Today's Weather

fluffy2560

22C today with a forecast for a bit of rain later this evening. Forecasting temps will be around this until the end of next week, when we are expecting our next heatwave, with a high of 29C at the weekend, that's followed almost straight away by a week of rain with temps falling off at the end of the following week.
End of the month we're off to Holland to see the family; just checked the long range forecast for Enschede and this link sums it up perfectly; word of warning, if you speak Dutch and are easily offended, don't follow the link. - @Cynic

Plain speaking didn't do anyone any harm!  Especially about Dutch weather which is more or less the same as the UK.

We went to the lake yesterday too, lake Velence at their strand.Hardly anyone there, it was nice and peaceful. Did not feel like sitting all the way to Balaton.Silly us we know what express train to take but they had some issues with trains and we assumed the train was ours but it was headed to Balaton.Thankfully we got off in Szekesfervar and went back to the strand.Good thing too, as we approached the station, the first stop on the line from Budapest, the smoke was all over, something was wrong with that train and they had people running back and forth trying to fix it.We got on our train back to the lake and noticed they had everyone get off the damaged train; What a terrible way to start their day, waiting for another train to show up, tons of people with suitcases all on the platform waiting around;Smart move to go back to Velence. In fact it seemed like another train had issues too, the older trains.It was only after 9 am too, track were overheated already;Suppose to rain today but I do not see any signs of that. - @Marilyn Tassy

Oh dear, the trains do seem to be suffering.  Some of them look really nice and modern.  But the old ones are still around and chugging around the place.  I understand they are in dire condition.  Well, we all know why that is - lack of maintenance and investment.   I was once on a train that caught fire - in England - it took quite a while before someone actually noticed where it was coming from.  The engine was showing flames and smoke and all the carriages were becoming too polluted to breathe.  When the train stopped, everyone just walked to the other side of the platform and caught the next train.   We did see the Fire Brigade turn up and put out the fire.  But all the commuters kept calm and carried on.  No-one really said a word to each other.

Had a bit of rain down here at Balaton but it was nothing at all really.   Wind was pretty high. I did manage to do some paddleboarding using the canoe paddle and sitting down.  I was going up the coast and the wind was at 90 degrees to me and was trying to knock me off and impede my progress.  I got off and walked.   Coming back was so much easier, I could paddle all the way back in a sitting position and the wind was generally pushing me in the right direction.  Now my back is giving me payback for all that effort.

We'll leave here Sunday.  Traffic I expect will be dire.  I'll go back first, just after lunch.  I reckon 30m+ of traffic jams. Roadworks south of Szekesfehervar all the way from Siofok.

We had a good downpour, today, had a high of 29°C. It's the weekend so no idea what it will bring up?

Marilyn Tassy

Was expecting rain in the city on Friday but nothing.

Very pleasant out today.

Next weeks forecast looks a tiny bit cooler as well.

No fun to be at the lake when it is windy out, only fun for windsurfers.

Sorry for your back.

We rented a canoe in Belize to have a day trip on the Macal river in San Ignacio.

It was a heavy metal one.

All fine and dandy going downstream early morning when we were well rested and fresh.

Not so fun going upstream back in the afternoon with the wind blowing against us.

I still hear my husband drumming out the sound of Row, Row, Row, like the beat of a drum as we struggled back.

Never again!!

I almost am willing to rent a kayak for an hour or so but then again, PTSD kicks in.

We had a nice kayak made for ocean use but I never learned how to roll over it it and pop up.

Sort of scary when you are not able to control all aspects of a situation.

I tried to practice underwater in our swimming pool with the kayak but never could figure it out, not strong enough I suppose.

Still loads of fun to use on a calm clear day not too far from shore.

I wanted to buy a place in Szekesfehervar before we bought in Budapest.

Not sure if we made the right buy or not.

It is a quiet city, sort of funky and slow but peaceful as well.

Another day blasted under the grille and 29C.  Hardly any wind.  Unlike yesterday.

Belize in a canoe - too adventurous for me.  I'd be worried about piranhas and crocodiles.   Was your husband banging on a drum while the slaves (aka guests) rowed the canoe cum galley down/up the river?   Sounds a bit too authentically dangerous to me.   Some years ago, we did do whitewater rafting in Austria.  I thought we'd lost our daughter doing that when we all fell out. I said we're not doing it again.

It's very odd with my back.  It's usually horrible in  the morning but after a bit of moving about it all loosens up and I feel like I could tackle Everest.  Ok, not really.   One foot wrong and it all flares up again.   Possible osteoarthritis.

Only thing that touches it is Ibuprofen which suggests it's inflammation.   Paracetamol (US: ~Tylenol) does nothing much.  Aspirin is more effective - also anti-inflammatory.    Aspirin is not that popular and here, it's all rip off branded Bayer products, not generics.  I can just buy like 16 tabs for 150 HUF in a supermarket in the UK.   Makes you wonder about the legality of it.  Mrs F has asked for generics in the pharmacy and they said they don't have them.  Sounds like nonsense.

I was in Aldi earlier today and I took a misstep and bang, hip hurts and limping.  This is getting literally on my nerves.  As usual, the kids don't want to help or don't care. Makes you wonder doesn't it about them? I asked for volunteers so I didn't have to carry the shopping bag but no-one agreed so I was on my own.  I've told them on previous occasions not to enter a caring profession where empathetic customer service is needed.

I will give the sitting down paddleboard technique another go this arvo.   I expect it'll be horrible tomorrow.

My diagnosis is sciatica due to a herniated disc.  I consulted Dr Google and Dr ChatGPT.   They've recommended I have a private MRI on my lumbar region and sacroiliac/hip joints.  And they even told me where to go.  If I do it privately I can jump the queues and get a proper answer instead of messing about trying physiotherapy (done that, doesn't work properly and takes too long).  It's not too expensive for a private MRI.  Maybe 100K HUF with contrast (do I really want that? could make things even worse) plus report in English on USB.

At least I'd know next steps so to speak.  Or next stumble anyway.

Forecast is rain for the next few days.

I have had a bad neck and back since a fender bender 47 years ago;

I do everything around my issue but for years it was under control with my excessive amount of exercise, yoga, meditation, stretching and resting when needed; Went to the chiropractor once or twice per week when I was a games dealer, standing on a closed area for hours is stressful on the back; I however liked dealing while standing rather then sitting all day long. I wore my custom made orthopedic shoes and only took pain meds on work days; Laid off of them on my days off.

It was controllable;

Now to this day I still do PT work and light yoga, used to do flow yoga which was a bit fast and intense was fun but my knees started to feel it after over 17 plus years of yoga;

My deceased sister had a terrible spine, always hurt but she drank to get relief, yoga is healthier!

Drinking is faster.

I was not exactly happy about paddling down the Macal river , just the two of us in sight all day long; Not counting the pigs and horses that joined in swimming here and there along the route;

Sucker fish in the river, we would jump in the cool off and sucker fish would be eating the sunscreen off our legs!Yucky feeling.

That was a good 35 years ago, probably more tourist friendly now; Rented the canoe from 2 local guys, one was allowed out of jail during daylight hours to be able to see his family and get his smokes on.

My husband is very diplomatic when it comes to chatting with local people; He bought them some beers after they started chatting with us when we were swimming in town; They offered the canoe the next day for only a $10. all day fee;

Looking back on it now, it probably was borrowed from someone without their knowledge!

Heavy metal thing,we could of gotten in real trouble if we had given up paddling; I almost did give up, arms were breaking with every stroke. I much prefered to sit pool side at the resort then have an adventure like that. Nice cold cocktail and nice clear blue pool.

My husband always likes to see the real deal when he travels and not experience the average spoiled tourist things. We are at odds with that; We usually do a bit of both. I still remember booking the trip and hotel in Belize City; The travel agent just about had a heart attack when I told her we wanted to stay in Belize city and not a resort on one of the cays. She said no one does that! I found out quickly why they do not do that!!  Best hotel in the city at the time and it had no window screens, had to lay in the dark because the bugs would eat you alive if the light was on. Shower pressure was weak, water just about warm, pillows and bed linens were mis matched and falling apart, the swimming pool however was nice enough.

Back issues, try taking 1,000 mg of magnisium daily .

Well, just back from my walk with Boris, and he has gone off to play with his mates at doggy daycare.  They put him in with the Spaniels and other Terriers because he runs them ragged.

The rain has stopped at last, the grass is turning back to green.  Currently, 14C, partly sunny, forecasting a high today of 20C.  The forecast for our little bit of North Yorkshire for the rest of the week and into the weekend is clear blue skies and climbing temperatures, to a high of 29C at the weekend.

I spent 6 months in Belize in the mid-80's; I was taken out for a meal by the local airline on my first night, we went to the Fort George Hotel and I recall the bizarre feeling sitting on the balcony looking out at the sea with the biggest t-bone I had ever seen.  The nights after that were not so spectacular, but fun was had by all.

Marilyn Tassy

Was off to the lake this morning but clouds appeared, another day then.

I think I remember that Hotel in Belize, Fort George. Not sure remember a nice old colonial looking building with a large wrap around patio with people sitting out. Painted white.

We were there in the mid 1990s.

Should of dined at Fort George, we walked into a local place for dinner and I swear there was no menu.

We asked what they were serving, the answer was beef or chicken with rice and beans.

We had chicken, or what was left on the bone of a chicken leg! No meat on the bone at all!!

For breakfast one morning we went to a small place with fans going overhead.

The server got an extra large tip from my husband for her great service, she came over every few moments to swat flies!!

IDK, forgot the name of the resort/hotel we stayed at for 3 nights in San Ignacio, it was nice and the dinner service was also great,husband had a steak as well? Said it was one of the best he ever tasted; Nice cocktail bar and nice clean swimming pool.Room was nice as well, not like the dump in Belize city.

Funny enough later as a games dealer in Vegas I worked with a cute Chinese lady who spoke Spanish very well because she had gone to school in San Ignacio, Belize and spent her teen years there; Small world;

No idea how she and her family came from China via Belize to NV.

Well, cloudy again, more rain tonight.

Interesting story from Belize.  I had an office out at the international airport and employed a local lady to clean for us; one day I came in early and found her knelt over a desk and plainly unwell.  I asked her if she was OK, she told me it was morning sickness, she was 4 months pregnant.  So, I sat her down, made her a cup of tea and we were talking while she got over her sickness; I knew her name, but was surprised to hear she had 2 children already (she didn't look a day over 16); so, I assumed she was married and I asked her if I should call her husband, she told me she wasn't married, that she was far to young to be married, so I took her home in my Land Rover and handed her over to her mum.

It did cause some damage - @SimCityAT

We had a similar experience except we had no electricity for about 12h.   A tree fell on the main power line into the village and brought it down.

I'm not at home at the moment, but from the video I've seen, it was truly apocalyptic.  LIke a hurricane.  I saw pictures of the clouds and  they were black and swirling.   Everything was off.    Never seen anything like it.  Fridges and freezers were off.   No lights, nothing.   Mrs F and the kids had to go to drive to McDonalds for dinner.

I believe Balaton was hit hard as well.  Reports said the front came in and lowered temperatures to 20C while further East it was still 30C.  That differential is bound to stir up stormy weather.  Boats were overturned, furniture blown around and damage to buildings hit by falling trees.  Mrs F reported that people in the lake were ordered further inshore.

I was at the airport when this storm was developing and we were delayed departing by 1h.  As we arrived at the terminal by car, we could see the storm developing with lightning.  It didn't look that bad.

Anyway, there are questions to answer.  Why does the village only have one power feed?  Redundancy suggests there should be at least two.

fluffy2560

Friday, 17.30h.

It's only 22C with about 3m/s wind in W direction.  The major thing is it's really humid.  Says, 48%, but feels like a lot more.  It's been raining a bit.

As I arrived into BUD airport this morning, it was very turbulent. I can see high clouds with dark heavy and wet looking undersides.   It was also sunny in places and very warm indeed.

Weekend starts here.  I think temperatures are going to be up near the 30s by tomorrow.

Hope it doesn't rain Saturday as I want to work on my hobby car  and get that out of the way.

I notice  the aftermath of the storm as well in the garden.  Lots of pine cones, twigs and sticks and things blown around.

SimCityAT

Just checked and its going to be a wet Saturday and it's hitting 30°Cs and again with a low of 13°C. I've got lots to do, a heap of Admin work for Expat.com so that will keep me busy.

It's probably best to do inside work when it's raining or inclement.   I'm not in a hurry to do anything after my trip to the UK.  I plan to tidy up the garden mainly plus the car.   But if it rains, meh, not doing that.

Whenever I go away, I see the effect of me not providing the extra pair of hands.  Usually weekday tidying is just forgotten about as the rest of them go about their daily work.  I don't have any "work work" per se so I do much of the drudgery.

Our eldest HU sprog is in Berlin for Lollapalooza.   Apparently it's very wet.  And not that warm.

Seems summer is returning to Hungary this coming week.

Was missing the lake.

Nice yesterday as well, not too hot for a morning at the farmers market.

Got a few bargains there.

3 sweet melon for 1,000;

Shared one last night, sweet, firm, just perfect. Hope the other 2 are just as nice.

Place is getting packed with shoppers this year. Not all the prices are reasonable though;

Some items are cheaper in the normal markets.

One women was selling 3 chard leaves for 400 forints; Just crazy; Walked on, found a guy selling them for 500 but he gave a dozen large fresh leaves. Picked those up.

I wonder how these vendors decide on a pricing point?

We sold at the Albuq. swap meet in the mid 1990s until we sold out items from our import:export business;

If you price items right, they move;

Biggest sellers were items I thought would never sell; My husband has an eye for picking things;

Children,s infant onesies were hot, infant socks and bed pillows. Had a garage full of infant bed pillows, flipped when he brought them home; Bought new for 25 cents each, sold for $1.25 in short order, people could not get enough of them. Children,s rubber summer shoes; My husband saw a few boys walking in the swap meet barefoot on the hot pavement; He called them over and gave them shoes.

IDK, some people have tough feet!

I can not even get out of the lake stairs without screaming when the metal get hot.

My bro walked on the hot pavement in Vegas in the summer! Look what happened, he lost his foot.

Off topic.

Mrs F said corn (on the cobb) was 700 HUF in the local supermarket.  However, there was a special deal at one of them for 500 HUF.   I don't remember which one.  700 HUF for one is crazy money for just corn.  Seeing a gap in the market is a great thing.  Skill we lack otherwise we'd be a gadzillionaires!

Weather is showing we're in for another heatwave.  It's 11am and already 28C and very sunny.   Almost no wind.  Humidity almost 50%.  Sunset 20.38h.  Days getting shorter.

We've got jobs to do like mowing the weeds.  I'm not feeling like doing anything due to "hard labour" yesterday.  We were chopping wood using my petrol chainsaw.  At the MIL's garden, branches had come off in the storm and some were dangling.  So pulled them down using some rope tied around them.  Then I chainsawed them into smaller bits.

Now I've had a better look around, I see the trees are interfering with the overhead power and telephone lines.  I've told the BIL, the trees need trimming.   I've told them all many times but they don't seem to get it.   It's the same at Balaton. The power cables are in the trees.   I'll have to fix it as the others won't. At the MIL's garden, the tree branches are rubbing on the house next door and on the MIL's roof.  Words fail me.

The other thing they seem to just let wash over them are pine trees with low branches blocking all the light out from the ground.  No wonder the flowers don't grow and ground is dead.   I reckon we need to chop off the bottom two metres of branches to get some light in there.

Yes, summer is back at least till mid week.

I would of gone to the lake today but I slept in too late.

Another day then.

Nice thing about being retired, all the time in the world at hand.

At least till the grim reaper visits!

700 for an ear of corn! No way!!

Saw 3 for 1,000 at the farmers market but even that is too much when you think about how easy it is to grow corn.

I no longer eat corn, hardly ever.

More greens and less bulky corn; Corn has a bad rep in the US, they spray it too much, I do not think they do that here in Hungary but still, digestion hates it. I will try corn chips but the brands here are terrible.Loved buying them fresh from a Mexican market in the states.

Here they are sometimes so stale, I broke off a crown eating them.

Need to be very careful trimming large tress.

Wait till fall as it is too hot and you may get overheated and dizzy and chop off more then a tree limb;

Falling off ladders is also a concern.

Watched an emergency medical show from the UK and seems so many men over age 60 have falls from ladders.

Someone should be helping you, at least holding the ladder steady and collecting the branches as they gather up.

We removed a wild tree from our front lawn near our house; Just a saw, shovel and allot of hard work; Took a few weekends to get all the roots out.

Looked so much nicer when the area was replaced with flowers and morning glories running up the side of the house.

Just be careful;

I dunno, retired or semi-retired in my case comes with old age baggage.  My hips and back play up.  I've never been truly ill or had any debilitating illness.  Or indeed, never stayed in a hospital.  I've been to hospitals of course for the odd ailment but never had to be kept in or anything like that.  So this is something I'm not used to. I think now approaching 65, the situation is going to change.  My parents lived for a long time - my Mum was 90 when she went on to better things and my Dad 99 before he took to the afterlife.

Looking at the family tree, my Dad's side were the longest lived.  Being into their 90s was not uncommon.  Fingers crossed.  My Dad, particularly had a slow heartbeat.  It always caused the doctors to rush over but actually it was really normal for him.  My younger brother is like that too.  So I guess he'll go on for a very long time.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again and again, youth is wasted on the young.

3 corn for 1000 HUF is quite good value.  We're shopping in the wrong places.  I thought 500 HUF was a bit high, 300 HUF doesn't sound unreasonable.  Of course, a lot of corn is grown here for animals. Out in the countryside museums, you see the corn drying and storage racks of yesteryear.  I like corn but not too much of it.  As you say it has some interesting effects as it passes through.  I guess it's good roughage.

I wasn't up a ladder for the branches. I told my BIL and Mrs F, I'm not going up a ladder to cut branches (it was a good 25 ft up there). I said I'd cut them when they were on the ground.  If anyone was going up, it was my BIL. And as it happened, lobbing the rope over the branches and all three of us tugging well out of the way and it just splintered and came down.  I was slightly in the wrong place and felt the leaves touch me.  I should have been a lot further away.  Lucky!

You are absolutely right.  Over 60, keep away from ladders.  And chainsaws up ladders.  So many people overestimate  their abilities.  Once you get lazy on safety with power tools, it's going to hurt, possibly a lot.  I wear gloves, ear protection and a hard hat.  And I always think twice or thrice which way is it going to go.  Even so, it's really unpredictable.

I notice the tree surgeon working around here and that guy always cuts branches by hand saw at first, then as the tree gets lower, he shifts to a small chainsaw.  He gets such a lot of work.  I've seen him down about 3 trees from my window in the past year.   But it's the fault of the homeowners.  They need to keep their trees in check, giving them haircuts say, every 5 years.  Just asking for trouble letting the trees run wild.  I love trees but not so much that they are going to endanger us and become a problem later.

I have a massive beef with my neighbour over his pine tree.  It drives me insane his pine cones dropping all over our garden. I reckon, from just this last storm, I picked up 100 pine cones.  They drop on our vegetable patch.   I've started dumping them over his fence.  He's got professional gardeners so I don't think he cares.  He's got another tree which dumps all its leaves into my shed gutters.  I think he should come around and sweep them all up and clean up my guttering.  As I get older, it'll start costing me money.   When I get up there to clear it out, I chuck the stuff into his garden.  But again, as he has professional gardeners, he doesn't actually notice.    If I was in the UK, I'd have sued the guy for clearing up his negligence and lack of neighbourliness.  Or got someone around to chop all the branches on our side and sent the bugger the bill!

"The number of deployments increased so quickly that we also requested support from the surrounding area," painted Wiener Neustadt's Fire Brigade Commander Christian Pfeiffer. The entire city area was affected. Therefore, the work was delayed overnight, and on Monday, according to Pfeiffer, the firefighters may "still have a lot to do". Eight firefighters were on duty. The Red Cross also set up a station in the fire station.

Trees knocked down like toothpicks, basements and garages had to be pumped out. Until Monday morning, 195 deployments were recorded.

In Lichtenwörth (District of Wiener Neustadt) there were also floods, among other things the main street was affected. The southern motorway (A2) was flooded in a construction site area, delays were the result.

Wow! Was that recently?  I mean today (Monday, 14th July 2025)?

Looks like extreme weather is here to stay with us.

Might be up and down per year but generally average temperatures are going to go up.

Longer term, we'll have water issues.

Meanwhile,  California is really suffering and now it's become more of an international issue.

I had plans to do some creative welding. I found a metal frame set of table legs at the MIL's place and it looks to me like, turning them upside down, I can very quickly convert them into a storage frame for logs.

There is a stream in the area, and it probably got blocked, causing it to overflow. We still have high temps, 30°C. Ment to have a Thunderstorm today, but they said that yesterday.

Drains eh?  We live on a slight hill.  When it rains, the road above floods and we end up with a torrent of water rushing down our road.   It's a flash flood really.  All the material like stones and sticks accumulate at the bottom of the street.  Anyway, the drains are pretty good and it just all disappears and 20m afterwards, you'd never know anything happened.

Pretty warm here and already 29C at 09.40h.

But next week will be much lower, into the mid-20s with rain, some heavy. Sunset at 20.28h today so darkness is creeping back in slowly but surely. Bah humbug, earth rotation around the sun, who needs it! 😉

Reminds me of Terry Pratchett, the author:

“Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.”

Cynic

We live at the top of a hill on the outskirts of a village in the Vale of York; the drains in the street are cleaned regularly by the council (I think because of the school a few yards down the road).  On the rare occasions when we get a lot of rain it does flood down to the village centre, it's why all the shops/pubs have stone floors.

Wellie boots needed!

When we lived in Austria, our drains were overwhelmed and we lived on a big hill.  It was just badly organised.  The previous owners had put stones down in the garden in order to lower maintenance but it just meant run off did exactly that, run off.   I was having to rod the drains during torrential downpours as stuff blocked it up - I reckon it was mainly ash from people's wood fires.  And my garage floor was lower and often covered in water during storms.  It would flow out under the garage door, down the drive and into the street.   We had one storm where we had flash floods and it killed a local who drowned in their own home.

I found it really bizarre we lived on a big hill and we were subject to flooding.  Seems almost implausible!

SimCityAT

Our drains are fine on our road because everything got replaced. Some nearby roads are not so lucky, its taking ages for them to complete the work. But ours is a main road through the town.
