My wife and I are about 2 years from retirement.  I am 63 and my wife is 55.  We're wanting to retire in late 2013 or early 2014 and are just beginning to plan.
Our first choice is Langedoc Region in France with Panama as a second choice.
Our #1 concern is our budget.  Can we live and rent on $2500 per month?
What about health insurance?  I'll be 65/66 in good health.  I have VA in the states, but what do I do abroad that's affordable?  Same issue with my wife, albeit she'll be a bit younger than me.
How does one get started with their search, what questions should be asked?  Basically how do we begin to plan?

Can anyone who has bee there help us?

Dear Marty,
Congrats on your well earned retirment. I think the decision as to where to spend your entire years should not be fixed tillafter you have spent some months or years at that place.  Let it gradually dawn on you that you could spend the rest of your years at such a place.  Then too you must find something to keep you occupied. If you spent your entire life working, you will find the long holiday very boring.  So plan oncharity work, church work, teaching work or such like activities.  Then you must have a direct flight to the States.  So always keep an airticket with you.  Finally, try out some other places like Sri Lanka, Kenya and South Africa before deciding.

Best Wishes.

Hi. Why dont you try Mauritius. Many people have immigrated here. You can get houses as from minimum $700 to no limit. Reply if you want me to help.
