Today's Weather

It's now even too hot to travel by train: Due to the exceptionally high temperatures, Austrian Federal Railways ( ÖBB) has issued a heat warning for the coming days. This means that train services may be disrupted, as the high temperatures are putting a significant strain on the railway infrastructure.

Temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius are also putting a considerable strain on the rail infrastructure. Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) advises postponing non-essential travel.

I asked ChatGPT how much the rails expand.  It said, steel rails 100m long expand 12mm per 10C rise in temperature.

Apparently, there's a thing called Sun Kink where the rails bend which could lead to derailment.

As the tracks are continuously welded, the bends will build up over distance.  The tensions are enormous.

I've been hiding inside on the grounds it will get cooler in the evening but it's getting hotter!
