Scooters & Motorcycles

Strawb

Evening all :)

I have a question. I bought a 125cc scooter, I have a standard UK drivers license which I'm told is fine, but to have a passenger on the back I would need a full bike license. Is this true? If so, anyone know how much it costs and where I could go about applying for the test etc?

And if so... can I then transfer that license to ride a 'proper' bike in the UK?....

If you have a UK motorbike licence then you should be able to ride any bike and have a passenger. You are not required to convert it to a Mauritian licence, but it is probably a good idea to do it.

If you just have a UK car licence, then strictly speaking, you shouldn't ride a bike in Mauritius. However, it is highly unlikely that this would ever be an issue if you got stopped by the police. I do do this and I flash my Uk licence and they wave me on. Most tourists also get away with this. However, if you have an accident, your insurance may be invalid.

If you have a UK car licence (but not a bike licence), you need to go to Port Louis Line Barracks and apply to convert your licence to a Mauritian licence. This takes a week or two.

You then have to wait six months until you can apply to get a provisional motorbike licence. This is a somewhat frustrating rule, but I am told is unavoidable. Once you have the provisional motorbike licence, you can then apply for your test. There is only one bike test here and then you can ride any  bike.

If you do have a UK motorbike licence, you can also convert this to a Mauritian bike licence (can be done at the same time as converting your driving licence).

i hv a valid driving license for passenger car & motorbike below 150cc in my home country.  I know that i can get an international driving license by converting my local car driving license, BUT can I convert the motorbike license too?

Why would you want to convert it?It should work just fine here.
