First of all one must understand that there are two kinds of depression and just exactly what depression is.

The first type of depression is Situational Depression. As its name indicates it is brought on by some stressful situation such as the end of a relationship, loss of a loved one, etc. The greatest number of these cases do not require treatment of any kind and clear up on their own over time. If the depression lasts it is very important to seek treatment because the cure rate is almost 100 percent, so why suffer needlessly?

The second type of depression is Clinical Depression, it is an established, prolonged depression that can be permanent in nature or come and go several times. As its name suggests it is brought on by clinical (medical) causes and not just situations, so it must be treated medically. It is extremely important that you consult a physician if you have a prolonged period of depression since there may be an underlying organic cause that must be diagnosed and treated. Depression is a symptom, it is not the cause.

So, what is depression exactly? Well, simply put depression is nothing more than a chemical imbalance in the body which causes emotional responses, saddness, hopelessness, loss of self esteem or self image, etc. DEPRESSION IS NOT A MENTAL ILLNESS, it is a physical illness. It is the body reacting to the lack of certain chemicals nothing more, nothing less. Depression has a cure so it is important to seek medical help. Do not let yourself be fooled into thinking that there's something wrong with you, that you're crazy. NOT TRUE!

Treatment for both types of depression takes several forms. First there is drug therapy (anti-depressives). There are a vast number of different drugs. They don't all work the same way and they don't all work for every patient, so your doctor will need to try various different drugs (starting with the most commonly successful) until the right one for you is found. So, be patient - give the process time, Rome wasn't built in a day and you can't expect instant results. Secondly, the drug may not produce the desired results forever, so you need to monitor your moods and let your doctor know of any changes immediately. Over long periods of treatment medications may need to have their dose modified or one medication changed for another. Don't be surprised if this happens - it is quite common.

The next form of treatment is psychotherapy, which can be one-on-one sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist; or they can be group therapy sessions. While each have their supporters and detractors I believe they have each got their place. I personally think that in cases of Situational Depression the group therapy sessions have much better and quicker results, provided the person really opens up and participates in the sessions. It will not work for someone who resists and keeps quite. By participating in the group, sharing your own feelings and listening to others patients empathize more, start looking at the other group members' problems more than their own. They learn their own problems may be small by comparison and that they clearly are not alone in their suffering.

Three of the most important things you can do to fight depression are:

1. Do not isolate yourself. This is the most natural reaction to depression. You must force yourself to go out, do things, even if you don't want to. Staying in, locked away by yourself will only make matters worse.

2. Avoid situations that may have caused the depression. If you've broken up, for example, don't go to the same places, don't hang out with the same crowd, etc.

3. Take care of yourself and do fun things you enjoy. Keep busy, do things you like to do, maybe that you couldn't do before or didn't have time for. This will go a very long way to lifting you out of your depression and boosting self esteem.
