Over the past few weeks, the country has witnessed an unusual spike in cases of the flu and respiratory infections. According to the Ministry of Health, there were more than 27,000 reported cases in September, a significant jump from the previous month's 5,593 cases. This atypical situation for this time of year can be attributed to various factors, including the impact of climate change on the weather.

Distinguishing between the flu and COVID-19
Differentiating between influenza and COVID-19 can be challenging because the symptoms of these two illnesses are quite similar. Both may present with common symptoms such as a runny nose, fever, sore throat, dry cough, and body aches. However, COVID-19 is characterized by a loss of the sense of smell, known as anosmia. To be on the safe side, it's advisable to get tested.
Symptoms of flu and respiratory infections can also overlap since both are caused by viruses affecting the respiratory tract. Shared symptoms include a high fever, dry cough, sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, fatigue, headache, body aches, and chills. Nonetheless, flu symptoms tend to appear suddenly and can be more severe than those of common respiratory infections like the common cold. Additionally, flu fevers are generally higher and can result in intense fatigue lasting several days.
Local remedies to combat illness and boost immunity
Mauritians have their own methods for dealing with and preventing illness. For instance, they commonly use saffron-infused hot milk and boiled ginger juice as remedies for coughs and sore throats.
If you're looking to strengthen your immune system, consider incorporating turmeric into your cooking. Turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, and one of its components, curcumin, plays a crucial role in regulating the immune system and enhancing antibody responses, aiding in the fight against infections.
In Mauritius, thyme infusion is a favored remedy for soothing cold and flu symptoms. The recipe is simple: steep thyme in hot water, add a spoonful of honey, and there you have it!
