COVID-19 cases have been on the rise for the past few weeks. More than 600 positive cases are registered daily. Also in the news, more traffic control during the festive period and the weather station announces a rainy weekend.

COVID-19: 600 cases per day since the beginning of the month

The authorities are recording 600 new cases of COVID-19 every day in public health centers, detected with the help of antigenic tests while 534 new cases were recorded between November and the beginning of December through PCR tests. A significant increase compared to October when 154 cases were recorded.

However, the Ministry of Health is not yet sounding the alarm because patients do not show serious symptoms. It should be noted that 40 people are currently admitted to the New ENT Hospital. Most of them are elderly and have comorbidities.

It is possible that the number of positive cases will continue to increase with the growing number of people visiting shopping malls, public transport and supermarkets in the run-up to the holiday season. Caution is therefore advised.

Festive period: increased police presence on our roads

As every year during the festive period, the police presence on our roads is increasing. Especially since road accidents have been numerous for several months. In fact, since the beginning of the year, 98 people have died on our roads. Speeding, alcohol and drug consumption are the major causes.

So, since the beginning of the month, there's an increasing number of police teams on the roads. The targeted areas are shopping centers, city entrances, as well as large villages. This special arrangement will be in place throughout the month of December until Sunday, January 8. A zero tolerance policy is applied during this month of December. Other measures will be announced soon by the Commissioner of Police, Anil Kumar Dip.

Weather : Overcast and rainy this weekend

Heavy rains are expected soon. As you may have noticed, since the beginning of this week, localized showers have been recorded in some parts of the island. According to the meteorological station of Vacoas, the weekend is expected to be rainy. Clouds associated with an area of instability will influence the weather in Mauritius and Rodrigues in the coming days. On the other hand, the tropical depression that was located about 900 km east-southeast of Agalega is decreasing in intensity. It is not a threat in Mauritius anymore.

With this drought, the heavy rains will be beneficial. The situation in the reservoirs is catastrophic with some having dropped to below 50%.
