Self-care is a buzzword but so much more than that. We all need some time to sit back, sit with our thoughts and feelings and take care of ourselves either emotionally or physically. So here are a few ideas for you in Mauritius.

Psychologists

Yes, self-care means taking care of your mental health as much as your physical health. So if you're feeling down, burnt out, unhappy, maybe even lonely as an expat in Mauritius, do consider asking for help from a psychology professional. There are also counsellors and coaches who can help you work through difficult times without diving too deep into the past.

Sports

It is an exciting time to live in Mauritius if you're a gym person. Indeed, while gym culture has only been around here for a few years, prices are becoming more and more competitive, the quality of equipment and classes offered are also better than ever. Moreover, wellness parks are also popping up to encourage you to get outside for a run, walk and other sports. The parks complete with outdoor gym equipment, play areas for children, yoga corners and calming water features. They are a great place to take some time for yourself and get that peaceful workout done!

Yoga and meditation areas

Over and above yoga classes offered in gym and sports clubs, there are also ashrams in Mauritius which allow you to go on spiritual journeys and retreats. Yoga and meditation are important components of Hinduism and are, therefore, present in Mauritius. Often, ashrams are free or ask for minimum contribution.

Other than ashrams, there are a lot of freelance yoga teachers who offer the authenticity and kindness you might not find in a mass gym class. These teachers often carry out their classes on the beach, in forests and other outdoor zen spaces.

Eating well

We all know that getting enough fruit and vegetables is important and Mauritius is teeming with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables and they are available everywhere- no excuses not to get your 5 a day! And with the introduction of health and wellness stores on the island, it's even easier to get everything you need to feel at your absolute best. With many well known and celebrated brands from all over the world you'll be sure to find just what you're looking for. Many major supermarkets are also introducing health and wellness aisles, dedicated to offering only organic, whole foods and drinks. So it's never been more accessible to look after yourself.
