Reopening of borders as from today 1st of October, Air Mauritius will not shut down and finally, less foreign workers in Mauritius.

D-1 before the reopening of the borders

After more than 18 months, Mauritius is reopening its borders. Heavily impacted by the effects of Covid-19, the tourism sector is hoping for the best. Vaccinated passengers will no longer have to comply with quarantine before being able to enjoy the island. The authorities have set the bar very high with the objective of welcoming 325,000 tourists until the end of 2021. While operators display some optimism, a third wave seems to be looming upon us. Especially since Mauritius has been facing a difficult sanitary situation for a few months.

Air Mauritius remains alive!

With the total reopening of the Mauritian borders, a decision was expected regarding the situation of Air Mauritius. The national aviation company, placed under voluntary administration since April 2020, will not close. The creditors voted in favor of the Deed of Company Arrangement (DOCA) proposed by the two directors, Sattar Hajee Abdoula and Arvindsingh Gokhool, thus avoiding the liquidation of Air Mauritius. For specialists, the national aviation company is important in the revival of the tourism sector in Mauritius.

Export sector: The number of foreign workers in decline

The export companies look grim. Faced with the pandemic, this sector has experienced a drop in employment of 15.5% between June 2020 and June 2021. Thus, there are 6,210 fewer jobs. The number of foreign workers fell by 3,866. Layoffs mainly took place in textile companies.
