The beaches of Le Morne and Mont-Choisy were recently chosen as one of the 10 favorite places in Africa among TripAdvisor travelers. While Mont Choisy and Le Morne are good choices, we offer you an insider's guide to the best beaches in Mauritius for travelers and expats.

Known for its beaches and blue lagoon, Mauritius is a dream destination for travelers from around the world. Among the many beaches of the island, two of them were recently ranked among the 10 favorite beaches in Africa according to TripAdvisor travelers: the beach of Mont-Choisy and the beach of Morne. The ranking was made by users as part of the Traveler's Choice 2023 award organized by the site. The winners were selected based on the quality and quantity of ratings and reviews left on Tripadvisor by travelers over a 12-month period.

Mont-Choisy

Located in the Pamplemousses district near Trou-aux-Biches and about half an hour from Port-Louis, Mont-Choisy beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Ranked as the 5th best beach in Africa, it stretches over 3 km of sand lined with filao trees, characteristic of mauritian beaches. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of the island because of its crystal clear and shallow waters, which makes it a favorite place for swimming and snorkeling.

Mont Choisy beach is also one of the most important water sports centers in the north of the island. There are many activities available, from glass-bottom boat tours to parasailing, kayaking and scuba diving. In addition, the Sailing Center of Mauritius regularly organizes half-day water sports activities including stand up paddle and windsurfing.

Le Morne

Ranked 7th by Trip Advisor, this beach is famous for its spectacular views of the Morne Brabant, an emblematic mountain of the island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the southwest, this beach is also known for its turquoise and shallow waters, which make it an ideal place for water sports such as diving, kitesurfing and stand-up paddling. It is one of the few beaches on the island where it is possible to see dolphins in their natural habitat, and regular outings are organized to observe them further offshore. These outings usually include a stop at Ile au Bénitiers where you can enjoy grilled meats in a heavenly setting.

The best beaches for swimming

Flic-en-Flac

Probably one of the most popular beaches on the island, this beach in the west of the island stretches over 8 km and offers a breathtaking view of the Indian Ocean. It is a favorite place for snorkeling enthusiasts with its reefs and underwater meadows.

Belle Mare

Belle Mare is 10 km long and it is the largest beach of the country. Thanks to its remote reef, the quiet waters of this beach are perfect for swimming, snorkeling and a variety of water activities for children and adults.

Blue Bay

This beach is home to one of the island's most beautiful marine reserves, housing a variety of protected marine species and offering visitors a unique experience of the local lagoon's wildlife. Indeed, the Blue Bay Marine Park has been a protected area since 1997, and is home to some 40 varieties of coral, a true aquatic paradise for no less than 72 different species of fish!

The most beautiful beaches

Bain Boeuf

In the distant past, the neighboring inhabitants used to bring their cows and oxen there to wash them... hence the name of the beach! Very picturesque, it is nestled between granite rocks, and is ideal for a family picnic. Located in the north, it offers a magnificent view of the Coin de Mire island.

La Cuvette

Relatively small, this peaceful beach, unknown to tourists, is located in a protected bay and is surrounded by palm trees. Located in Grand-Baie, it is ideal for a day of relaxation in the sun, as it remains fairly uncrowded, especially in the morning.

Gris Gris

Located in the south of the island, near the village of Souillac, this beach differs from other beaches on the island, with steep cliffs and often rough seas. Gris-Gris beach is an ideal place for peaceful walks and contemplation of the wilderness, offering spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and coastal landscapes. Although swimming is often discouraged due to strong currents, visitors can visit the Roche Qui Pleure, an iconic rock formation on the beach that offers a fascinating sight when the waves crash against it. With its peaceful atmosphere and spectacular natural beauty, Gris-Gris beach is a must-see destination for those looking to discover a different side of Mauritius.

Tamarin

Probably one of the most atypical beaches on the island: Tamarin beach. Located on the west coast of the island, it is known for its black volcanic sand and its breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain range. This beach is also known for its waves which attract the island's surfers. The conditions are particularly good between June and September, when the winds are favorable and the waves are bigger. However, even outside the surfing season, Tamarin Beach is a nice place to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset.  In addition, as in Le Morne, under the right conditions, it is also possible to see dolphins playing in the bay. Be careful when swimming though, as this beach is not protected by coral reefs!
