Today's Weather

fluffy2560

Forecast said 31°C today, but our weather station says 35°C at 4pm. Its forecast to be 36°C on Wednesday so I'm guessing I can add a few numbers to that. Could it hit 40°C?
I'm sat in my man cave, with the door open to the garden, and just with just my boxer shorts on. They promised at Thunderstorm at 2pm, and still waiting for it. I hope we get it soon as the air needs clearing. - @SimCityAT

We're at 33C now at 16.20h.  Had the airco on but it was getting chilly inside so stopped that and switched to fans.   It's also showing rain and cloud on the forecast.  Things look very droopy and wilting in the garden. I think we need some rain, not to clear the air so much but to get those plants soaked and wet.   Our grass looks burnt.

Sunset at 20.45h so hasn't started to shorten yet but it will absolutely start to drop a minute or two per day.

SimCityAT

Oh just heard a bit of rumbling, so hopefully it will be on its way.  Our plants look green enough, but the lawn does have some yellowish patches. That does indicate that we need rain.

Local forecast is for about 8mm of rain overnight.  It's still 30C at 19.50h.

It usually plummets at night here.  We've seen it down to 11C this past week yet over 30C in the day is forecast.

It's nice to sit outside though.   We've had to put blankets on us for a while when the sun is setting.

fluffy2560

12.20h

Brutally hot outside 31C.  Blue skies - absolutely no clouds.  Windy at 3.1m/s from SE.  Humidity low.  Sunset 20.45h.

Today is a day not to be working outside.  It's a bit too warm.   I had planned car repairs but I'm not sure.  Maybe after 16h when the sun is waning.

If we had solar panels, we'd be raking it in.

fluffy2560

08.20h

It's going to be a real shocker today heat wise.  It's already 30C+ outside this early in the morning.

There are warnings on the weather sites of temperatures going over 37C+.

This is not a day for working outside.

Otherwise, sunset 20.45h, wind negligible, humidity low.  Pressure steady at 1016 relative hPa. Blue skies with not a cloud to be seen.   And this is likely to continue all week.

Update:

Hungary: Authorities issue Red-level Heat Warnings

As of 26 June 2025 authorities have issued Red-level Heat Warnings in Bacs-Kiskun, Bekes, Csongrad-Csanad and Fejer counties. Additional Orange- and Yellow-level Heat Warnings are in place in areas nationwide. Temperatures in some areas may exceed 84 F (29 C). Elevated temperatures can result in utility outages, prompting travel disruptions. Individuals should take appropriate weather precautions and consult local meteorological sources for further information.

17C here and it's pi@@ing down with rain; I'd just got back from walking Boris and the heavens opened.  I've just checked the weather forecast, and it says no rain for at least the next 2 hours!!!

My webbrowser just updated itself and I think because I do a lot of stuff in Dutch, it now offers me the AI version of what I'm talking about, but it automatically translates it into Dutch, so, as an example, here is the local weather for Sherburn in Elment, maar in het Nederlandse:

"Het weerbericht voor Sherburn in Elmet, Leeds, is vandaag: hoofdzakelijk bewolkt met regenbuien, die in de ochtend misschien zwaar worden. In de late namiddag wordt het droger en zonniger. Het wordt een frissere dag dan de afgelopen dagen met een maximumtemperatuur van 20°C. Vanavond zijn er nog zonnige perioden, maar 's nachts wordt het weer bewolkter met regen, vooral in het noorden."

Now that is scary - the bit where it thinks Sherburn in Elmet is in Leeds I mean!  I wonder what it thinks of climate change, I dare not ask it.

Mrs F just told me it's not worth watering the burnt grass as it's so full of weeds, it's making it worse.  We'll have to take it all out and replace it with professional turf.  Maybe in the autumn.   Not taking the dog today.  She'll die in the heat.  I'd probably keel over.  At 10am, it's 34C.  It's crazy time weather wise.

I understood 99% of that Dutch.  I don't know if I mentioned it but I have a certificate in the Dutch language which I obtained in the 1990s when I lived in Eindhoven.  I haven't had to drag up my Dutch in years.  But interesting that possibly it's now fully baked in because I could just read that. Way back then in the 1990s, I was able to actually read a novel in Dutch with only occasional use of a dictionary (before smart phones etc).  Couldn't read one now.  And in Dutch, it'd be a bit irrelevant as I don't live there. Exposure  to Hungarian here isn't really the same as a proper course.  I should think about that - finally - and do a proper course.   It's not like I don't have the time these days, pre-retirement, once I've burnt out my DIY projects.

The AI thing is somewhat of a mixed bag. I use it to analyse and summarise complex texts because these days I've got the attention span of a goldfish.    It's quite useless for some subjects and it waffles on with indecision waxing and waning over interpretation.  I think STFU and give me the headlines/bullet points.

I'd spoken my version of Dutch for years, it was the language we all used at home, but I think what I spoke was where the original phrase "Double-Dutch" came from.  Anyway, Mrs C always said that I spoke Dutch like a native, of Istanbul, so when it came to the end of my service, I opted for a local discharge (we lived in Munster) and a Dutch language course for my resettlement, I thought if I wanted a decent job, I would need to speak it properly.  I did the course, got my diploma, we all moved to a lovely house in Enschede and I got the first job I applied for, which happened to be in the UK ........................... we still speak Dutch at home and apparently I still speak it like a native of Istanbul.

Haha, like a native of Istanbul.  Makes  you perfectly qualified to run a shoarma and pommes shop.

I learnt German after Dutch and when I went there to work, everyone thought I was Dutch as my pronunciation was so clearly influenced by the softer sounds.

I still retain that and of course German is supposedly dominant around here as we're close to Austria.   On the other hand, it's not often though we hear anyone speaking German, they usually speak English if they speak any other language other than Hungarian.  It's very strange as my village is nominally a German one.  That means usually there's some German speaking clubs, German kindergartens and magazines published by the local town hall and we've just had our beer festival.   But that's about it.

My first work location in Germany was Bonn but I also had assignments in Duesseldorf, Hannover, Munich and Wiesbaden.  Out of all of them, Bonn was the best (as it was the capital then) and thereafter Munich.   Great spot to live.

P.s. bet we have power outages. Everyone will have their airco on.

Today, Carinthia experienced the hottest June day in history. The mercury rose to over 38 degrees.

It's crazy stuff.  It's 18.20h and still 35C.

I am still working on my car after a tree ran into the middle of a car park and impacted my bumper.  I wish people would keep control of their trees.

I had to stop every once in a while and get into airco'd space.   Really tough going, what with welders and grinders being used and resulting in hot metal and dust.  More dirty work than a 1970s X rated movie.

Trying to complete it before we go to Balaton as no bumper on the car will attract attention.

I was wilting as much as the plants have been these past days.  Phew!  I'm thankful to Channel  9 and Poula Fisch for the weather forecast! Sorchio!

12.12h

We had a 7mm dump of rain accompanied by lightning and thunder.  As usual - for here - some houses were damaged by lightning and the subsequent fires.  It always seems to happen that houses burn down.   A lot of people don't have insurance.  That's very short sighted.  We have damage in our garden, things blown over and stuff moved around but nothing important.  And at least the plants got a drink.

Anyway, it's 24C, cloudy, slight breeze 2 m/s from WNW, humidity 66%, sunset at 20.45h.  Tiny bit fresh. Pressure steady.

We're going to get back to 30C this arvo.   I should be able to finish my car repairs if the rain keeps away.

Partly sunny, 26C here; just got back from sorting out a new bathroom and the big shop.  We bought Boris a paddling pool to help him cope with the heat.

I got a new fan from Amazon.  16 cm blade, mains and rechargeable battery operated, recharges via a USB C socket and has a telescopic stand, and best of all, it runs silently; somebody has gone to a lot of effort in getting the blades so well-balanced.

Sounds like a good buy.  If it was rubbish, it'd be good bye.  Amazon are really good at refunds.  At least recently.

As I've mentioned in the past, I  have a lot of IT gear. Some of the devices come with temperature controlled fans. It seems to me, they've done the opposite of making it quiet, they've attempted out noise Concord on afterburners.  In some of this kit, I've replaced the factory fans with upgraded silent fans and wow, what a difference.  The new fans aren't cheap but they save your lugholes.   I'm planning to change the fans on one particular item we recently acquired.  It currently has an annoying habit of the fans "beating".  They are almost running at the same speed but not quite.  So you hear the approximately the same base line frequency and then the oscillation between each slightly out of sync fan.   If I listen to it, rather than ignoring it, it's like someone is drilling in my head.   Luckily some days are worse than others - hearing loss does have its upside.

Anyhoo, been working on the car - brutal again in the sun and probably 28C+.  And a very high wind.  What is it with wind these days?  Everyday is like being in a hurricane.   Sunset 20.45 again (-33s on yesterday, it's a slippery slope).

We also all got sunburn working on garden stuff.  We had to pump out the popup pool.  We've got a pump that does 19,000 litres/hour (yeah, right, in your dreams Chinese pump manufacturer, maybe it'll do 5000 litres/hour which is still quite a lot)

That tree that ran into my car snapped off a kind of lug on one side at the rear.  I'll have to weld a new one on.  I don't like welding on my car but the bumper needs it and it's not a big issue really.    I thought I'd finish up today but looks like no such luck.  Never mind, when we come back from Balaton, I can start again.  I have to replace the parking sensors anyway.  All the cables broke off.  Plastic trim will need some self tappers in there or some decent glue - easy.   At least I got it all level and straightened out.  Looks OK.   Sorry, not very interesting.

Good luck with that.  We're still awaiting probate here in HU for the MIL.  It'll take months, possibly years to come to a conclusion even after the legal process is finished.   MIL's garden is the same, definite OMG, as it's massive.  Almost a full time job.

Currently, 21C with broken clouds; forecasting a high of 29C later this afternoon.  Tomorrow they're forecasting 31C!  They reckon we'll be having tempests tomorrow, not seen one of those since I was in Belize, but will be interesting to see how the drains cope.  Boris is already doing his Pat Splat and Slide around his pool; he really needs his hair shortening in this heat, so he's off to the groomers tomorrow to sort that out.  We may go and visit our eldest - she has aircon in her house!

Cynic

Forecast for today hasn't changed here; scorchio!  It's for the days like this that I had a couple of Skylights put in my office; most of the year they remain closed, but today they'll be open.

Just been out to give the flowers a drink before the sun hits them.  Now forecasting lower temps 23C > 20C and some rain showers for tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Some interesting climate facts (courtesy of my Windows PC weather app) which has weather data going back 74 years for where we live; we now get 5% more sun and 8% less rain.  The weather extremes (so, hottest, coldest, wettest and windiest times over the 74 years has shifted back one month, for example hottest was July (it's now June).  So, for all the doubters, the climate is changing - numbers don't do politics.

Anyway, off to the groomers with Boris - hope you all have a great day and stay out of the sun.

Down here at Balaton, we're expecting 37C on Thursday. Our Goldie has to stay in the garden. She knows what to do anyway. She lies on cold concrete and hides under bushes and goes into a snooze coma.

We need to avoid the sun, it's like being under the grille.

More worryingly the cat has disappeared. She was in a fight with something and went up a tree but she came down after 30 minutes.  She seemed to get over it really quickly but now, she's MIA.

I reckon not enough is being done to secure water resources. Europe will experience droughts like the Sahara by say, 2050. Maybe migration will increase to the North so as to keep cool.

Marilyn Tassy

IDK, it is hot but for some reason it does not bother me as much as it used to do.

It is not the heat, it is the humidity. I have no idea if age or weight as anything to do with body temp rising or not.

We went to the lake last week, probably will go again this week;

Not in the mood yet for the spa.

Decided that sitting in hot water with children entering the bath is not very good for ones health after all; Old people with illness is not a great idea to share water with either;

It is boring as well; Lap swimming is the only way to go. Just do not have as much steam as I used to; How many laps can one do in a day at 70? I used to do at least 20 per spa visit, these days if I make 12 I am doing good.

Some people seem to go on forever but they barely move, I pass them coming and going but I am the one getting worn out.

Much nicer and overall more peaceful at the lake.We are usually early birds and have our pick of shady tree to relax under; Only issue is by mid day strangers are sitting on your lap, or nearly so.

We rather just go to a spot made for 2 then one made for a party of 10.

Only thing I miss about C 19 days was the rule about keeping ones distance from others!

12:30 and only 28 C inside our place;

Only have one tiny fan on, might start the big fan later if needed.

These brick buildings seem to keep the cold out and the heat out, until late afternoon when full sun hits the side of the building.

About a third of the apts. in our building have A/C units;

My husband hates A/C gives him a headache.

Had a huge new Carrier brand A/C unit in Ca; only used it once in awhile, the electric bill would of been murder if left on all day. In Vegas I would turn it on and my husband would shut it off not because of the cost but his head hurt.

Overhead fans are nice they help allot.

In super hot afternoons in Vegas, even we turned the A/C on for a few hours.

We had A/C in a few of our cars but did not use it much.

My parents had a large water cooler unit in our family home, IDK about those, work to a degree.

Of course in humid climates water cooler make it muggy.

Good thing it is only hot here for a very few months.

The average electric bill in the US for a standard size home is around $350. per month in summer, Hawaii is more, they do not have a power station, they use oil for their source of electric power.

Better to jump in the lake as the saying goes .

Good idea! No point going there to sit in an air-conditioned apartment because it's too hot to go out.

Nice breeze here at Balaton but the sun is just too much. We'll go to the lake when the worst is over, like when sunset begins.

fluffy2560

Been in Balaton and it was mega warm but very high winds. Far too high for beginner paddleboarders. Winds knocks you off and the winds are usually southwards towards shore, i.e. to shallow water.

High winds and high temperatures expected to continue for the rest of the week.

Apparently its caused by a heat dome over Europe and global warming 1.5C higher average temperatures.

Wimbledon match suspended after spectator collapses

The Wimbledon Centre Court opener between Carlos Alcaraz and Fabio Fognini was suspended for around 15 minutes today after a supporter fell ill.

Chair umpire James Keothavong announced a pause to play as medical staff and stewards arrived on the scene, and an umbrella was put up over the spectator.

After being alerted to the commotion in the crowds, Alcaraz was seen running over with a bottle of water and handing it into the crowds.

Alcaraz went on to pick up a victory at Centre Court after play resumed.

The incident comes as temperatures climbed up to 33C in parts of the UK today.

It was also Wimbledon's hottest opening day on record, according to the Met Office's provisional data, with a temperature of 32.9C recorded at nearby Kew Gardens, which is higher than the previous Wimbledon opening high of 29.3C.

- @SimCityAT

They should move it inside or have stadium covers or retractable roof.

Players train for it but the public do not.

In the lake today, I was wearing a hat and protective clothing (a thin wetsuit/shorty) but many people were just in their swimming gear. And very few people have UV shirts on themselves or their kids. Very short sighted.

I had sunstroke a few times and its really not funny at all.

Centre court @ Wimbledon has a retractable roof and an air management system built into it, the rest of the courts haven't.

Up here in Gods county, currently 21C, and it's looking to stay that way for the rest of the week; I can live with that.

I didn't know that but then again, not bovvered by tennis at all.  Or Formula 1.

In nationalist HU, its at least 30C.  My bike computer says it.  Too hot for cycling really.  I'm wonder about the sense of cycling on any of these hot days.  We're not even taking the dog walking so why take the risk myself.  Mrs F says I should get up early, like 0730h, and do it while it's only 25C.

We'll be in the lake again this arvo, maybe 16h, this time we might be able to paddleboard as the wind has dropped considerably.

Can go cycling in the wooded area we have, nice and shaded.

15C and it's just stopped raining, so it's overcast atm, but brightening up; forecasting a high later today of 20C with broken clouds.  Humidity is up at the moment; we're not far off from the dew point, could do with a bit of wind right now.

fluffy2560

Over here at Lake Balaton, it's about 25C now and very sunny. We'll be up to 31C today. UV must be off the charts.

Almost no wind so paddleboarders should be OK. I was out with the board yesterday but it didn't have enough air it. Needs to be pumped up so the compressor will need to be fired up.  Making it stiffer will increase enjoyment and possibilities 😉

Update 15.15h: Others have gone to the beach. I'm not going until much later. It's too darn hot.

The average electric bill in the US for a standard size home is around $350. per month in summer, Hawaii is more, they do not have a power station, they use oil for their source of electric power.
Better to jump in the lake as the saying goes . - @Marilyn Tassy

That's a lot of money for electricity per month.  Our bill is about $150 and I feel we are being ripped off here.  Mrs F and I are wondering if we should look at solar panels again for our house.  It'd probably cost $10K+ equivalent to put up enough panels to run airco cum heat pump directly from solar generated electricity.  Return period, between 7 and 11 years by my scribbled estimates.

And I reckon we'd only have solar for 8 hours a day because of the way the house is oriented.   It'd be a mixed bag as the sun went around from sunrise to sunset.  Overall, we'd win during the summer but be very reduced capacity during the winter.  It'd have to be taken into account.

We'd have to weigh up if we like electricity (say, 5kW) or "large" water storage (5000L).

BTW, there's one island in the Hawaiian chain which is heavily solar powered.  It's not a large system but it's got a huge battery system to keep it operating at night.    I remember reading about it and looking at pictures but I don't remember the name.  It had a LOT of solar panels.

Anyhoo, today will be very hot, up to 36C.  Yesterday, down here at the lake,  I couldn't take it any more and didn't go to the water. I put myself in a dark room with the fan blasting me and chatted on WhatsApp with my relatives for a specific reason that caused a massive uptick in traffic.

My younger bro got married after 23 years of being shacked up with his now Mrs.  About blinking time - he was the last one.  They don't have kids so  I guess it means our dogs and cats are now official cousins.

Meanwhile, Mrs F and the kids went off to swim but they went at the hottest time of the day.   Crazy.  I'm supposedly cycling tomorrow but I am not sure it's a safe and sensible thing to do unless I go extremely early.

Today, Mrs F has gone off very early.  That's to a funeral for someone she only vaguely and recently knew - FIL of Mrs F's brother.   The deceased was being cremated.   Of course, the "joke" is they only needed to leave him out in the sun and he'd spontaneously combust given the high temperatures.

It's 38°C today, and I was in the garden at 6 am just to get some jobs done. I've made the mistake of leaving them before, and they just mount up. The grass is turning yellow in places.  We are expecting a thunderstorm soon, so I won't bother watering the lawn. It will need too much watering.

Our grass looks burnt.  It's amazing how strong the weeds are in a drought but the grass itself is brown and parched.

We're not watering it either.  It's rubbish anyway and needs turfing.  Before we came down here to the lake, we emptied our pop up pool into the garden to give everything a total soaking.

I'm hiding again today as we're past 35C in the sun.  I've got my laptop out which shows I'm unlikely to go anywhere.  I might go for a swim with the kids. It's the only way to cool down but we'll wait until 16h.  Worst time of the day.

SimCityAT

Its strange how the weather can change so quickly, we had our thunderstorm and a bit of rain. I would have liked a lot more, a good soaking, but more rain is forecasted for the next few days, so I can live with that. expecting it to be 29°C tomorrow.

Marilyn Tassy

We went to the lake yesterday too, lake Velence at their strand.

Hardly anyone there, it was nice and peaceful. Did not feel like sitting all the way to Balaton.

Silly us we know what express train to take but they had some issues with trains and we assumed the train was ours but it was headed to Balaton.

Thankfully we got off in Szekesfervar and went back to the strand.

Good thing too, as we approached the station, the first stop on the line from Budapest, the smoke was all over, something was wrong with that train and they had people running back and forth trying to fix it.

We got on our train back to the lake and noticed they had everyone get off the damaged train; What a terrible way to start their day, waiting for another train to show up, tons of people with suitcases all on the platform waiting around;

Smart move to go back to Velence. In fact it seemed like another train had issues too, the older trains.

It was only after 9 am too, track were overheated already;

Suppose to rain today but I do not see any signs of that.

22C today with a forecast for a bit of rain later this evening.  Forecasting temps will be around this until the end of next week, when we are expecting our next heatwave, with a high of 29C at the weekend, that's followed almost straight away by a week of rain with temps falling off at the end of the following week.

End of the month we're off to Holland to see the family; just checked the long range forecast for Enschede and this link sums it up perfectly; word of warning, if you speak Dutch and are easily offended, don't follow the link.
