Search year permit expiry before single permit is approved

You need to request an Annex 49 from your local commune before your Search Year permit expires. That's the document that keeps you legal to stay and work while the single permit is being processed.

Without it, you'd technically lose work rights once the Search Year expires, even if you've already applied.

Check with your commune and make sure your employer knows about this step too. Good luck!

Bijlage 49 is only given to anyone with approved single permit and needs to wait for the physical card to be given.

Unfortunately, there is currently no procedure that grants provisional residence document once your orientation year expires during the processing of your single permit. So you have to act fast and inform your employer (the EU institution) to immediately process the single permit.

In practice (under orientation year), the moment you get the work permit part of the single permit before the expiry of your current residence permit, DVZ will provide Annex 46/47 (successful single permit)  to the commune where you are registered. That means, practically, you can stay in Belgium while waiting for the residence permit.

And also, if you have the work permit, you can continue your internship.

Luckily, the whole internship single permit process is also on fast track, like 90 days, just like single permit for researcher.
