Expat.com explores how cities on the African continent rank in this year's indice. In all, 39 factors from socio-cultural environment, to quality of schools and accommodation were taken into consideration.

Port-Louis is the capital city in Mauritius, a little island right in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Mauritius is a fast-developing country and its capital city, Port-Louis is the center of all its economic and administrative activities. The city is safe, it harbours a dynamic free-port area and the temperature is pleasant all year round. All of which places Port-Louis at the 83rd place of Mercer's indice, making it the African city with the best quality of life.

Second best city in Africa, Durban is ranked 88th on Mercer's ranking of cities with the best quality of life. Durban is home to the biggest sea port in South Africa. This harbour is also one of the world's most important commercial harbours. The city is the third biggest and most popular city after Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Cape Town, aka the Mother City, ranks 95th in Mercer's indice of cities according to the quality of life for expats and 3rd on the African continent. The more than affordable cost of living, the vivid socio-cultural climate and the warm climate probably all contribute to Cape Town's ranking at the 3rd best city for quality of life in Africa. However, safety concerns in the Mother City could have cost it its first place.

Johannesburg

The fourth best city for quality of life in Africa is Johannesburg which ranks just behind Cape Town, that is, at the 96th place in the overall ranking. Johannesburg, which was once just a small settlement, has quickly metamorphosed into one of the busiest cities in South Africa. A business and economic hub but also a city rich in culture.
