hello,
i am a student in milan and i have applied for the renewal of my permesso di soggiorno around 5 months back. The appointment for finger print scanning is scheduled on 15th of February 2018 and i need to travel to my home country on 17th of the same month. Since after 15th the 'renewal receipt' would also expire and i will not be having any document other than my passport, would i be allowed to come back from my country to milano again?
P.s it is an unavoidable travel and cannot be delayed till i receive my new permesso. (might take a month or more.)

if there's a certain procedure to be followed, please guide me.

thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forum :)

You really need to talk to the officials they will be the best people to give you advice. I would do first thing tomorrow.

ivankapoor

thanks for your reply,
i have tried reaching out to the questura di milano but apparently i need to have an appointment even to clarify this thought. The appointment issuing police station is apparently too busy for such matters. i have been there two times at their given time but still nothing has happened.

It's unfortunate, but as your PdS expired you would need a(nother) visa to re-enter Italy.
Talk to the immigration officials on the 15th when you are up for fingerprinting, maybe there is a solution...

It depends on your country of origin. If you are taking a direct flight or not. After finger print appointment in questura they suppose to give you back the post office receipt which you will hold. Even if your permesso expired you are able to travel.

It is necessary to carry, (apart from the passport or an equivalent identification document valid for international travel) the original of the expired PDS, for which the renewal application has been submitted.

It’s necessary while traveling to carry the receipt of the application for the renewal of the PDS. (The post office receipt "Ricevuta")

ivankapoor

thank you everyone. i will cross-check with the police once again in the morning.

Yes, on an outbound flight... ;)
Hopefully, ivankapoor will tell us how it went.

to anyone who's curious enough,
As long as one is attending the biometric appointment(finger-print thing) on the given date, he/she could travel to and fro the home country with mere passport and the postal receipt. I would still be carrying some more documents to litigate my case, if needed, confronting italian immigration.

Italian inbound immigration may not be the issue as they know this rule. Just pray that the outbound immigration officers in your home country is aware of this policy. They can create issues if they see the expired pdS and are not aware you are allowed to enter using the post receipt.

Hi Ivanka, I just found ur forum thread while I google for the issue which u faced here. I'm also facing the same issue. I gave my fingerprint verification on March 24 2022. It's been 2 and half months already since I didn't receive an SMS for the collection. I checked my permesso status online. and it showing ready for the past one month. I need to travel to India on August 15th cos I have my marriage on the 29th of Aug.I'm not sure I will receive my permesso before the travel. in that case, I really don't know what to do.

Can u help me in this situation by letting me know how u travelled before u collect the permesso after ur fingerprint verification?. If so how long I can stay in India and while I return to Italy is there any additional procedure I need to follow.?

Hi ..I think you can travel to India with finger print receipt....while coming from India to Italy ..my suggestion is to take Delhi airport because those people will knows the rules of (permisso di soggerno)

Here are the some rules you check it and while you coming from India to Italy you can take printout of these rules ..

Foreigners awaiting renewal of their residence permits can leave and re-enter Italy if they hold:

the receipt issued by Italian Post offices (Poste Italiane S.p.A) certifying the submission of the application for renewal of their residence permit or EC residence permit for long-term residents;
the expired residence permit;
their passport or other equivalent travel document .
