Today's Weather

SimCityAT

So nice, I was on a roll I actually got round to mending the satellite cable that I managed to cut in half last year, just have to wait until Tuesday for the bin to be collected then I can fill it up again.

Cynic

Oh, that Darwen; we're not allowed to know about that (it's over the hill) and there'll be talk about which rose won what. We live not far from Towton which was (is) one of the battlefields from the War of the Roses, some of the old local families still mutter about that lot over the hill; we're tolerated because we're foreign. - @Cynic
The excitement on the Red Rose side was if Reform (now running Lancs County Council) would allow the local flag to fly.
If they didn't allow it no-one will know who is who when it comes to skirmishes around the border.

I'm caught between two stools - relatives on both sides. - @fluffy2560

Oh - so Lancs council flies the red rose flag?  Yorkshire being split into 4 regional councils, it's a bit confusing, so we just put our Nederlandse Vlag met wimpel up.

LCC is just the one council so it's still all Red Rose land.

My Yorkshire relatives would have kittens if she knew the White Rose country was being broken up.

We are supposed to put up Hungarian flags on the national day.  Lots of people do but we don't have one.

I am not sure how it'd go down if I put up the St George's Cross on the appropriate day or even if I flew the Union flag.  I don't know the etiquette.

I suppose I'd have to fly both flags at the same time.  One for the host nation and one for the day in question.

Maybe people get confused over the Irish, Italian and Hungarian flags.   It's a bit like Belgium and Germany.  Bit of disorientation could lead to an international incident. Goulash, Spaghetti and Guinness raised and ready for action. Chocolates vs curry wurst at dawn.

14°C today, no rain but a bit cloudy. Having a day off from the garden today, I will go out tomorrow. I'm lucky because we live in one of a few towns in the area where we are allowed to make a noise on a Sunday in the garden. They say it will be 17°C tomorrow, so that will do just fine, just right.

It's not very warm but it's somewhat sunny.  It's warmer in the North of England.   I'm a bit surprised as the UK is usually crap compared to here.   We've got 14C as well.  It's rising a bit.

We'll be off to the MIL's for gardening and furniture moving.

I've been looking at the diurnal temperatures (highs and lows during a day) and it's not particularly extreme here.  Other places have huge changes - like +50C down to -10C.   That like being on Mars (not really).   It seems the highest point on temperatures is 16h.  I noticed this just looking at the weather observations.  Clearly this is the time to do stuff outside.

It's too windy for spray painting at Fluffy Towers.  Gusts up to 2 m/s from SSE.

SimCityAT

@fluffy2560

You don't want it to be to hot if you are moving stuff around anyway, dry, warm enough with a pleasant breeze. Blizz

Yes indeed.

But it's not that warm inside the MIL's house. No heating for months and not a lot of sun - scattered clouds somewhat.  It's one of those cool in winter and only slightly warmer in winter kind of  houses. It's really falling to bits over there.  Nothing to save. Hasn't been modernised in 40+ years.   Shame we cannot have a giant bonfire or skip fire in the garden.  Not allowed by local government.  It's a PITA as a skip of say 5m3 now costs 80K HUF (200 EUR).  Pricey.

Cynic

Hmmmph; who nicked the sun!  Currently, 12C and cloudy - just got back from walkies with Boris; forecasting to clear by 10, then a warm one, 24C and clear skies.  As I sit here in my office, the sun has just broken through, so I shall let Boris out to do his anti-pigeon/squirrel/postman/Amazon delivery van patrol.

Interesting Boris is on patrol.

Our woofly is always up for it but she's not being aggressive.  What she really wants is attention so she's barking and wagging her tail, saying, "Oi, people, I'm here, I'm available! Come and love me!".

We've made a small hole in the fence so she can stick her head out and be stroked by visitors and people passing by.   She's got quite a fan club.  One bloke drives by, stops his car, gets out and says hello, gives her a head rub and then drives away again.  That's dedication to the doggy cause.

It's too cold for the time of year. It's only 10C.  That's just really crazy.  There are black clouds and yesterday we had a shower of rain.  We should be into the mid 20s by now.  I don't know if this is global warming or not but it's not what we expected.  Even places like Blackpool are warmer than here.  Usually we can make everyone jealous!

Mrs F is taking advantage of good digging weather.  It's just dull.  Doesn't give me any enthusiasm.

She's digging to prepare for tomato planting.  I've also asked her to turnover the compost heap.

Eventually I think we'll have to get a gardener to come in to do the basics.   My back will never survive intensive gardening.

Yep, I thinking the same. I can manage cutting the grass but that's it. When I do come into some money I will spend a few €€€ and have it properly landscaped to make it easier. The trouble is, when the built the garden house, they just dumped the soil from the foundations just anywhere. So nothing is level. At one point there was also a pond and they did the same with that soil.

That digging is bending over and lifting heavy weights.   Soil is remarkably heavy.  Even heavier when it's wet.   It's a major exercise flattening out surfaces.  My bro hired a mini-digger with an attachment to smooth out the bumps.  When we had out garden done, we also got them to flatten it out.  But it's all full of stones.  Go down 30cm and it's rocks.  Never mind.

I don't need to tell you about bad backs.

It's all that hinging type effect around L4-L5 (Lumber spine joint L4 and L5).   I think I've got nerve impingement due to a dodgy disc.  It needs an MRI really.  I've done physio over the years, been to a chiropractor and it's really not helped that much and it's now developed into sciatica and even affecting my walking.  They could do a keyhole surgery to put it back.  TBH, I think I'd rather they did that as it's been going on far too long with conservative treatment.  And I'm sick of not being able to sleep properly because of it.   I'm not a patient patient.

Mrs F has no back problems per se but she did hurt herself lifting her Mum's hospital bed.  She says she knows something happens but she can get on with digging so it must have been a different set of joints.   Dealing with elderly or sick relatives who are bed ridden needs some serious mechanical assistance.   It needs a crane for many people.  They just cannot help themselves.

Anyway, we've reached dizzying heights of 13.5C.  I cannot believe this.  It's mid-May.  Even  in Ontario it's like 25C and in God's own county of Lancashire, it's 23C.   Actually I am not sure if it's God's own or God forsaken county.  Someone will know.

Currently, 11C and blue skies, forecasting a high of 20C.  I'm on the school run today, luckily I get to park near the school because I have a blue-badge, absolutely chaos around there normally.

Mein Gott, it's like the Costa Brava where you are.   Blue skies! Incredible!

All you need is a deckchair and a knotted hankie.

It's a pathetic 13.5C this morning.  It's really rubbish.

I can see one neighbour up a ladder trimming his hedge and the other neighbour is weeding a flower bed.  Far too enthusiastic for my liking.

I'm hoping for some sun and quite a bit more temperature this arvo as the dog will be wanting a walk.

Nah, this is Yorkshire mate, knotted hankies were banned in favour of the flat cap (of which I have several).  Due to my poorly back (and probably a bit to do of my pathological hatred of doing it myself), we have a gardener, a young lad who strangely is a qualified electrician, who decided he didn't like it and wanted to be a gardener and start his own business; he's a dab hand at brush pruning and is using our garden as a test ground for his college course work.

Next you'll be telling me rolled up trousers, tank tops and braces have been banned.

I dunno, standards seem to be slipping.

I'd have thought being a sparks would pay a lot more than gardening.

I never made it out today although the weather is nice, I'm resting up. Silly me, I pulled my back doing the weeding, I keep on forgetting that I'm not as young as I used to be and the back is delicate.

Tomorrow is looking promising, partly cloudy with a high of 21°C and a low of 11°C.

But they say rain will come on Thursday, nice on Friday, rain on Saturday, nice on Sunday. But that is bound to change, so I plane one day at a time, it frustrates me having unfinished jobs. I am my worst enemy I will see something needs doing thinking it will be quick job.... Then will have a few jobs on the go.

I feel for you.  I know all about those irritating back injuries caused by over enthusiastic gardening.  That was my original trouble.

I've got a few things I need to sort out.

I have a long standing appointment with my hi-tech bird bath. It's currently under wraps.  It essentially an old stone washing sink made of limestone.  It must weigh 100kg.  And it's going to need lifting to put it on a metal frame I made plus cutting some stone decoration for it.   That 100kg needs at least 4 people. Plus it needs painting with a special epoxy  resin to make it hold water.   I have the epoxy resin - it's used for concrete pond lining so it's inert for birds and wildlife.

Then there's the chicken house and the dog house (I put them both on wheels, so easy) and some football goals that need to be taken away back to the MIL's place.  Unfortunately we need to rent a truck for that.  But we'll get one with a rear lift so no-one has to really do their back in.

I'm considering making a frame for wood storage.  I have all the necessary raw materials.  I just have to cut it and weld it.  Looks like I'm my own worst enemy for making jobs for myself.

Ah Radler!  I remember those!   They are very popular here but I used to like ginger beer shandy better.  But ginger beer here - no chance. And sugar free binger geer - less than no chance.

It's only 14C here and showers.  It's very annoying.  Rain gods, thwarted the gardening gods.  I was thinking of doing stuff outside.  Stuffed.  Again.

fluffy2560

It's 11am and it's ONLY 11C despite brilliant sunshine.

Wind is 4 m/s from the North (hence possibly the colder temperatures).  Sunset is at 20.15h.

We are way down on the usual temperatures for this time of year.  We should be over 20C easily.

It makes no sense.

SimCityAT

12°C at the moment at 12.22pm reaching to 14°C. Mostly cloudy but it's dry. Tonight it will drop to 7°C

The ground is pretty sodden after yesterday's rain, I hope it will dry out, then I might go out into the garden.

Tomorrow it will probably not rain with only a 11% chance.

15C was the highest we got today.  It's OK if you're in the sun and sheltered from the wind, otherwise it's bloody cold.  Forecast for the weekend is a bit warmer, but more importantly it remains sunny, which is important because it's our village Gala weekend, not that I'll be going this year, it's too far to walk.

Have you thought about getting a scooter?  My Mum got one and it was quite speedy and easy to drive.

I worked on cutting stone and cementing my bird bath this afternoon.  It was foolish because tomorrow I won't be able to walk.  In the final stages, I had to get Mrs F out to mix the cement (actually lime cement).  I will have to get my son on the job for phase 2 (more cement mixing and pouring - I reckon I could use up to 100kg for the job, too much).  He should be used to building work as he spends enough time on Minecraft and crap like that.

Mobility scooter?  Yes, we have - one of the folding ones, it's one of our projects for this year, I'm just waiting to get our new car so we can make sure we don't get one that's too big for the back.

Yes, mobility scooter.   My Mum's was quite "road" useful. It had pneumatic tyres, lights and indicators etc.  I drove it once and it could go at a fair clip.  I think it had a range of like 20 miles on two very heavy batteries.  We sold it to a guy who was buying up (so he said) mobility scooters for a charity to export to Ukraine.

There are plenty of 2nd hand scooters about, which is a bit sad if you think about it.  There's a lady who we see at our local Morrisons (one of Mrs C's patients), she has a mobility scooter that she has covered in toy teddies, kids love it.

It's the certainty of death and taxes. We had to dispose of ours at high loss because we couldn't make anything back on it for the estate in any reasonable timeframe. So many are on Ebay. My brother took it, tidied it up and put it on a local web site and it sold in about 3 weeks.  We would have given it away under the right circumstances. We had other stuff like zimmer frames and walking sticks. No way to dispose of them. NHS didn't want them back either so they were stored for years.

Amazingly we saw some scooters on sale in Lidl and Aldi here. About £250 for a lightweight one to go in the car.  They quite often have mobility aids.

fluffy2560

Weather update at 17.50h.

High winds, dropping temperatures, large black clouds, rain forming up.  Very stormy looking.  Things are being blown around in the garden.   Only 11C and falling.

Had to put off dog walking as it looks like we'll be in for a torrential downpour in the next few hours.

Well we have just had a bit of rain 🌧️ not much at 6pm and it's 15°C. Sat in my man cave, which is quite snug, it keeps the heat in , and sat with just a T-shirt on oh a tracksuit bottoms.

Ok, I will change that, the heavens have opened, and it pouring down. I swear I can see the grass growing Infront of me, after having a sunny day. I still have a patch of grass that's 3 foot long to strim. Oh well by the time I get to cut it, it will be 4 foot.

Sunday, 09.50h CET

Dreadful start to the day.

Only 9C, rain 0.5mm since midnight and wind 1.3m/s WNW.

This is unusual weather for mid-May here in HU.  We're normally way past the early 20s with brilliant sunshine each day.   We went out last night and we had to put coats on!  Unheard of for this time of the year.

I am not hopeful for the rest of the summer.  I have jobs to do in the garden and it's always rain stopped play.   We managed to do some more cement work on the stonework for my birdbath but it started raining.  Again.

Balaton holiday season will be a washout if this continues.

BTW, looks like our grass needs mowing once a week.   That's a bit unusual.  We could do it once every 2 weeks before.  It must be the rain.

The doggy looks annoyed - I'm not walking in the rain even if she's up for it.

fluffy2560

19.35h

Only 9.8C, rain and drizzle, wind WNW 1 m/s approx.  Barometer steady.   Showing a forecast of cloudy with patches of sun.

At the risk of being like a broken record, it's just more of the same.  Rain, rain and more rain and if I didn't mention it, rain. Temperatures barely into double digits.  It might get better in the coming days but we're not seeing the usual mid-20s.  This is very seriously wrong.  My relatives in the UK tell me it hasn't rained there for 3 weeks.  It seems like we've got the British weather.  Did I mention the rain?

If this goes on much longer, it's going to blow up people's summer holidays in Balaton.

fluffy2560

11.15h

17C, mild breeze from N, 1.8 m/s.  Pressure lower.  Heavy'ish looking black clouds in between bouts of sunshine.  We might be on the upside of the dreadful weather we've been having.  My weather station has stopped reporting on UV.   I'll have to check that out.  Maybe the sensor is dirty.

Gardening planned today - got some spare limestone blocks I'm considering for a rockery.  Might move them towards the position.  Mrs F has not agreed to that yet.   One of my trees looks sick.  I think it's out grown its pot.   I had another one the same which I planted and it's absolutely flourishing.   So to save the tree, I'd better plant it.   Might have to take it to the MIL's place as we're running out of room.

Dog Walking - Mrs F and kids are at the cinema this arvo.  Movie doesn't interest me.

It's 18h and 18C.  Wind is gusting 5 m/s WNW and the barometer is steady at 1016 hPa.  That's middling in the pressure stakes.

We're expecting a mega warm spell too.  It's been a bit rubbish today. I was walking the dog and I felt I had to take a hoodie with me as I wasn't entirely sure what kind of weather we're having. .  As it happened I didn't need it but it did start spitting a bit towards the end of my circuit.  Not enough to make a difference.   I can see vaguely blue skies out the window now.  I was planning to mow the grass but I decided to wait for better weather.  Mrs Fluffy might do it instead of me.  That's another upside - me not doing it.

We're almost at the end of May and June will be upon us on Sunday.   Maybe this will be the end of the dreadful weather we've been having recently.    Nice weather spurs people into doing things.  There's too much gardening. I'm bribing my son to do work now helping in the garden.

Only 1 month and it'll be Balaton 1 time. That's the first visit of the season.
