News of the week: Canal + Maurice won't be showing the World Cup games

Canal + Mauritius will not broadcast any of the 2022 World Cup games, which starts in Qatar this Sunday, November 20. Unfortunately, Canal+ International no agreement was reached between New World TV, the purchaser of the broadcasting rights for the sub-Saharan region for the games.

As for the local channel, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) will be showing 28 games on the different channels. To watch all 64 games of this competition, you will have to turn to the mobile application MBC Play and pay Rs 210.

Another alternative is to turn to Mauritius Telecom, which offers the matches through the Showmax Pro and Showmax Pro Mobile services. These games will, furthermore, be commented on in English. Showmax Pro is only available to my.t home subscribers, while Showmax Pro Mobile is available on smartphones without a my.t home subscription. This version costs Rs 625 per month. 

Hunger strike: an educator protests against high fuel prices

He is demanding lowered fuel prices. Nishal Joyram, a 44-year-old educator, has been on hunger strike since the beginning of the week and does not intend to give up. After spending his first night on the sidewalks, he obtained permission to camp out in the courtyard of the St. Louis Cathedral in Port Louis. According to him, the fuel prices are excessively high in Mauritius.

Moreover, the government has collected Rs 10 billion in taxes on fuel prices over the past four years. Since the beginning of this year consumers have been hit by four successive increases in the price of petroleum products in the months of February, April, May, and July the price of gasoline gradually increasing from Rs 61.30 per liter to 74.10 per liter.

Health: shortage of paracetamol, antibiotics and cough syrup

Other essential medication missing from the shelves: paracetamol, antibiotics, cough syrup or sore throat, drugs against respiratory infections… This is a critical situation, especially since cases of flu and respiratory infections have been on the rise for over a month in Mauritius. 

The pharmacies are also faced with a high demand for drugs to treat these diseases. The authorities say new shipments of medicines are expected in the coming weeks.

Consumption: new rise in some basic products

Pasta, meat, butter, cookies... Groceries will become even more expensive in the coming days. Regarding pasta, it is the Barilla brand that is concerned. 500g of macaroni will cost Rs74. It will cost Rs 64.65 for a pack of spaghettoni; Rs 63.30 for a box of spaghetti; Rs 72.50 for a box of farfalle; Rs 99 for lasagne and Rs 73.45 for Whole Wheat pasta.

The price of Twin Cows brand butter is also on the rise. For example, a 200g box of Salted & Unsalted 60% will cost Rs 110..

As far as meat is concerned, those who consume the Premier brand will have to pay Rs 678 for a kilo of meat.

On the other hand, the price of Twin Cows brand milk will be reduced. The one kilo package will be reduced from Rs 280 to Rs 268.30. The 500g pack will cost Rs 134.15.
