The health pass is a controversial issue in several countries around the world right now. In Mauritius too, a lot of places are only accessible to vaccinated people. Two months ago, the government launched a digital version of the vaccination card. So, how do you get it when you're a new expat or visitor in Mauritius?
The digital pass is a technology that allows the vaccinated- although not if you're under 18- to go out easily without having to carry the vaccination booklet and has been available since October 15. However, until now the digital vaccination card has been reserved for those who have been vaccinated in Mauritius. For the time being, expats will just need to present their vaccination cards. Your vaccination card allows you to go anywhere you want on the island. The government is currently working on a digital version for expatriates and tourists.
What you can do if you're vaccinated
The digital pass is required in police stations, beauty salons, cinemas, theaters, concert halls, restaurants, pubs, casinos, tourist residences and even at the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service.
In addition, there are sports complexes, gymnasiums and other sports facilities. These locations also require the presentation of an ID card to ensure that the digital pass is yours.
What about public transport and supermarkets?
For the time being, the presentation of the vaccination card is not mandatory in public transport such as buses, subways or cabs. But one needs to respect sanitary measures in place. This is also the case for supermarkets where being vaccinated is not mandatory.
Getting the digital pass?
If you have been vaccinated in Mauritius, you just need to download the Besafe Moris application on Android or IOS. Then click on pass (third tab at the bottom of the app), enter your passport number and you're done. The digital pass shows whether you have been fully vaccinated or only one dose. The dates of vaccination are also mentioned as well as where you were vaccinated.
