I've watched a couple of films lately, and I recommend them both.
- 1) Irena’s Vow
19 year old Irena Gut is promoted to housekeeper in the home of a highly respected Nazi officer in Poland when she finds out that the Jewish ghetto is about to be liquidated. Determined to help twelve Jewish workers, she decides to shelter them in the safest place she can think of – the basement of the German Major's house. Over the next eight months, Irena uses her wit, humour and immense courage to hide her friends as long as possible. (True Story).

- 2) Civil War
In the near future, a group of war journalists attempt to survive while reporting the truth as the United States stands on the brink of civil war.

I was thinking about going to the cinema to see Civil War. It's got mixed reviews though. I doubt the Fluffy family would want to see it.
I like sci-fi. There's a new film on Netflix called Atlas. It's got Jennifer Lopez in it. I always thought she was pretty good but that was ages ago. No idea if she's OK now.
I will have to wait until U tube plays these films.
Gave up Netflix and I am hard pressed to get my husband to the movies.
I do enjoy films like these.
Last night I happened to watch a Russian film on U tube with large easy to read subtitles.
An anti war film about a young teen boy in the Russian resistance.
Sad film too real for comfort.
Come and See is the title.
My fathers cousin was a 16 year old living in his village in SE Poland in 1939.
He was taken off the st. and forced to do farm work on a farm some German officer had taken over .As a non Jew he was not sent to the camps plus he was a good old country boy who knew how to work the land, valuable.
He said later that he witnessed Jews came and went all the time, sad stuff.
He got away after the war, found his village and family home burnt down, he moved to Australia.
Around the early 1980s the Red Cross contacted him, he mom was still alive.
He visited her just weeks before she passed away in Poland.

Quality of big films is going down these days.
But at least now anyone can make a movie using a smartphone. But can they write, direct or create quality? I am not so sure.
On the other hand, our 18 year old has written, directed and edited a short film (like 2 minutes) which was very much appreciated by her teachers as a quality item - it's called it Ephemeral about the transition of friendship and relations. Interesting choice of subject.
What amazes me is the quality of the vision and indeed the quality of the photography. All shot on a smartphone and edited using free software on her laptop. I think she could make art out of a yoghurt pot and a pencil.
Your Dad's cousin's story could easily be made into a movie. I can visualise it right now. Real life stories have a different resonance. Some of the stories are so outlandish you'd think they were made up. Truth is so much stranger than fiction!
Your girl sounds very talented.
My sister was that way, whatever she did was artful and smart.
She had allot of friends in the film industry, made me always wonder why she never got into it, expect for the one time she was in a movie....X rated!
I will NEVER share the title of that one!
That second cousin of mine who went through that forced labor stuff during the war had a daughter born in Australia.
She had planned on attending our fmaily reunion in Poland but her helath took a turn.
Too bad, would of been interesting to hear about her fathers story in more detail.
I read translated letters from another second cousin who was a teen girl during the war. Her family was moved into the city by force by the Germans.
They returned to their homes after the war. Also all burnt down.
\They were stubborn, did not go back to the safety of the city but camped on their land. Rebuilt slowly. I read how she mentioned they were like Gypsies eating on an open fire and sleeping under the stars while rebuilding their home.
She asked relations in the US to please send her any used dresses and winter coats. She asked them to sew in a $5.00 bill if they could afford it.
She had a dream of being a teacher. Did that, in fact she came later to the US and taught and married.
Tough people, not sure I am made of the same cloth!
We used to go to the movies here at least once a week but my husband got tired of loud talkers, popcorn chewers and people kicking the seat.

It might sound a bit silly, but I am in awe of my kids and their knowledge and skills. It's a beautiful thing to be youthful, optimistic and good at something. If I had half their talent, I'd be satisfied. But I'm their Dad so I would say things like that. I often remark to Mrs F that we made a "monster". I'm not being negative, I mean it's like having a bottle of champagne always on the verge of the cork exploding out releasing a fountain of creativity. If she manages to leverage her talent, she'll become famous. She seems "hungry" enough for it but I hope she doesn't get taken advantage of.
You've enhanced my vision of the movie about your relatives camping in the garden of their destroyed house. I can imagine a lot of this went on at Mrs F's grandfather's house. We've found Nazi coins and spent rifle shells in the garden. We keep saying we're going to use a metal detector there. Who knows what treasures are hidden there since WW2. Of course, in the movies, we can make stuff up
When we go to the movies, we go during the middle of the day - after lunch - to the English screenings at Allee. The kids are all in school and the only people there are tourists, retired people and those with a day off. Sometimes there's only been a handful in there. No seat kickers, talkers and popcorn chewers.
That is funny, my husband always says we created a monster too.
Our son is ,different.
Sometimes that is good and some times... God help us.
Just yesterday in fact my husband said he was very happy with the way our son physically turned out but his mind???
Of course the craziness if from my side...Yes, right!
We used to go to films during the afternoons too.
More though in the heart of the city where is is always busy.
I remember once the film said it was with subtitles but we do not know it was not English subtitles until it started. Longest 90 some mins ever!!
I used to sometimes see a film alone in Vegas while my husband played his video poker machine.
During the day there was never more then 6 people in huge theater, had those nice seats where you can push back and chill.
My cousins daughter in Vegas is working in the film industry, not exactly sure what she does .She has her onw U tube channel, a bit racy stuff at times.
My cousin is an average sized man , fit for his late 70s, his wife is super tiny and slim, fit too, they have a personal trainer they see 3 times a week plus he boxes for exercise. No one is allowed to box with him though, he is too old to take a hard hit.
Long story but their girl came out like a giant. Over 6 feet tall buxom, blonde and loud.
Like version of May West.
I took my shy DIL from Japan with me and my cousin to see her daughter sing in a gay nigh club in Vegas.
Crazy evening, we left before the real floor show started.
I never saw my shy Japanese DIL laughing so much before then.
She has a gig with a talent agency dealing poker in Vegas this week for the World Series of Poker.
I might have to check out if it is playing on the sports channel here in Hungary.
I am 100% sure they will zoom in on her dealing, she stands out so much.
No idea who my cuz and his wife turned out such a giant of a lady.
Obvisously my edit is still not working here.
Not sure if it is me or the site.

Our eldest is a tall as well. Which weird as we're average height. Bigger than us anyway. But no-one is tall so where that came from, who knows. But out of the 4 kids, so far two are looking tall, one is smaller and one is a work in progress but leapt up this past year or so. I reckon 4 inches in a year. And an appetite to match that growth spurt. Could be the largest yet!
I watched the Netflix movie Atlas with Jennifer Lopez. It was tacky - it's not a classic like The Godfather or Jaws. I felt like that was 2h I wouldn't get back. So the investment wasn't really a good return. As a result I'm not really in the mood for movies this week.
Meanwhile, I've been working through some TV shows: Star Trek Discovery, Dark Matter and Outer Range.
I'm running out of TV shows and need some recommendations. Currently I'm watching (or watched):
Beef (on Netflix) - about road rage - I don't like the female lead, might stop watching
Dark Matter - alternate universes - like the show but they are dribbling out the episodes too slowly.
Outlaws - British quirky comedy - just finished Season 3 and liked it.
Awaiting:
The Boys - superheroes go off the rails (14 June)
The Bear - restaurant problems - new season (28 June)
Star Wars - the Acolyte (5 June)
Umbrella Academy - superheroes (again) Season 4 - (9 August)
House of the Dragon - fantasy - Season 2 - (17 June)
Italian immigrant Francesca Cabrini arrives in 1889 New York City and is greeted by disease, crime, and impoverished children. Cabrini sets off on a daring mission to convince the hostile mayor to secure housing and healthcare for society's most vulnerable. With broken English and poor health, Cabrini uses her entrepreneurial mind to build an empire of hope unlike anything the world had ever seen.
The Night Agent on Netflix is good, 2nd season is coming later this year.

Was indeed a good show. Looking forward to Season 2.
Currently watching:
Ray Donovan - Irish-American gangsters in California, stellar cast and very violent (7 seasons)
And another one:
Presumed Innocent - Jake Gyllenhaal - lawyer is accused of something or other, probably murder.
Also saw:
Childhood's End - scifi movie about the end of days overseen by aliens - 3 part mini-series from 2015.
The Wire: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/
The Wire: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/-@atomheart
The Wire is a great show. The infamous F**k murder scene is something else.
Upcoming:
The Decameron - black death comedy set in Italy - available Netflix 25 July 2024
Snowpiercer - Season 4 (final) - after much delay (2 years) available 21 July 2024 (weekly episodes)
Time Bandits - TV show based on the movie, set to broadcast 24 July 2024 (weekly episodes)
Latest shows expected:
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder - Murder mysteries solved, Netflix, 1st August
Sunny - Japanese robot helps Rashida Jones (I like her!) solve a mystery, Apple TV, 10 July
Sausage Party: Foodtopia - comedy cartoon about a sausage and foody friends, Prime video, 11 July
Emperor of Ocean Park - murder mystery based, MGM+ 14 July
Time Bandits - series based on movie but no little people in it as per the original, Apple TV 14 July
Those About to Die - Gladiator series, Prime/Peacock around 18 July.
Lady in the Lake - Jackie Kennedy clone solves a murder mystery, Apple TV, 19 July (wonder if this covers Chappaquiddick?).
Am I the only one who's gotten so used to fast-fowarding through the dull parts of a movie that sitting in a theater where I can't do that is almost unthinkable now?

You're not the only one.
I am usually watching something on my laptop with multiple screens.
I just swap to one of the other screens and Google something.
@SimCityAT
I have seen clips from the civil war movie - seen no realism at all in those.
Even the Purge grabs in some scene more about possible outcome when society collapse and no rules left at all or someone who capable to enforce those.
As for Europe: I wish that a 3 books of Guerilla made into films, or even TV series.
So surreal and grabs the chaos perfectly.
Sadly no one translated to English, but books are in French, Hungarian, Polish.
Season 2 of Sci-Fy's The Ark started 17 July 2024.
Wobbly sets, wonky acting and dodgy special effects. Reminds me of Doctor Who's early days.
Still watchable.
It surprised me to find The Ark is made in Belgrade at PFI Studios (Pink Film). I didn't know Serbia had any kind of international film industry. Yugoslavia did - plenty of WW2 movies made there - but post break up, I thought it had all gone.

Oh, my first guess was they in the end made the prequel of "The100" series which was abadoned anno.
But by the trailer it is a very different series.

The 100 had an actual end and wasn't cancelled off the cuff like so many decent TV shows. The 100 pilot was truly awful but the actual real series was quite good although it started becoming like Mad Max or Vikings or one of those apocalyptic shows with Jason Mamoa in. In The 100, some characters were killed off unexpectedly which annoyed a lot of people.
The Ark is worth a look if you like Sci-Fi shows. I've always been a fan so will watch any Sci-Fi show but I am so disappointed by the new Doctor Who. It's so cringeworthy, I had to abandon it.
How about Foul Play, that old Goldie Hawn - Chevy Chase comedy which ends with them in a mad chase to find the albino before he assassinates the Pope.
They were so wrapped up in the chase though that they forgot that the best way to protect the Pope wasn't to find the albino but to simply get the Pope out of there.
@fluffy2560
Yes I know that The 100 was not canceled.
Even tought the last season was poor quality.
But there were plans to make the prequel TV series: about the space stations which later became the Ark when connected together, where all the normal series start before they do return to Earth.
That TV series plan was abadoned.

Yes, I think "The 100" kind of came to a natural conclusion. I liked the show and at least it kept going for a good number of seasons. You can often see how the writing declines over years.
I'm currently watching spin-off Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix. Last season - great cast, interesting stories, scenery and loads of action. Vikings the original was great too as was The Last Kingdom. Filmed very near to my village - we were on the set a couple of times while walking the dog. Also The Witcher is due back with recast lead. Netflix supported those shows for quite a few seasons so that was something good they did.
The Boys Season 4 is coming to an end this week. It's one of the most inventive shows for some years. The spin off Gen V will be coming back so that's a positive thing. The death of one of the best stars - Chance Perdomo - should be no block on filming. Hope not anyway.
Umbrella Academy returns in early August via Netflix for the last season - another innovative show.

Chevy Chase is supposed to be difficult to work with.
One of the best Goldie Hawn movies is Overboard, alongside Kurt Russell, her long term partner.
One of my all time fave movies, alongside Meet the Millers.
Overboard was a fun film.
Somehow lately I only like historical or reality documentaries.
Watched a few last night about Hiroshima.
So heartbreaking and cruel, about 22% of those killed or burnt were under age 14.
They had children in that age group working that summer in jobs like running the trams and working in the post offices. The adult men were fighting.
My sons old GF working at the memorial museum in Hiroshima for awhile as an English speaking translator before she came to uni in Las Vegas.
I would like to see the movie ,Oppenhimier but will wait until it is shown online.
Interesting side note, in beauty college it is proper to call all male instructors Mr. and all female instructors Miss . One of our instructors, a really sweet older lady who was also a nurse by day and beauty instructor by night was named, Miss Gay.
She once told us her older brother was the pilot of the Enola Gay and he named the plane after their mother.
Guess her big bro was Tibbets. She was super nice, hard to believe her brother was of a different cloth, he must of been a decent person too.
War can bring out the worst in anyone I suppose.
I've just started to watch this.......
Young Woman and the Sea tells the story of Gertrude Ederle, an American swimming champion, who first won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games. In 1926, Ederle became the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English Channel.
Lisa, an aspiring songwriter, whose farming family has suffered foreclosure is forced to work at a new, 'urban farm' where she meets Dalia. Her casual racism leads her to be fired but the women end up drawn into a passionate affair.

Was it any good?
The subject matter is such a massive turn off, I won't be putting it on my viewing list.
Unless you say otherwise!
@fluffy2560
It was excellent, worth watching. I learnt quite a bit on how much women were excluded from playing sports back then.

Hmmm...wider context, OK then, it could get on the maybe list. Cast looks good I must say.
I could see all sorts of jokes appearing linking up crossing the channel in an overloaded rubber boat vs swimming it.

I remember that saying about the death of one person is a tragedy and the death of thousands is a statistic.
I suppose Tibbets just thought it was going to bring the way to the end. It certainly did but the Japanese did not want to surrender even after the first bomb. Some of them wanted to fight on, even after the second. Makes you wonder about the level of their fanaticism. I understand it was the Emperor who finally pulled the plug.
Military does desensitise you to weapons and targets. They want it to be automatic.
If we look at Russia, if you believe the Reddit posts on places like Russia, they are prepared to sacrifice their child/husband/uncle/daughter/aunt/nephew whatever for a new washing machine, domestic appliances or Lada car.

Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out
Itsy is new in town and her life seems over until she meets her space-obsessed neighbor Calvin, who believes his parents were abducted by aliens. An aspiring journalist, Itsy decides to write an exposé on Calvin but ends up discovering much more.
Before Dawn
Inspired by the real-life diary entries of local ANZACs, the feature film details the untold story of some of Australia’s greatest military victories.
After a long hiatus, I've just started Gomorra (Italian mafia show) Season 5.
Huge hit series - 5 seasons total.
it's in Italian but can be watched with English subtitles.
