Insurance coverage in Greece

Hello everyone,

Moving abroad requires adequate insurance coverage.

What type of insurance expatriates need the most in Greece: health, house or liability insurance? All of them? Do they come as a package?

Are there other insurance options to consider like critical illness, damage or property insurance?

Is it better to purchase insurance from an expat insurance specialist or from a local insurance provider?

And what about insurance costs?

Tell us about your experience in Greece.

Thanks!

Kenjee

People who cannot access the public health service would need to get themselves covered by an assurance company,General and Allianz are a couple that come to mind,my husbands place of work uses them for their employees,we have had need to use them and they are not a problem for paying up,they do require all the information from the clinic, hospital, doctor etc..stamped and signed. As far as I know not many Greeks have any cover for structural or contents of their homes, perhaps too expensive, and unfortunately many now are running around in their cars without insurance which is of course absolutely crazy.I know people who have been hit and the driver has just skipped off very fast in their car if its still driveable. Now with so little money about for the average citizen insurance would certainly be a no no.You need to shop around for your car insurance,we use a guy who is a broker,Greek,he works in car sales and at the same time is a broker for insurance,he hunts about for good prices,he also has some great part exchanged cars traded in for new ones here in Athens.I dont know any Greeks with life cover, some must have it but as I say things are so difficult now as the wages are so low.Our car is old so they will only give us the basic car cover, when the car was new we made a claim one time when a humungus truck started to go over the barrier railings of a bridge near Elefsina where my husband was waiting in the traffic below, all the railings came pounding down on top of our car, smashing the bonnet and top, luckily the driver was able to stop the thing before it came fully over onto the cars below,I think he must have fallen asleep,he jumped out and did a runner, stress. Our car had to be repaired not replaced and the work by the garage was not so good, the respray was naf, but we thank God that truck had only the front wheels hanging over.
