Today's Weather

Very very sunny today.   Looks like we're over the hill with Spring now.

Thank you weather gods. Yes, the old Norse ones: Thor, Freyr, Skadi, and Njord.  I am getting in touch with my inner Viking.

Stats:  22C at 12.10h, wind 2.3 m/s from NNE, 1028 hPa. UV 3.7 (high, says wear a shirt - it's a prudish weather station), sunset is at 20.22h (was 05.06h sunrise).

About 1 month before we're on the slide down to shorter days - June 21.

Gardening is on the cards today  along with car wash, road test thrash down the motorway since the car was repaired . Probably a visit to Lidl is in there somewhere.  I have to buy a birthday present (probably a bottle of gin and accoutrements). Lidl is cheaper than most.

Still pretty ugh here; 16C and cloudy with rain showers; sky at the moment is completely overcast, we're still getting 750K solar download though.  It's forecast to start picking up tomorrow, reaching the end of the weekend with sunny and 29C.

Yay, summer has arrived, clear blue skies, currently 20C with a forecast high of 26C and good air quality; love it.  More of the same for the next 7 days.

Just got last month's power bill; £70 for gas, no charge for electric; we actually used £90 worth, but it was all covered by our Solar panels, plus we ran the car for the whole month and have effectively paid nothing to recharge it.  Mrs C jokingly said we pay more to wash the car, she's right.

Cost me 1000 HUF (about £2.50) to self jet wash our diesel car yesterday.

It's high UV here - 5.1 - wear sun protection.

It's 23C at 11.50h and it's very sunny.  Wind is 2.2 m/s from ENE. Humidity 38%.

We're expecting over 30C at the beginning of next week for several days.  Summer is here.

HU:

24C, blue skies with very high clouds.  UV 4.2, sunset 20.25h, humidity 41%.  Hasn't rained for a month - this is not good for the plants.

Yesterday was outside work - on our dog house.  More outside work today - garden seat painting, maybe wood storage design or just general tidying up.

I've got a scratch on the car door I need to try and polish out. Not sure how that happened.

About 2 months before we can have a first week holiday at Balaton

We will have 30°C - 33°C over the next few days, and its public holiday on Monday. Glad we cut the grass yesterday when it was much cooler. I can still enjoy the weather without sweating to much by sat weeding.

I noticed Lidl does carry all sorts of gins, Japanese ones too.

I got 1L of pink gin for 5000 HUF in Lidl.

But they don't have the botanicals (seeds/additives) to give gin more flavour.   Rumour is they are seasonal.  Surely it's the right season now!

Super nice today,  blue skies,  25C, breeze 2.7 m/s from NNW, UV 4.0 (high), sunset 20.26h (sunrise 05.06h).  Half moon.

I want to spray paint but the wind is a concern. I could end up painting the car by mistake.  Probably too sunny to do any gardening.  It'd be brutal.

And anyway, TWO whole days of holiday here in HU - Sunday and Monday.  It's Whitsun cum Whit Sunday.  7th Sunday after Easter apparently.   Commerates the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus's disciples (so says Wikipedia).

Yay, time for more DIY but nothing really stops here at Fluffy Towers for holidays.

I do hope the water level at the lakes are high enough this year to enjoy the water.

Last few years it was low.

Might have to stick with the spas this year, no fun to walk out a mile before the water reaches your waist at the lakes.

Got hot really quickly, last week wore a light jacket, today packed them all away.

Have to look into this season prices for spas, every year the get higher and higher.

Like to go a few times a week , perhaps buying a seasonal pass is a good idea?

I did enjoy sitting in the thermal water after a lap swim but with so many children in the same water, not a very good idea.

Gin, have not drank that in years and years although it is nice.

I am sure Balaton will be OK but Velence, I think not.  Best to avoid Velence.

There are reports of it being extremely low, almost to the point of it being unusable.  It really needs a pipeline to pump in some water to fill it up.   There was an article I read about Velence - here's the link: Lake Velence in critical danger: Continuous body of water could disappear.   If it goes down more, it'll be a risk to swimmers as it'll get more pollution concentrated.

Today is just brutally hot.   I think no way to go out and do anything outside until 4pm (16h) at the earliest.   The sun goes down 20.28h so maybe 17h (5pm) before it cools down.

Stats:  29C, UV 5.6 (huge), pressure 1035, 43% humidity, wind 2.2 m/s from NNW.

I've never actually had gin.  I think it's juniper flavoured vodka.

HU:

Hot again, blues skies.  29C on the weather station, 39% humidity, UV 3.4 (middling but cover up), sunset 20.29h, sunrise was at 5.01h (but birds start full on tweeting from 04h), wind 2.5 m/s from NW, pressure 1034 hPa and decreasing (rain likely?)

I've had to put up a sunshade to do outside work.  I'm using a tarp and bungee cords to block out the sun.  I'm going to do some painting at 16h.  Luckily house-wise, we're fully equipped with air conditioning and sun-blinds.  I also want to wash my hobby car at the jetwash.  Should wait until the sun goes down.

Unfortunately some job type work has arrived in my e-mail so I'll have to look at it.  I really do not want to go to work anymore.   I am hoping I can put anything on-site work off until September when school starts again.  I could then have the entire summer nearly or completely free.

AT: was 31°C in Vienna quite possibly more as other parts of the country it was 35°C. It felt a lot more anyway without any breeze it was quite unpleasant.

I saw today Warwickshire council has scrapped their Net Zero pledge because Climate change is a hoax  That's what you get with havingba 19 year being leader of a council with no education or experience, and of course being Reform.

Im so glad I'm not in thevUK anymore. Have you seen the videos of Reform saying they have no ideacwhat they are doing in a council meeting?

I heard the sound track from those reports. 19 year olds will not have run formal.meetings. They really should have mentors in place to help them through the process.

Reform are a bunch of cowboys really and their leader seems to have been involved in some odd financial dealings.  Maybe not as guilty as an SNP treasurer.

30.2C on the weather station, 3.1 UV moderate, pressure 1023 hPA relative, 4.4 m/s from W, humidity 35% and sunset 20.30h.

I am working on my "mushrooms" again today.  Yesterday I painted the tops red.  Now I will fix them together with rods and bolts and paint the bottoms with bitumen to stop them rotting.    I still have not decided to paint white spots on the red tops.  Then they'd be toadstools.  I am trying to encourage my art student daughter to help out with design of the spots but she's not joining in so far.

I'm working on my mushrooms  because I don't want to read the real work e-mails I've been sent.  I am burying my head in the sand workwise.

31°C in Vienna today and unexpected rain, didn't last for long. Mabe 30 minutes. But it didn't clear the air which I had hoped for.

We had thunder overnight, woke everybody up.  Lightning ground-strikes just outside the northern edge of the village, caused a bit of fuss.  Forecast for today is currently 18C, rising to 27C this afternoon; they were forecasting rain, but that's now gone.

We're way down on the hot weather today.  Weather station is showing 22C which means we don't have to keep the dog inside and out of the sun too much.  Instinctively she knows what to do of course but 30C+ is way too hot for a doggy with thick fur. We have to intervene and keep her inside.  The cat seems to be enjoying it regardless as she's always working nights. Anyhoo, looks like a good day for doggy walking.  We'll see if Mrs F is up for it when she gets back from work.   It's more than a dog walk, it's a chance to catch up and talk about whatever we fancy.

Meanwhile, UV is 3.7, humidity is 1028 hPa, humidity is 25% and it's windy (again),  5 m/s from the NW.  Total blue skies and no sign of rain.  We really need a good downpour for the garden.  Fairly typical weather for May in Hungary.   We might not see a good soaking for 3 or 4 months.  We don't have water shortages (unlike the UK).

And in more gardening news, I made a hole in my fence for hedgehogs and amazingly we saw one use it.   We're very keen on hedgehogs in the garden at Fluffy Towers.   I looked at the bird box - 7 eggs - and a bird has been seen going in and out by Mrs F.  I haven't seen one for ages so I thought it was abandoned.  This is the second set of eggs in this season.   We are doing our bit to increase the blue tit population hereabouts.

We're doing our bit for Bees around here; May was declared Bee month, so no grass was cut and gardens left alone for the bees to do their thing.  Mrs C has made a Bee bath, so no more stinky bees either.

Scorchio!

It's really cooled down here.   We don't have to use airco at night now.  Probably 10C lower but still really pleasant during the day.

Currently, 18C with a forecast of 22C later this afternoon.  Pollen levels are good (low 29), but air quality is not so good (moderate 92), all of which I put down to the climate and high temps we've all been experiencing.  They're forecasting rain for next Monday onwards which will bring the important things back down to OK.

As you'd expect, the solar is amazing in these conditions.  For the 3rd month now I've paid no electric power charges and got money back, which is good news when you read of the price increases here in the UK.

Very nice it seems back in Blighty.  We are experiencing the same weather pretty much all the time. At least for the past few days.   No idea of AQI.  Or solar generation.

There's one thing which is really annoying today is the wind.  It's windy yet again.  It always seems to be windy these days. Showing 3.1 m/s with gusts up to 5 m/s.  Our sunshades do not do well in the wind. Like giant sails.  We have to keep taking them down.

Meanwhile, 23C at 15.30h, sunset 20.32h, low humidity 29%, steady pressure 1031 hPa UV 3.4 (middling).

If the humidity goes lower, we'll get a build up of static and then we'll have a massive thunderstorm.

Not a good look for today, the 1st June and the official first day of summer

Cloudy, slight drizzle and temperatures down after the excellent sunshine of the past week.   It's not really raining enough to do good for the plants.  We need a good downpour to make a difference.

As of 12.30h, it's 19.3C, wind 1.9 m/s from the West, pressure 1020 hPa relative, cloudy on the barometer,  Sunset at 20.35h. Sunrise was 04.56h.

I had outside work planned but looks like that's not going to happen as I need dry weather for painting.

Same over here atm and they're forecasting similar for another week.  Good news is that our solar still works when it's cloudy, not as well as when we have blue skies, but enough to live and recharge our batteries, with a bit leftover to sell back to the Grid.

Using my hi-tech observation equipment, the No. 1 eyeball, I can see high white clouds with dark bases swirling about.  We're in and out of sunshine.   We're expecting heavy rain from tomorrow so today's the day for lots of outside work.

At 11.20h, it's 22C, with 1022 hPa, UV at 4.6 (high, precautions advised), sunset at 20.35h (sunrise 04.56h), humidity 50%.

Now we have own picture upload, here's what I mean (from weather cam on my roof):

1780392622_28600_810592_1.JPG

The tower on the distant hill in the middle of the picture is Erzsébet-kilátó (Elizabeth Lookout).  It's 527m ASL (Above Sea Level) or 1729 ft in old money.  It's the highest point in Budapest.  There are numerous paths and walks to the tower. And it's free.  We sometimes take the dog up there depending our enthusiasm.

I am sometimes working on streaming my webcam with weather overlay.  Just haven't got around to completing it.

p.s. Photos of Hungary from the air - in Hungarian but click the pics.  Interesting.

Bit of rain is good for the land.   Mrs Fluffy has received a blackberry/raspberry tree (yes, tree) as a gift and now we have to plant it.  It's a substantial plant -  2m tall - with nice edible berries on it.   There is a white berry version but they are almost impossible to buy apparently.  I had never heard of raspberry trees.

That discussion let to great language confusion over Lime trees.  Apparently Lime trees (aka Linden trees) are nothing to do with the citrus fruit lime trees.  I'd always remembered the famous tree street in Berlin - Unter den Linden.  I thought it was fruit trees with Limes but no, not true.  Linden or Lime trees are a different species (genus Tilia according to Wikipedia).  It was a minor cultural HU/GB kerfuffle.  Language got a bit fruity too.  Mrs F and I never argue about anything except fruit related matters.  We're still not resolved on Avocados being fruits or vegetables.  I'm now maintaining it's a nut just to make trouble.

A large hole has appeared in our garden (for the tree), dug by myself and Mrs F last night.  Only about the first 10cm is earth here.  Everything after is compacted mixtures of stone and rock.  It's all limestone around here, so it's very soft material except when it's in the ground.  Limestone melts when faced with acid rain. Even so we had difficulty working this hole and I had to get my hammer drill (on chisel setting) to bash into the ground.   Anyway, it's done and Mrs F is buying some strong compost today to line the hole to give the tree a good start.

Reminds me of the old joke, "A large hole has appeared in a local street. Police are looking into it".

Meanwhile, about a week and our sweet cherries will be ready.  I think we can easily get two bucketfuls of the tree, possibly 3 or 4 buckets if we can safely get high enough with a ladder.

I found a large ants nest in the garden so I dug it up and put it in the compost heap. I wonder if it will do any good?

Boris I know is one (senior?) dog but I'm wondering if the other one is Doris (junior?).  I am sure I've asked that before.

I was thinking at one point of getting another Golden Retriever rescue dog to match the one we already have.  We'd have to change the incumbent's name as the obvious thing is to call the new one Salt and the current incumbent Pepper.   I did think Fish and Chips but no, Chutney and Vindaloo, nah, Gin and Tonic?, Ginger (Beer) (and) Shandy?   Looking back it was easier to name the kids.  I am sure our eldest Rover disagrees.

The two games I used to play with gusto is Age of Empires and Half-Life.   Both available online now via the Steam platform. I did buy the online version but I somehow bought the wrong one which was not possible to use in multiplayer games.

Anyway, 24C on the Weather Station, completely overcast, sun trying to break in, wind 1.6 m/s from the South, UV 2.2 (moderate), pressure 1017 hPa relative.  Sunset 20.36h.

I'll get my coat.

Boris is 5 years old, the other dog is my sons (he's gone on holiday), she is Luna (a cross Alsatian/ some other enormous dog) she's a natural guard dog (ask the two idiots that tried to break into his house to get his car keys) - she brought them both down, she has a growl and bark that is enough to put anybody off.  She's getting on a bit now, but she knows us well as my son was still living at home when he first got her as a pup, so this is her original home.

We had a couple of Retrievers before Boris; the first one passed when he was young (8), the second one was a rescue dog (I can never understand why people get rid of Retrievers), he lived till he was 18, an amazing dog.  Boris is a lovely dog, but he's a Patterdale Terrier, so while he sits with me, he's lovely, but if the postman enters the street, the growl of death starts low in his throat, and gets louder as she gets nearer; if she enters the front path, he goes ballistic, yet if I take him out in the street and he meets her, he's adorable, so he's territorial, any strangers I have to introduce them to Boris, after that he's fine,

I want to know who authorised this sh1t weather in the middle of summer?  All that work getting the garden looking nice, and I'm sat outside in a Barbour jacket, hat & gloves!  Annnnnnd, my flipping weather app has decided to go AWOL, aha found it, it changed its icon, jeez.

Anyway, 17C and cloudy, forecasting rain later on, the only good news is the solar is still collecting power, oh, and the house is now covered in Orange flags, guess the World Cup is coming soon.

The reason why your weather is rubbish is because all the good weather is over here.  Oranje is good! Love that!

We're basking in sunshine, it's 27C, UV 4.5 (high), 1028 hPa relative, 1.3 m/s breeze from WNW.  Humidity is low at 42%.  We've got up to 31C Monday and Tuesday and then it'll be back to low 20s for a week.

It's so warm, our woofly/furry friend cannot go walkies until about 19h when the sun has gone down.   If we took her out she'd get heat exhaustion.  As a GR,  she's got a massive shaggy coat. Like humans, she has to stay in the shade and drink plenty.  She hides under the decking in hot weather.  She knows what to do. We have her usual water bowl filled up but she also has an emergency bucket out by the patio (more properly decking as it's on a slope). I monitor her usage by looking at the levels.

Very odd thing recently is we've got mosquitoes.  Why?   It hasn't really rained for weeks.  Not properly so where are they all coming from?  There are no pools of water nearby.  The only thing I can think of is drip trays for the potted plants. A drop of olive oil should create a film the mosquitoes cannot break through - my theory anyway.  Mrs F's cousin told me she is also plagued by them.   And she lives 11km away so it's not local just to us.

Strangely enough in other insect news, I heard someone say they never have to clean their windscreen of squashed insects now. I remember this being a standard car maintenance issue but nope, not now.  I never noticed Never have to clean it.   It must mean all the bugs have disappeared.   That's a serious ecological disaster if they are dead.

As I may have mentioned, we had a bees nest in one of our bird boxes. I moved the box to be next to my annoying neighbours.  Now we never see the bees. I made a mistake and I may have killed the nest.  Read online, bees never stray more than 3 miles away from home and moving a nest 3ft is the limit. I moved it about 20ft.  I may have done them in.  Oh well, shame.  I should have known better.  My Dad had bee hives for many years and if he was still around, I could have asked him. He was a prize winning apiarist.  I will have to use the AI ChatGPT version of Dad.

Mrs F and No. 3 daughter are up the cherry tree on ladders.  Hungarians love their fruit trees - we can look forward to grapes, apples, raspberries and plums soon enough.   We've got a bumper cherry crop this year and they are really tasty. I've suggested Apple and Cherry Crumble with generous fruitiness to try and use them effectively.   Too many cherries will open the sluices at the rear end so moderation is the best idea.

The Raspberry tree also needs harvesting.  Also very prolific.  Really nice.

Today's cherry harvest (and we could fill this bowl 4 x easily):

It was 21C at about 07h this morning.

Now, at 12.29h, it's 29C, 4.2 UV (says 8 on the weather station app), sunset 20.41h (sunrise 04.53h).

It's lovely really. I think gardening and DIY.  I've got some repairs to do here and there.

Our son is down at Balaton with his GF and  our daughter is sleeping in as she had a Korean exam yesterday.

I've posted about the cat chaos.  Our puss has now disappeared. Presumably she'll be hiding somewhere.  She was even scared of the neighbours dog and she ignores it normally.

Thinking of Apple and Cherry crumble.

Grrr - 14C with rain showers, but it starts climbing back up (slowly) to the weekend; the Met Office reckon this is the start of our summer.

Off out now to get Boris from Doggy day-care.

Old adage applies "up North", wait five minutes and it'll all change anyway.  It's brutal here. I've had to come inside as it's way past 30C.

I saw a ludicrous poodle  downtown yesterday.  All pom-poms and terrible shaping and overly coiffured to show off it's meat and two veg at the back end.  It even had ribbons in its fur and kind of a platted beard.   Everyone seeing it was laughing.   One of the "nouveau riche" dogs undoubtedly.  They think it looks nice but it's just a big joke and symbolic of a lack of taste.  Wouldn't last 5m up on t'moors faced with a sheep.  And Boris would have it for breakfast.

Yesterday it was 30°C blue skies! Today 18°C cloudy and it pissed it down.

As usual, Austria weather blows here immediately after. It takes 12-24h to reach us. Radar showed heavy rain.

Last night we had a thunderstorm, heavy rain and high winds.  It's really cooled down from the 30Cs.  It's bonkers how windy it is around here.  Quite a lot of scudding clouds.

So today, we have 17C, 62% humidity, 0 UV showing, wind 2.5 m/s from WNW, sunrise 04.52h and sunset 20.42h.

Best make the most of that daylight as in 9 days, we'll be going the other way to shorter days.

12C and raining, solar is still drawing just under 1k watt; got soaked taking the dogs out this morning and had to put the heating back on when I got back.

I previously spoke of apple and cherry crumble. I've settled for mixed zero sugar fruity pies.

I used up what we had: cherry, apple, raspberry, banana, raisins, touch of freshly squeezed orange juice, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, zero sugar vanilla and erythritol (sweetner)  with puff pastry topping (ready made from Aldi). Tried to make little sculptures on top from left over pastry. Middle one is supposed to be a rabbit.

I tried one with sour cream (tejföl) and they are quite nice.  We have giant bowls of cherries from the tree but my little pies hardly make a dent in the amount we have. I was thinking of making a large rumtopf.  It would be one way to preserve the cherries.

Had a few shitty days / rain / thunder. Today its 18°C. Not complaining because we really did need the rain. The grass was yellow, although we could use the sprinkler, I am reluctant to waste the water, grass doesn't die and always grows back.

Yes, it will grow back.  Our grass looks quite scrubby but it always did.  We don't have a water shortage around here but farmers are suffering out in the countryside.  The fields definitely need some rain.  And if there are problems on the farms, it's going to worse downstream for us too.

I am of the opinion, we're going to way of Mars. CO2 will keep all the heat in, water will disappear and the human race will disappear.  Humans are much the same as locusts. Eat ourselves to oblivion.
