Hi!  I am an American woman who just moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a few months ago with my husband and son.  We do not live in a compound.  My husband is originally from here and wanted to move back here after 30 years in the states.  We met at the University of Arizona within a week after he arrived 30 years ago and have been together ever since.

I never imagined that moving here would ever be a possibility, so I had never given it much thought, although I felt that I would like to visit one day, but that didn't seem like a possibility either.  So moving to Arabia was, well, I guess somewhat of a surprise, although over the years I had learned a lot about the country and knew what to expect.  After Bush stole the presidency in 2000 and then 9/11 happened, my husband became disillusioned with what living in the US had always meant to him.  Attitudes toward Arabs became worse than before and he didn't feel welcome there anymore, even though he is a very likable guy and was very well respected among his colleagues and our friends.

So, here we are.  It is a very interesting place and I have been warmly welcomed into my husband's family.  So far, so good!
