Hi everyone,

I'm a new addition to the team. I've been in Indonesia for 2 years now - Jakarta to be specific - working for a multinational legal services crowd specialising in IP. This is my first expat posting (unless you count the seven years I spent in Australia - which I don't), but I have no plans to move anytime soon. Soon after getting here I fell in love with the place and look forward to spending a long time here.

Enough ramble!

Welcome Brett!

What do you like the most in Jakarta? Is is easy to settle down in Indonesia?

All the best for 2008 :)

Hey Julien

Sorry I missed your message. I work with an IP consultancy (effectively a law firm specialising in intellectual property). Jakarta is really easy to settle into. Javanese are very open and quite inquisitive, and you can very quickly make friends. Learning the local language (known as bahasa Indonesia) is not necessary, but makes a huge difference as it opens up your options in terms of travel, meeting people, etc. It's also VERY easy to learn basic conversational bahasa Indonesia.

Does that answer your question?

Brett :)

I missed the "what do you like best" question... That's a tough one. This is going to sound wierd, but I like the contrast. What I mean by this is that pretty much EVERYTHING is different to my own country (New Zealand)

- it's a predominantly muslim country
- most people are deeply religious
- there is massive poverty
- massive corruption
- doing business is different
- the food is different
- etc, etc.

Even things that seem the same, aren't. This can cause enormous frustration, but I enjoy it.

Julien

Thanks for all these answers Brett!
