Parts and its functions:
The housing must include the parts with the following functions:
• A kitchen (the kitchen, the living room and the dining room can be in the same space);
• A living room (the living room, the dining room and the kitchen can be in the same space);
• A private WC installed in a room reserved for this purpose or in a bathroom or shower;
• A bathroom or shower;
• One or more bedrooms unless the unit is a "studio" or "flat".
o The number of bedrooms and their dimensions depend on the size of the family (based on the Household Composition).
o The bedroom (s) can not be the central piece of rooms in a row, nor be a blind room (= without window).
o Bedrooms must always be clearly separated from the living room and the space reserved for meal preparation unless the dwelling is a studio / flat
Number of bedrooms and their area:
- For a household consisting of 1 or 2 cohabiting adults (= without children) a "studio" or "flat" is accepted.
- For a household with children, the number of bedrooms and minimum areas are calculated according to the number of persons in the household and their age on the day of application (as reflected in the "Household Composition").
- From the age of 18, children are considered as adults.
- What is the minimum area for a bedroom? It depends on who occupies it.
- The minimum area is 6m².
1 child or 1 adult --> 1 room of at least 6 m²
2 children under 12, possibly of different sex --> 1 room of at least 9 m²
3 children under 12, possibly of different sex --> 1 room of at least 12m²
2 persons (2 children or 2 adults) of the same sex --> 1 room of at least 9 m²
The married couple or living together --> 1 room of at least 9 m²
- However, for one-person households with children (single-parent family), the adult person can sleep in the sleeping area in the living room.
- Note: a group accommodation is only accepted for a person of age or for a couple.
Total area of the living room and kitchen
- The combined areas of the living room and the kitchen, must reach the following dimensions according to the number of people composing the household:
• 1 or 2 people: 20 m² minimum
• Per additional person: 2 m² more for the following 5 persons
- From the 7th person: 1 m² per person more
Area of a flat
- The combined surfaces of the living room and the kitchen must reach 26 m² if the flat is inhabited by a person, 29 m² if it is inhabited by a couple.
Access to living space
- Access to all living quarters of the dwelling must be private unless the dwelling is collective.
