaid or whatever it is called.

I see many countries are now requiring travelers to get a visa to enter.

Husband said the UK is going to ask for visa,s even for those in airport transfer!

Sorry, that is a bit much if true.

I wish we had direct flights to the US from Budapest, they may be coming sooner or later.

My husband and son had a direct chartered flight once from LAX to BUD.

Easy, no transfers and only 10 hours on Malev.

This was years ago when it seemed only Hungarians were interested in visiting Hungary. You would think now the market is more then ready for direct flights from the states to HU. Enough tourists to fill several planes each day.

I think you can even outdo my cousin as far as visiting the most countries. He told me the number but I have forgotten.Well over 100 for sure.

IDK how he and his wife do it, they took 2 overseas trips last year alone, long haul ones. Probably went first class but IDK.

He can afford it but he is not a show off type. They rode the subway in Budapest with us and even walked for miles; Were happy enough to try local restaurants and not go 5 star.

Not like my old yoga teacher who visited with her husband and another couple 14 or so years back.

Man, all they did was brag about where they went to dinner and how much it cost. Funny thing was my connection was anorexic! Total waste!

I think they most we spent on a dinner, well actually a lunch was in Paris in 1986.

My husband , son and i wanted a real meal, no street food.

It was a Sunday and sort of quiet at lunch time.

All the menus were written in French and we were not about to order if we did not know what it was;

Found a Hungarian Jewish Kosher Place. Husband ordered in Hungarian and the food was great; Just under $200. for 3 without alcohol or desert.

The next day, it probably was back to bread and cheese!

I know the feeling. I sometimes look at humanity and wonder WTH is going on? Most people I find just average looking and not many stunners out there, no matter their age. Human design is odd too. At least dogs and horses are beautiful to look at and are more real then most people are.Birds, the most beautiful creatures of all. People tend to think too much of themselves or a few do not know how wonderful they are or could be if they only let their ego go.

Maybe Tarzan was lucky, raised by apes.

No, you don't need - as an American - a visa for UK transit.   If you enter the UK you need an Electronic Travel Authorisation but it's not a visa.   No big deal, apply online.  I think it costs money.  It's just a scam really.  They already know who you are from your passport details which they collect in advance.  It's a bit of a fad.  Everyone is inventing these things but it's all theatre.  UK is a big island, any determined person can just sail a boat straight on to the beach, drop off loads of passengers and leave again.  Stops no-one. System defeated!

Budapest is a popular with Europeans.  It's a short flight.  There must be at least 50 flights a day from European capitals to here.   UK people come here for cheap drink.  Usually stag and hen parties.   I don't think many people really wants to go further West from here now, usually they are going East to Dubai or Doha and on to Thailand etc.   Tourism must be way down because of US politics.  I could see flights to Canada going up maybe but only in the summer.  Air Canada used to fly direct to Toronto but I think it's all stopped now for some years.

I tried to go to Greenland once but it was really difficult.  But now they have a new airport, it could be worth trying again.  Iceland is quite popular.  Three of my relatives have been there in the past year on separate trips.  I did look at taking my car on the ferry to the Faroes, then to Iceland just for adventure.  But it was a bit crazy expensive to do and would have taken days.   Not impossible.

I'm watching a TV show on Netflix called The Residence about a murder in the White House.  It's a comedy.  It has it's moments.  The characters are not Hollywood types exactly.  More unusual looking.  There a bit of a romance going on between two characters who you wouldn't think would make a couple. Seems implausible!  But maybe it works for them and it is TV Land and anything goes there.

I think it's a dog day afternoon now, Ms Furry Fluffy needs her walk and I need some fresh air.  It's looking better outside but as usual, one never knows if it's hot or cold at this time of the year.

Marilyn Tassy

Nice outside with a slight breeze.

Just got in from the dentist.

Silly me, ate a nut and my crown popped off.

Easy fix.

I gave her a little something something as I still have almost all of me teeth and need to stay on the good side of any dentist.

I came home and looked online how much they charge in the states to re glue a crown.

So expensive, starts at $221.00, how they got that number IDK.

I do not think twice about dental costs here but dang, in the US I probably would eat mush just to avoid popping off a crown.

Maybe we will visit Greenland when it becomes the 51 state! Just kidding how crazy is it to try and take it over?

Canada, now that should be the 51!  Also kidding!

Yes, people do not realize what a big deal it is for Americans to fly all the way to Europe; You lose a day plus another day in recovery mode. Flying 2 or 3 hours is nothing, try an 18 hour flight with 2 transfers that are delayed.

Yes, my deportee friend is probably settling in and seeing what is reality in the US. I understand she was playing Russian roulette with her immigration status but I wish she had not married because that part is just sad.Her husband thought because he was a citizen, all was good. Could be but one needs the funds to support a spouse, living off the state was not a good idea if he wanted her to be welcomed.

Sad, really sad.

Sorry about your tooth.  But easy fix. I have a feeling my implants are going wonky.  One fell out a couple of years ago.  Bone loss.  Not too happy about that.   I'm looking out the window and despite the sun, there's a massive pile up of heavy black cloud somewhere over to the East.  We might even get a thunderstorm.  Luckily it was nice on my doggy walking.

We used to have Mark Carney (Canada's PM) as our governor of the Bank of England. He was considered a excellent choice in the UK.  He's a very highly educated technocrat and a hell of a lot smarter than the Teflon Don.

My own view is - as I've said before - for Canada to ally themselves more strongly with Greenland.  They have excellent experience in the frozen wastes and they created a new province/territory for the Inuit named Nunavut.  Very fair thinking to recognise indigenous peoples.

Greenland will undoubtedly (probably) be more inclined to Europe after Danish control for centuries.  People's thinking in Greenland must be more aligned  that way than the thinking of the latest version USA Trump 2.0.   There was some discussion on Canada joining the EU.  Cannot see that happening.  But it might be arguable Greenland is European (like Iceland) and maybe years hence becomes a province of Canada, then Canada could join the EU.   Bit of a stretch.

But, if Canada improves its position there, opens a base, builds some mines, it'd really really annoy Donny, which is probably icing on the cake.  It would give a nice big blip on my schadenfreude meter.

I just read that Canada is building a new radar system for early warning.  And they are doing it with Australia!  That's surprising and interesting.  I expect defence trade to reduce rapidly with the USA as self-sufficiency in Europe gears  up.   South Korea has some pretty good weaponry as well.  I think Poland uses Korean kit.

Yes, 2 to 4h from any EU country to Budapest.  Furthest you can go in the European EU (not the French overseas departments) is probably the Canary Islands or Azores.  Portugal is only about 3h away.  It's not that far.  But Dubai is not that far either.   I used to take a lot of long haul flights.  I wasn't paying so it was often Business Class or Premium Economy.  I used to drink a lot on the plane but I don't drink any more. Haven't done that for years. Coke Zero is far as I go.  I usually try and get some sleep!  Recovery depends on which direction one goes in.  I used to try and acclimatise to local time but now I just go with the flow.   If I feel tired I sleep, whenever it is.  I've found it doesn't take too long to naturally sync with the local time.

I think at least the Swedish deportee is OK for the time being.  She's in her home environment,  people and possibly family are helping her out.  She's luckier than most.  Imagine being dumped in some war zone or dictatorship (oh, wait a minute, should I include the half-baked Trumpland?).   Her husband should have been working to secure her permanent residence from the day she arrived.  If she could have got a job there, learnt Swedish, she'd have showed a high level of commitment that might have swayed the authorities decision.  Maybe there are things we don't know and the story is more complicated.

Marilyn Tassy

Yes, the deportee tale is a bit unusual.

Ex  Navy ,brat. Seems people raised with gov.perks tend to depend on the system to care for them.

I remember when my dog was in quarantine in Hawaii.

I would say over 85% of the animals had their fees covered by the US gov. because they were the pets of service people.

It was a real money maker for the state of Hawaii. 3,000 dogs and 2,000 cats in lock down for 4 months; This was in 1995. Cost was $850. for a dog, perhaps a bit less for a cat; Came with 2 meals a day, you could feed them yourself but I was afraid to chance it;If you happened to not visit for any reason, they would not feed your pet. They were closed for visits one day per week, God knows what was happening then!

You still had to drive the hour twice per day to feed your pet on that day, feed and leave pronto.

You also had to book morning times to bathe them in a bath area;

I had access to a hose and just gave him a bath in his run; Warm in Hawaii and the sun warmed up the hose water enough. It was worst then a jail visit, standing in line, showing ID etc. I am surprised they did not body search us!

They searched visitors in that Swedish detention center; They did not allow drugs or booze to be brought in, darn just when they would of come in handy!

They even had a guard watching you shower, to make sure you did not try to take the small razor apart and hurt yourself. I think that would cause PTSD.

My husband has to renew his driving papers soon; He is fine and will pass. Just a hassle to see the doctor.

My friend in Vegas wrote me saying her husband almost did them in once again! He just renewed his driving papers in NV too.

Second time within months that he drove down a one way st.!

There are not many one ways streets in Vegas either!

He had radiation on his head 4 years ago, probably giving him dementia.

I am sure he would not pass here in Hungary.

Poor things, she was looking at directions on her phone while he almost took a header; 2 cars honking at them and flashing lights!

I think they should sell their car and take Uber instead. Get food delivery or something safe.

I can not see Canada as part of the EU but they should not be forced into joining the US either.

Covid did not stop us from traveling so they have stepped up their game by making it political.

I assume the quarantine for dogs etc from the mainland would have been anti-rabies.  The UK has very strong anti-rabies quarantine.  We have our dog vaccinated - as we must - but the cat, I'm not sure.  It hardly goes anywhere.  It spends most of its time asleep on the sofa or under a radiator.   It's not allowed on the sofa but it's a sneak and we're fed up turfing it off.    I'm more of a dog person that cat person.  However the cat is now being incredibly friendly (by her standards) to me.   I think finally she trusts me.   Previously she'd scratch and bite.  Now she comes for attention and love.  Like a kind of difficult child.

Our neighbour has a dog that gets ignored a lot of the time.  We've started dropping by with chewy treats.  Now it knows the sound of our car and gets queued up for it.  It escapes a lot and it comes directly to our garden and hob nobs with our super friendly dog.    If the dog is missing, it's almost certainly with us. It's quite small and can get through the fence.  We don't care much but the owner is a little aggressive with it.   It's lack of training. It's not difficult to train dogs and it's not the dog's fault.  They all like food rewards. We were thinking of asking the neighbour to give us the dog as it seems there's a care problem there.  We're far too soft hearted.  I am sure our dog would like a friend.

I haven't been irradiated recently but actually I was feeling a bit off yesterday, even confused a bit and I actually scratched the rear wing of  the car on a wall.  It's not that bad, bit of polish and it'll go away.  I was extremely surprised as this doesn't happen to me.    The being "off" thing is probably related to my diabetes.  High blood glucose and medicines really change your behaviour and not always for the best.  Like being spaced out and not all there.   I was telling Mrs F that something is different but it's hard to tell people what changed.    My concentration is becoming less than good enough and simple but intricate things I am beginning to find harder.  I have no idea why but I suspect it's some other condition.  I've been checked and nothing is wrong that is obvious.     I was asked to look at a vacuum packing machine Mrs F got as a present.  I looked at it and I thought, I don't care about this.  I just hadn't got the patience to read the instructions.  I had to walk away from it.  Maybe it was just frustration - the instructions were rubbish.

High blood glucose makes you impatient.  I was working with a guy who was angry quite a lot of the time. I told him to get checked for diabetes and he found out he had it.  He didn't know. I said, you have to get it under control because you won't be able to function.  He disappeared for a bit but I got an e-mail from him telling me he was sorry for his anger in the office and had got his diabetes under control.   He thought it was a death sentence but it isn't, it's just a chance or necessity to change lifestyle.  It can be better.

My excuse for driving down one way streets incorrectly is that I'm literally only going one way.    Might be only me going that way but OK, we all make mistakes.

I've heard of people going loopy in immigration detention.  BTW, on a similar theme, I've just read a very dumb story from the USA over deportations. But I cannot remember which news service I originally read it on but here's a link to the same story. A El Salvadoran has been deported as a member of a criminal gang - might be MS-13.  However, there was a federal immigration judge order in existence for years that he was not to be deported for fear of death.  However, ICE deported him anyway to El Salvador CECOT prison and then said it couldn't get him back as he was no longer under US jurisdiction.  That's just bonkers.  A federal judge should surely order him to be immediately brought back for a hearing and Trumpites to lay out their case against him (despite previous orders that found in the deportee's favour).   And it will be the same for the others held in El Savador without due process.

This is what Trump wants though, a showdown with SCOTUS and a win that allows POTUS unlimited power to do whatever he wants.  I nearly choked on my coffee when I heard AG Pam Bondi saying Fed judges were interfering with Trump's agenda.  WTF?  Where did she go to law school?  Trump University? Anyone who knows the structure of US government, knows that's what the judiciary is there for along with Congress, i.e. to keep the President honest and reasonable.   I'm obviously not American but even I know how it works.  I wonder if the Trumpites were off school that day.

I really don't know what is going on.  But I keep thinking of an emerging banana republic.  Meanwhile, it'll blow up tomorrow around tariffs.  I'm not getting popcorn in for that even if  it'll be fun to watch.  There's going to more bananas  and nuts in that DJT fruit cake scenario.

Yes, Hawaii had quarantine for rabies. They no longer have quarantine; Silly them, I could understand being afraid to introducing rabies to the Islands in the past but with modern shots and proving all documents and going through a vet exam that it was just a money maker for the state.

I signed  a protest form against it and it finally is no longer in going on.

Helped save some per owners allot of misery.

I noticed allot of the women in Trumps cabinet are attractive blondes, guess he has a type? Not that attractive women can not do the job.

April 2 is suppose to be Trumps liberation day. The new Tea Party but this time against the entire world.

My husband noticed his driving papers are good till his next BD; One hassle gone for now!

Yes, old age or health issues make people nervous and jittery and impatient.

There is a reason the say, grumpy old man or women; Have to be aware of it and try to rest, eat right and exercise to combat the crazies in the mind.

Speaking of crazies, my poor older sister is struggling with the younger one. She would put anyone over the edge; Bought a second set of salt and pepper shakers for herself!!! The older one has everything plus then younger one is homeless, what is with salt shakers?

I would lose it within 5 mins living with her.

Thought her engine oil was low last week when she needed road side assistance. No, it was her water cap, had the wrong size on and the water was gone! Older sister  used her road side assistance with AAA to get it towed home so they could check it out better safely. Younger one opens her big mouth up and says it is her car, good thing the guy did not hear her because it is against policy to use the help for any non member of AAA. I mean you need half a brain if you have no funds, just too much trouble to try and help someone who can not be helped.  My older sister thinks this is her karma for never having children, now she is stuck with one big baby.

Actually now you say it, yes Trump likes his women to be blondes and thin.   I cannot say his taste is good as the actual people he's hired are pretty horrible speakers despite their apparent looks as a major hiring criteria.  That's the thing, he only needs them to spout his trash and look easy on his arm.   They don't have to be capable.  He's already been convicted of impropriety with the journalist E. Jean Carroll.  And he still owes her $81M even though he's appealing.  We'll have to wait for that outcome.   She also fits the blondie look.

I first heard of such a thing when the film director/actor John Derek left his wife Linda Evans for Bo Derek.  They were like clones but Bo was just a younger model.

Your younger sister could have helped herself to free some salt and pepper packets from a McDonalds or Burger King.

A new radiator cap is going to set her back maybe $10-15.  Much more important than salt and pepper.    If the engine has overheated, then it could have been damaged.  Best thing is to  get a new properly sized cap, put some water in (measure it to make sure it's the right amount) when it's cold and see if it leaks out when it's running.  If not,  add some corrosion additive or anti-freeze.

My water pump went once - just worn out - and I replaced it in the garden here at Fluffy Towers.  It was a pretty easy fix but I've got loads of tools for doing that.  I wouldn't want to do without the proper gear.

I was just playing a 1980s nostalgia mix playing on YT and the very odd thing (to me) is the Depeche Mode video was filmed on top of the WTC in NYC.  The twin towers!  That seems a little strange to see. Meanwhile, I saw Level 42 at the Cambridge Corn Exchange (in the UK) in the 1980s.  They were absolute nobodies.  We were there for someone else like Motorhead or Black Sabbath.  Not easy being the support band. I also looked at Two Tribes - one of the best tracks of the 1980s.  I want to see that video remade with Trump vs the Rest of the World.

BTW, we were at the MIL's place with an auctioneer.  He had a look around and some things he valued at much more than we expected.  But I went upstairs for the first time in years.  It's literally massive piles of absolute trash stuff.  I felt positively upset for Mrs F.  There's just no way to get rid of all that junk without professional people.  The "big furniture" will be almost impossible to clear without major manpower to get it out.  It's going to take at least a year to get it to empty rooms.  Everywhere you look, there's piles of stuff.  I reckon there must be at least 1000 books.  It's just eye watering.

Totally agree.  That was just weird.   If you look at the photos, one wonders what is really going on with those two.

I noticed in Trump 2.0, his daughter is nowhere to be seen.   Maybe she realised that being involved with Donny at a business level is likely to end in tears.

I don't how Melamine puts up with it.  Maybe she's waiting for him to peg it so that Barren inherits a chunk she can control.  I think there must be a pre-nup.   She's also nowhere to be seen.

It may have been a comment on the surveillance of protestors but not sure.  OP might say something about why this was posted.

There are an awful lot of cameras in Thailand.   There are a lot here too.   I sometimes use online cameras to check on the weather.  But here, mainly they are for traffic (supposedly) but who knows what they plan to do with them in the long term.

Since the anti-Pride law as passed last few weeks, one thing the government here has threatened is to use facial recognition to fine people for protesting against government policy.  No right to protest publicly is another step closer to the grave of HU democracy.

I can see a local run on balaclavas, face masks (obviously V for Vendetta versions) and bandanas.

I'm not going to protest as it could end with me being deported now Brexit took away our rights. But I'm hearing from the others who are all HU citizens, they are willing to risk it.

Looks like his millions didn't persuade the voters to go GOP for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the opposition Democrats didn't win in the special elections in Florida so the GOP has got slightly more control now in Congress.

Apparently Crawford (the winner) made it all about Musk, i.e. vote for the other guy Schimel (GOP), you're voting for Musk to continue his unelected slash and burn.

Critics are going to be complaining about Soros (again, broken record) as he gave funding to Crawford's campaign.

Soros is of course, Hungarian by origin.   He's often used as a target here for anything that's not Orban.  It's the same kind of nonsense that Trump spouts that Biden is to blame for everything.   When is that ever going to get old?

Just to be silly for a moment, Schimel is very much like Schlemiel, a Yiddish word meaning incompetent fool.   Makes you wonder.

What gets me is before the dim wit drove from Indiana to Minn; 7 months ago, she said she had her car checked in a garage to see if it was fit to go;Either she lied, very possible knowing her or they were lousy at their jobs, that is believable too.

My eldest sister will sort it out; I do not get it, my deceased sister had an almost genius IQ, the older sister is well above average and my brother and I  held our own, Hard to believe now, I lost it ages ago!

The younger one was at the end of the line as they say.

My fathers Hungarian /American wife, my step mom was from Indiana. They moved there in their  later years because she missed her kids and my dad was on the lamb, sort of, half sister issues... Like I said , she is a known liar.

Anyways, my father called my mom from Indiana.

He told her the people there had no humor, were so dull and boring that he knew it would kill him; He did not last long there for sure. Go Hoosiers!

I know when ever we drove cross the US we tried hard to drive right on through a few states without stopping.

Yes, not wise to take part in a protest now as a none citizen. Even then, who knows.

Music videos,Fun to look back at the early vids from MTV.

Heard Foghat this morning on the radio, saw them live in San Diego back around 73. I was 17 and my friends and I went to a day music fest there. I remember walking by the stage during Slow Ride, the singer,Lonesome Dave was checking me out and I was checking him out. Think we liked each others outfits. He had on his gold lame pants and I borrowed a gay friends grandfathers 1930s style tux with tails and top hat. We both were overdressed for San Diego.

It was a free concert too!

I know when we cleared out my MILs house we placed a few wardrobe cabinets outside the house for anyone to take;

Objects that were too heavy we gave away by my husband going over to a Gypsy family and asking them if they wanted the furniture; We watched them while they removed some old beds and other junk.

One wardrobe we decided to just burn in the large heater my FIL had put in. They had normal heating in the house and also a way to burn firewood or coals. We broke it into small pieces and burnt it; We noticed after it was chopped the there was a stamp on the back from a wood maker that was well known and expensive in Hungary; Think the stamp also had a date of 1908. We should of been more careful before doing it in.

I've been to Thailand many times. I wouldn't personally have any reason not to visit.  I've been everywhere in Bangkok. And a few countries in the neighbourhood.

It's often a beautiful place but some places (mainly Pattaya) are apparently turning into sewers of drunken and stoned tourists overstaying their visas, working illegally or scamming or murdering each other.

That's if you believe the Asean Now web site.

I went to the deep south. I recommend it to everyone. The place is unspoiled by western tourists.

I took a short break Phuket - What a dump. It's clean and has great beaches, but the prostitute infestation is bloody terrible. I left early.

I visited Bangkok- An interesting city I enjoyed.

However, I'm not big on Thai food so I can't see me bothering returning unless work demand it.

I haven't seen any fake news about mass earthquake deaths in Thailand, but it's the sort of things internet morons would do.

I agree. Best to get out the urban centres.  Personally I prefer Laos.  Small scale, decent food etc.

And Thailand just over the border.

Wasn't convinced about Cambodia as extremely corrupt.

I was amazed how cold it was in Hanoi, Viet Nam.

I wasn't there long enough to make any difference on my opinion about the place.

I've been all around there and Thailand is a proper place.

Indiana to Minnesota is not that far.  Maybe what, 250 miles between state capitols?  That's like a trip to Zagreb or something.   Easy ride unless you literally and metaphorically have a screw loose.  Oh well, your sister will sort it. She just has to.   Maybe younger sister is actually undiagnosed mentally ill?

BTW, I've never really known what the Hoosiers are and I'm not sure if it's an insult or not.  I know it's people from Indiana but does it mean country bumpkins or something like it?  Didn't really look into it that much and Wikipedia is not helpful.

Yes, the furniture is a problem.  It's just that massive stuff that weighs tonnes.  If it doesn't come apart, it'll never go down the stairs or out the front door.   We wouldn't burn the old stuff.  If someone wants to buy it, they have to bring transport and people to remove it.

Some of it is just rubbish, modern commie furniture with no redeemable design features.  Basically in the trash.   Those particular shelves are all sagging due to the weight of 1000s of books.

I've said it before that HU people often have large numbers of books, seem to collect them but have learnt very little or are generally naïve in some way.   Mrs F's parents were Hungarian and Russian language teachers and collected all these tomes.  I doubt they even knew what they had and they never threw anything away it seems.  They seem to have collected cupboards and shelves to put books in/on and they never actually used them. They aren't in any order or indexed in any way.  I think a lot of them will end up in the trash.  We might be able to get them gone for money but probably we'll end up donating them.  We'd have to determine which are worth money, like 1st Editions.

A Harry Potter 1st edition sold for £36,000 recently.  Apart from being a stupid kids story made up by a not very nice person, it's like an alternate universe assigning such a value.  I don't understand it.  If it was a genuine autographed copy of one of Shakespearean play, then maybe.  But Harry Potter, pfff....wtf?

I received this from the HU government this morning (via Google Translate).

Yes, I received it but I'm not a HU citizen.

Once again and as usual, it's loaded wording.

"A nationwide referendum will begin in Hungary in the coming days. The aim of the vote is for us, Hungarians, to decide together on the issue of Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

Brussels wants to admit Ukraine to the EU in an accelerated procedure. However, this could fundamentally affect the future of Hungary and directly affect every Hungarian, so they cannot decide over our heads. Ukrainian accession would cost every Hungarian family hundreds of thousands of forints a year and would entail serious financial and security risks. The government will provide detailed information on these issues to help you make your decision.

We ask you to take part in the vote after considering all aspects and to make a responsible decision.

The vote will be held by mail, and the post office will start delivering ballots in the coming weeks. Every adult Hungarian citizen has the right to participate in the vote and vote yes or no."

.sorry to disturb your dissertations and wild assumptions. Our response was targeting Ms Tassy wild hallucination about Thailand dead and destroyed... Which has changed her Hungarian husband intentions to visit. explore. Thailand.
The live cameras are facts of real time life also weather for the enjoyment of real time year around vacation facts!

The cameras are donated by real living people and have nothing to do with police or immigration or communist driven public and trafic interrogations. what the hell so now we back out of here once again to let your dissertations, wild imagination about any subjects commence. Live long and prosper. - @tamas0

Sorry Mr.T, I am just shooting the breeze on here but please remind me what exactly I said that was so insulting.

I must be suffering brain fade because I do not remember saying my husband did not want to go to Thailand, it was me if anyone at all.

One reason is the long flight and us being older seems like a hassle just to sit on a beach and eat some food that probably will upset my digestion.

I  have a relation from Thailand and know the people are friendly there.

Well, my first cousins long time wife is from Thailand.

I would not think visiting a country or any place right after a major event is  not a good idea; People should not of booked vacations to Maui either after the fires, resources are needed for the locals not tourists.

My Vegas friend said there is a nationwide protest this coming Saturday in the US.

Some anti Trump thing; She wants to go.

IDK, do not think it is safe for her to be there. Being in a wheelchair and in a crowd in my opinion is not safe.

That will be interesting to see how Hungarians vote about the Ukraine.

For sure the Ukraine is going to cost allot to rebuild.

Hoosiers, I was being sarcastic, my usual state of being. They are so into their teams in Indiana , even made movies about their team, basketball I think? Real basket cases about their team.

Makes me think of Muck , Musk wearing that cheese hat the other day in Wisconsin. WTH?? No wonder the world thinks the US is a joke.

Only 250 miles from Indiana to Minn.? Only took her 2 and a half days and a hotel room to get there.

We used to drive straight none stop from LA to NM. That is an 18 hour drive.Min.

Yes our little sis defo has some issues. Our mother mentioned it, spoiled her ,gave her different rules to live by but in the end it did more damage then good.I think she would of been much better off if her father had not died when she was young; Our mother was in her mid 50s and ill and just wanted peace at any cost.

She has always done psycho stuff. I am probably the only one to ever call her out and she is always going no contact with me when I tell her too much of reality. She wrote me today after a month of going silent.I made the mistake of telling her she should be working and not messing around. She did say she is looking for work, some old tune, been looking for work for the last 10 years! She should actually join a dating site and find some half wit who will go along with her issues. There has to be someone out there who likes to harm themselves. Terrible thing to say about a family member but we all reach our limits.

I am afraid she is doing the older sister in, stress and being close to 80 is no good. She has burnt all bridges with me. Well almost all, we all can be suckers at times.

My son wanted to invite her to Japan and set her up over there with some old Japanese man! Where on earth do these ideas come from?

Years ago over 30 years ago we did set her up. My mother told my husband she finally thought he was the best;Told him to please find someone like himself for my half sister because she was not all there and needed a keeper.

Well in time a HU guy we knew in FL; got a divorce. His wife of many years ran off with another HU guy!

These people are too much!

He had a great job, house, loved to support people and loved working himself to death. We suggested to him that my little sister was single; He sent her a plane ticket so they could meet up; She went to FL for a week and he treated her nicely, dinners out etc; Nothing physical between them, just a get to know you week, or so I know;

She returned to Ca; and hooked up with her late husband.

For some reason she was going to visit the HU guy in FL again and took his offer of a plane ticket to FL.

Out of the blue she calls me in Hawaii and says she exchanged that ticket for one to Hawaii and she was coming to stay with us! She had married her husband by then!! She never told him where the ticket came from!

I told her no way but she still landed in Hawaii.

A week from the pits of Hades!

She has no respect for others at all. I learned during that week that there is no way on earth I could live with her.

So hard to believe we had the same mother;

We've heard from Trump and his tariffs  and now we've heard from Orban about leaving the ICC (International Criminal Court).  Well, oh dear.

Out of all of that, it's the ICC which I was immediately more concerned about.  I'm sure the EU will have something to say about that as it's a human rights problem the European Courts will be thinking about next time HU is up before it.  I reckon the EU ought to be thinking of sanctions on Hungary.  I get the impression this is past the early days of a pressure cooker - everyone I know is sick of this OV nonsense.

However, I've been having a thought this morning that (unsurprisingly) Trump learnt nothing from history and the Smoot-Hawley Act in the 1930s, an economic disaster that pushed the US even further into recession/Depression.   The reason why I am thinking weird is I'm wondering if Trump will actually need to bomb or declare war on Iran to get out of it a recession.   There's nothing like a big fat war to increase production in the military-industrial complex.

After his tariffs, will he get any support from anyone around here?  Probably not in Europe anyway.  Not unless it's tied to Ukraine. Perhaps this is the longer gamble.  Lean on Europe for tariffs, start a military punch up with Iran, say support me and he'll remove tariffs.  I don't think there's any significance that he'd potentially be showing Putin - ally of Iran - who's on top?  He's Putin's bitch already.  In China, they must be really thinking of invading Taiwan and who could blame them.  He's mental to treat his allies badly and even worse, he's bonkers with his enemies.  He's gearing up for confrontation.

Moving on, I checked Google Maps for the distances.  Takes 4 hours to get from Indianapolis to Milwaukee.  I don't know where they are but it's an afternoon of driving and not even an overnight needed if one sets off early enough. Strange business to take days and hotels.

Perhaps it's a good idea to get her off loaded to some "sugar daddy" (or "Mummy") but that's probably not a cool thing to say but it's a quid pro quo.  She can take care of him (or her) and inherit his/her place.  Live in carer and he/she pays for it all.   It doesn't sound like she'd have the persistence or the ethics to actually commit to it.  Sorry to say it.

There's a system in France called called Viager.  Essentially the property owner signs over their property and the buyer pays a regular amount to the owner so that when the owner dies, the buyer gets the property.  It's really to free up the cash tied up in the property so the owner can enjoy it.  Of course, the bet is on the owner dying fairly quickly but obviously that's not guarantee - they could go on for a very long time.    But it could be your wayward sister pays $1 a month (maybe some cash has to be paid legally) and her care effort is effectively the payment to the owner netted off against living expenses and housekeeping etc.

It's such a nice day, I'm going to take the Fluffymeisterin walkies.  I don't think I'll even need a coat! It's like 17C and very sunny.

Milwauke is not in Minnesota but close, still 250 miles should not take longer then 4 or 5 hours, max 6 with road stops.

Yes, 2 and a half days plus an overnight in a hotel!

Crazy thing, when she came to Hilo her plane went to Honolulu where she was to catch a regional flight over to Hilo.

Out of the IDK, couple hundred people on board going to catch another flight out, she was the only one to miss the plane!!

I could not believe my hears when she called from Honolulu saying they were putting her up for th night in a hotel! Lucky me, one less day with her! I know, I am terrible but man she threw our house into chaos in just a few days.

I have no idea how she got the airlines to pay for her hotel room that night but they probably never saw such a space case before and did not know what to make of it!

My mother made me promise to always watch out for her when she was nearly on her death bed. I tried, I really did but she is too much for one person to deal with.

My husband also says she should remarry if she can find an idiot!

It is nice outside, going for a walk around today too.

Who knows what it going on. My opinion has been the same for years, they want to take down so called richer countries and make every country equal, rich class and dirty poor.

Get rid of the middle class.

Hope I am wrong;

Yes, you're right, Milwaukee is not in Minnesota but Wisconsin.  Milwaukee looks quite nice on the pictures.  Even so it's indeed 1 day driving if one leaves early.  Looks like Indianapolis to Minneapolis is 9h and about 600 miles.  Definitely easy to do.  Leave at 6am and be there by late afternoon even with a 2h lunch inclusive of a bit of a walkabout and a 1h snooze in the car!  Easy peasy on a decent road!  We used do those kinds of distances here.  We'd do it with two drivers - 2h on, 2h off.  We've even done longer distances non-stop with three drivers - 2h on, 4h off.  We'd only stop for fuel and pit stop.

Do you think your sis has autism? Chaotic kind of thinking it seems or maybe that's a stereotype.

My nephew had a brain injury during his birth.  He's as nice as pie and lives alone.  He's got a simple non-taxing job. He has a social worker who checks on him and he rents a flat.  He's not capable of safe driving or operating machinery.   What we noticed when he was very young is that he likes very repetitive tasks.  He could put boxes in another box and never, ever, get bored.  Or stack up cones non-stop.  Something extremely repetitive.  I guess what I'm getting to is that some people seem pretty OK superficially or physically but when you get into it, they have these behaviours.   Just have to find the one that keeps  them happy.

Maybe your sis needs daily adult supervision at a welfare specialist level.  Chaotic living seems like a mental illness or a medical condition.

Meanwhile:

The weather is excellent, over 18C here at Fluffy Towers.  Mrs F and I have been gardening. I've cut the grass, cleaned up and chopped up a small dead tree.     I saw on the forecast that frost is coming back.  It should be OK after April 15.  That's the day, snow chains are no longer required on some mountain roads in Austria.

And elsewhere:

BTW, I'm avoiding El Gordo Donny today.  It's Friday and there are better things to do.  I could not help hearing discussions on the radio. Looks like the stockmarket is tanking which is going to whack people's pensions over there.   We were laughing here over the tariffs on the uninhabited "Penguin Islands" getting whopping tariffs.  According to news reports, the Heard and McDonald Islands (part of Australia) have not physically been visited by anyone for over 10 years and are nature reserves.

Even stranger are tariffs being applied to the countries in a Compact of Free Association with the USA - i.e. Marshall Islands.   This makes no sense whatsoever as the USA uses territory there for military air bases and owes them big time for polluting the place with nuclear waste from bomb tests (i.e. the infamous Bikini Atoll).   Trump and Co clearly don't even know this stuff.  WTF?  Maybe it doesn't matter in TrumpTown, the tech bro oligarchs are going to get richer one way or another.
