hey holy helga,

there are many nice beaches in italy. I like the beaches in Liguria. In Alassio, Diano Marina or Laigueglia.
They are very long and sometimes they are also free.

Sicily has the best, and most beautiful beaches, best food, wine, what more can you want, but if you want to party go to Rimini,

In Italy there are thousands of nice beaches it depends on your needs...in the North usually there are big cities (Milan, Venice, Florence,...) but the beaches are not nice..not as beautiful as the South.
If you are planning to have a tour it will be good to see both...if you are just looking for beaches I suggest you to visit the South...like Calabria or Puglia regions (the "heel" and "tip" of the booth).
If you have time Sardegna and Sicily (the two big islands of Italy) have gorgeous beaches and beautiful sea.
Mainly the beaches are sand beaches but sometimes there are stones ones (especially in the North-West..like Liguria)
Hope it will help, have a nice trip
