What to do with my car?

I am planning to go to Africa for about a year starting in August. I need suggestions on what to do with my car while I'm away. As most of you know, having a car almost a necessity when living in America, unless you live in the larger cities. Since I plan to return, I would like to keep it. Any ideas? Should I ask a friend to "babysit" the car while I'm away ~ occasionally drive it for me? Should I lease it out to a stranger? Or find a car storage place? Sell it? I'm still making car payments on it and do not have the title yet. Of course I also pay insurance every month. Any suggestions or advice? I'll take your two-cents worth...

Hey Angela,
As I have the experience of almost 20 years in the automobile industry and did manage lots of car logistic operations I would suggest you to:

Ask a friend or family to keep it in a dry garage
Batery must be disconnected
Hand break/parking break should not be used during long parking terms
Engine should run for 1 or 2 minutes every 2 weeks to maintain the fluids quality
Car should be moved for a few hundred meters every month to avoid breaksystem and tyre damages

If you are able to organize this care program, I think in one year you will find your car ready and fit to move on.

Thank you for this information. Very useful. It looks like if I go on my trip as planned, I'll need to find someone to babysit. ;-)

We leave our car in the States and return once or twice a year for a couple of weeks. When we leave we put the battery on a trickle charger rather then removing it and that seems to work just fine.

Hey!Welcome to Africa. Which part of Africa are you coming to?if it is Kenya or East Africa, you can email me on info@heelsandvalise.com or call +254729 079 046,then i can take u around,to our various parks.
About your car,how long will u be away?I think you can lease it to a company,a reputable one so that ,as you are away, your car is taken care of and it still earns you money. that way, when you come back, you dont have to start from way behind.

Hi Angela1207
Hi Chicita,

I would never deliver my car to strangers... you never know who and how they will use it. Some possible damages (engine/gearbox) only appear months later and you can easaly lose mutch more money in repairs.

But... it's only a personal oppinion and just another point of view.
