The news of the week: the price of gasoline rises to Rs 67.40 per liter and diesel to Rs 49.60 and the price of household gas of 12 kg rises from Rs 180 to Rs 240 per liter. In other news: protest against a Smart City project in Black River.

Fuel prices increase

Another blow for consumers. In two days, they have seen the price of household gas and gasoline rise. On Monday 18 April, household gas went up to Rs 240 per 12 kg cylinder, an increase of Rs 60. The next day, gasoline was increased to Rs 67.40 per liter, an increase of 10%. Diesel also went up to Rs 49.60 per liter. This is the third time that the price of fuel has risen in three months. It seems that these new increases have been the last straw for consumers. Indeed, demonstrations took place in Camp Levieux on Wednesday. A so-called illegal demonstration that saw citizens take to the streets to express their anger. Others in Pointe aux Sables followed as well as in Plaine Magnien, Plaine Verte and other areas across the island.

Citizens oppose a Smart City project

A hotel and Smart City real estate project is in the world in Roches-Noire. The inhabitants as well as the activist group Aret Kokin Nu Laplaz (AKNL) are opposed to the project and intend to formally inform the Ministry of the Environment. Bernard Cayeux, member of AKNL and the platform "Protect the ecosystems of Roches-Noires" explains that this area must be protected since it is a swamp and is part of an ecosystem that will be destroyed if this site is altered. Roches Noire is also well known for its caves and ponds.
