A rental allows you the freedom to choose your own routes, explore less travelled roads and set your own timetable. Whether you wish to visit the city of Port-Louis, explore the coastal areas or venture into our forests and on mountain tracks, your best bet is having a vehicle. Driving in a foreign country can be a challenge, especially when you are not familiar with the local culture and road habits. With this simple guide to choosing the right vehicle for your travels across the island and the do's and don'ts of driving in Mauritius, we hope to assuage your fears and help you make the most of your holidays on our beautiful corner of the world.

Driving License

Tourists are legally permitted to operate a vehicle on the island, if they possess a valid driving license in their country of origin. However, we drive on the left side of the road in Mauritius. Unless you come from South Africa, India or the UK, this may take some getting used to. So, take your time to adjust and drive slowly.

Choosing the right vehicle

With that in mind, it is now time to choose your mode of transport. It is possible to rent a variety of cars here in Mauritius from the many rental companies in operation. Your choice of vehicle should depend on what you would like to do and see while on the island. For instance, if you are more interested in exploring the city of Port-Louis or to go on a food tour of the towns, a smaller vehicle such as a Nissan Micra is advisable. Parking, getting in and out of narrow roads and navigating in general will be much easier than if you were to rent a pick-up. The same goes for coastal trips. We have a good infrastructure here on the island, and almost all our beaches and seaside are connected by (generally) well-maintained roads. So don't be afraid to drive in your Nissan Micra for a swim at Pereybere, one of the most beautiful beaches in the north or try some kitesurfing on the south side at Le Morne. If you want to do some more heavy off-roading, you would be better off pricewise with a 2x4, since the island is relatively flat. You can have a vehicle overview on our website on https://www.abc-carrental.com/our-fleet.html.

Dealing with Law Enforcement

It is highly likely that you will be stopped by traffic control at some point, especially if you are driving in heavily trafficked areas or in popular locations at night. These are routine controls, and the police officers just want to ensure that drivers are not inebriated (Do not, under ANY circumstances, drive under the influence of alcohol) and are in possession of valid licenses. If you feel safe, you can stop your vehicle on the side of the road, wait for the officer to come to your car and follow instructions. Our officers will usually accommodate you and try to either speak English or French. Just present your passport and driving license and undergo alcohol testing if required. On the other hand, if you are driving in an isolated area at night and do not feel safe stopping, just keep on driving to the nearest police station. Google map is your best friend in this case. Report yourself to the officer on duty there and present your documents. You will not be penalized for not stopping.

Refueling

When going to a gas or fuel station, you are not required to step out of your vehicle. You can just park your car next to a machine and wait for an employee to approach you. You just have to state the amount of your purchase, open the fuel tank and wait for the employee to refill your car. You then pay, exchange pleasantries, and go on your way. MUR 1000 should get you anywhere on the island, but to be safe, it might be better to get a full tank of gas during the day, as most gas stations close around 8pm except for Engen Petroleum, next to Bagatelle Mall, which is open 24/7.

Parking and Parking Zones

Parking at public beaches, shopping malls and restaurants are usually free of charge and there is no time limit. So, feel free to spend as long as you want soaking up that beach sun, shopping or sampling our local cuisine. However, in towns and in Port-Louis, you will be required to display a paid parking coupon in certain zones. These parking spaces are usually found on the side of the streets and are indicated by street signs. Here, you are only allowed a maximum of 2 hours during normal working hours, after which you are required to leave the parking zone. The paid parking coupons, which you can either purchase in certain locations, or could be provided with your rental, must be properly filled in with the time and date and displayed on your dashboard. In case of doubt, just check with a fellow driver or any passer-by that you have the correct coupon.
