Why would anyone get married *IN* Morocco?

Hi all -

I have a question: Why would anyone get married *in* Morocco, if one of the parties is not Moroccan?

The process is a real rigmarole! Why go through such a convoluted procedure? Why jump through all those hoops? There is a police interview, a virginity check for brides (!), and other chauvinistic medieval nonsense.

Why do couples not simply get married overseas and subsequently simply *REGISTER* their marriage in Morocco? It is VASTLY sinpler! All you need is a notarised/apostilled marriage certificate (Morocco is a signatory to the Hague Convention and so is obliged to accept notarised/apostilled public documents from overseas), a translation thereof, a certificate of conversion to Islam (if the male was not previously Muslim/from a Muslim country), and that is it!

My wife (who is Moroccan) and I (I am British) did this and it was simple.

@Bill Shepherd, because your wife agreed with you about that. But most Moroccan girls don't accept getting married outside their country because they think you are hiding something.

Not all that simple to marry outside of morocco. Many moroccans have never left their country, and with the passport being weak, its not easy to travel for tourism purposes let alone marriage elsewhere. Plus moroccans value family; marrying abroad would (most likely) mean the family cannot attend

I have been through this hell hole originally proposed to get married in Gibraltar as its just a day’s process there but my wife’s family wasnt willing to as I am also a british citizen.

Bill Shepherd

@SafiHal898 But that is simply not true. Moroccans can travel to developed countries such as Malaysia without a visa. Kuala Lumpur is a great place to visit and to get married in, with 99.9% less hassle than in Morocco.

Bill Shepherd

@U M52 Why? 'Hide' what, exactly? You get married outside of Morocco - to save the headache of never-ending paperwork - then you *register* the marriage *in* Morocco. Nothing to 'hide', just 99.9% less hassle, no silly paperwork/stamps, and no medieval nonsense such as virginity checks! You also circumvent things that have *NOTHING* to do with the government. Who, after all, has ever heard of having to have a police interview (!) to get married.....?!??!?! Is it North Korea?

You still have to satisfy the legal requirements of the country where you get married, but you just avoid all the time-consuming, unnecessary - and frustrating - paper chase in Morocco!

Bill Shepherd

@muzzichuzzi Why weren't they 'willing'? (And what has it got to do with them?)

@Bill Shepherd Hi Bill, I am dating a girl from Morocco and I'm too planning to get her to my country in India, get married here, do the paper work and then go with her to Morocco for the registration. I've found one couple here who did this in my city Mumbai and he advised me the same. Because the amount of paper work I checked online to get married in Morocco is insane. I just hope I'm able to call her to India. Do you have any suggestions for me?

@Bill Shepherd

I think you're missing the point. Only the privileged have the means to travel. Agreed that the process is simpler else where (as a British woman who recently married my Moroccan husband in Marrakech) but many moroccans don't have the funds to fly out for a wedding, let alone take their family

Lisarzahn57

I know many privileged people in Morocco and they can't get out of Morocco!  Ugh

UmmYasmeen

Are you honestly asking why people would go through the hassle to get married surrounded by family and friends as opposed to in a foreign country where most, if not any, of their family wouldn't be able to attend??

I mean isn't the point of most weddings to share your joy with those you love? If not, you might as well just go to the courthouse (or whatever is the equivalent wherever you are). 😳
