The drought that has lasted for several months should have consequences on the availability and prices of fruits and vegetables. Also in the news, harbor employees to go on strike.

Summer fruits might be sparse

Litchis and mangoes are very much affected by the lack of water. It is therefore expected that these coveted fruits will be sold at high prices this summer. Water levels in reservoirs are falling and supply has been affected for several weeks. The continuing drought is also expected to cause a possible increase in the price of vegetables in the coming days. If it does not rain in the next few days, the price of products such as beans, squash and tomatoes , among others, are expected to rise significantly. Bitter Gourd plantations are also being affected.

It should also be noted that the arrival of summer rains will cause an inevitable increase in vegetable prices. This is the case every year. The big showers are expected from December.

Port employees to go on strike

Harbor employees in Port-Louis are planning to go on strike. Indeed, negotiations to find a new collective agreement have been unsuccessful between the management of the Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd (CHCL) and the unions. The employees have been waiting for concrete measures from the management of the organization for several months now.

A new meeting is expected to take place in the next few days between the unions and the management of CHCL. It is also expected that employees will meet to decide what to do if this meeting does not result in anything concrete again.

There has been no wage increase since January 2021. Port employees are demanding a wage increase of between 8% and 25%. The collective agreement, which expired in December 2020, has not been renewed so far because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
