A right time to make the move.....?

Hi there,
My name is Nick, I currently live in Bristol (UK) and work as a graphic design manager. My wife is Italian and we have a son of 16 months. We have been considering a move to Italy for a while, possibly to stay with family in Pomezia, nr Rome, for the short term.
I hope to continue as a graphic designer in Italy, possibly freelancing from England in advance of any move, but I will probably study for a CELTA course on arrival in Rome to provide some job opportunities.
As a family our main concern is whether it's a good time to start afresh in Italy.... we are aware of the general economic climate and difficulties, but I guess in terms of young children this is entirely an unknown for us!
