
Our wallets are set to take another blow in the next few days as vegetable prices increase. Also in the news, about fifty brands of drugs are out of stock in private pharmacies.
Consumption: vegetable prices might increase
The drought that has persisted in the country for several months is not without consequence: vegetable prices should increase soon. Indeed, the island having experienced a relatively dry winter there have been many prolonged water cuts especially in the Northern part of the island which has greatly affected vegetable production. Add to this, the prices of fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides and seeds which have also spiked.
On the other hand, Moroil has announced there will be a drop in their prices from Monday, October 10. Thus, a bag of Rani oil will be sold at Rs 87; a 1L bottle of Rani oil will cost Rs 88. You will have to spend Rs 91.50 for a 1L bottle of Moroil Soya, while a 1L bottle of Moroil Sunflower will cost Rs 108.
Health: shortage of about 50 brands of drugs
Although Covid-19 is no longer a serious threat in Mauritius or internationally, it is still affecting import-export, especially that of medicinal drugs. Thus, about fifty brands of drugs are unable to be found on the local market in private pharmacies. The main drugs affected by this shortage are cough and sore throat medication. However, the country expects new shipments soon.

Weather: a second tropical depression in the neighborhood
The region is experiencing the effects of climate change. A second early tropical depression has formed in the Mascarene region. It is evolving about 1,600 km east-southeast of Diego Garcia. It should not be a threat for us, however, as the weather should remain sunny this weekend. It will even be hot in some parts of the island. The maximum temperature will vary between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius in the highlands and between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius in the coastal areas.
