Another blow for the Mauritius destination. The United States has asked its citizens to avoid traveling to Mauritius. Also, Omicron variant cases are increasing.
Mauritius on the US red list
Mauritius has been placed in the highest category of the U.S. system of high risk countries of COVID-19. Indeed, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has placed Mauritius on its list of level 4 countries for COVID-19 risks. The United States strongly discourages its citizens from traveling to Mauritius. Those wishing to come to Mauritius must be completely vaccinated and must inform the State Department.
In addition, Saudi Arabia's national airline, Saudia, has suspended flights to Mauritius until the end of the year. At the end of November, it decided to cancel its flights until December 14 and then until December 20. Anyone booked on these flights should be able to get a refund.
Omicron variant: 14 people infected in Mauritius
The number of people who have contracted the Omicron variant is increasing in Mauritius. Last week the country recorded its first two cases and the authorities announced that twelve more passengers have tested positive for the variant. This follows a sequencing exercise on 15 samples of people who tested positive for COVID-19 from South Africa. The passengers are currently in quarantine and have not been in contact with the community.
Authorities also announced the detection of two cases of the Delta variant and the local variant B.1.1.318 in the 15 samples.
