Hi All
Looking to make the jump to DR within the next few months.  Looking to start a boutique eco-tourism business as well.

MAKEIT

Hi Leggoeggo, what area are you thinking about?

LadyFers

Hi There leggoeggo. What type of boutique will you start there?

leggoeggo

Hi, thank you for response.  Looking to run tours on horseback on select beaches.  Small groups, inclusive of picnic etc

leggoeggo

What do you guys do in DR?  Are you there already?

Bob K

Welcome and I need to ask a few questions....sorry reality based
1.  Have you been here before???
2.   Do you have your residency and cedula (you need a cedula to work here legally).
3.  Are you fluent in Spanish
4.  Have you checked the need for horses on the beach?
5.  Do you have the proper papers ready to file to start a business here
6.  Have you done your research.

The DR is not for everyone and most "gringo" business fail.

Sorry I left my rose colored glasses in the closet this morning :D

Hi Leggoeggo,

I am living in the DR already. I work in real estate industry.

MAKEIT

Hi Bob K,

Those are valid questions!!!! It is important that individuals are realistic about the offerings in the DR.... it is an open market but not everything is going to work... Proper channels need to be followed in order to get any business/ideas off the ground....

Bob K

Thanks I know of too many folks how jump before looking and end up flat on their faces over the last 11 years that I have been living (and working some) here.

1.  Have you been here before???  Many times
2.   Do you have your residency and cedula (you need a cedula to work here legally). Attorneys are handling this
3.  Are you fluent in Spanish - Yes
4.  Have you checked the need for horses on the beach? - Yes, however the horses will not be living on the beach
5.  Do you have the proper papers ready to file to start a business here - In the works
6.  Have you done your research. - Yes

MAKEIT

Yes, I have witnessed it as well. I continue to try different outlets until something sticks. That is the one piece of advice I give to everyone "you have to find your niche-- it is a process".... I lived in Bavaro for almost a year before I started to cut ties with things back home (just in case)... I have been able to make it here in the DR because I do not require much... Necessities (phone, internet, cable, RICE, water) I AM AMERICAN 😁.... my only weakness is that I enjoy going out to dinner at least 2x a week-- this gets expensive depending on the restaurant of choice!!!

MAKEIT

Leggoeggo, you are already ahead of the game. Go for it!!! It is a good thing you have a plan, no one knows what tomorrow will bring WE ARE ALL ROLLING WITH THE PUNCHES!!!🤠... let me know when you are in the area maybe we can get coffee!!!

Bob K

Wow I am impressed. You seem to have it under control...  Good job!!!

Good luck!!

Well....I have things in motion....BUT....I recognize there is so much that I don't know and will only be able  to figure out once I'm there for longer duration.  The measure of what I "know" is only on paper and not in experience....and I recognize the difference  :)

.....and there's pretty much nothing in my life that I've ever had control over  :o

Hi..I just thought I'd chime in😄, I agree with you.... if you have a plan you are ahead of the game!!. These days with this economy and all the crazy politics going on we all have to have a "plan B" I to want to move to Punta Cana in the next couple years and want to start mine and my husbands residence soon. We had a condo  and sold last year but still plan to purchase something soon a little less of a walk to the beach in PC.
Our plan changed a few times but it still remains .....we want to move to DR and give it a try, we love hot weather (We live in FL now the hotter the better! I lived in NY for 40 years and hate cool, cold and freezing weather). We live pretty simple and as long as we have a nice place to come home to, phone, internet some nice casual restaurants, bars and beaches nearby and a international airport to get home quick when needed (once a year) we will be happy....home for me is where my husband and cats are, we have built 14 homes and moved countless times. I figure we only live once and if we really don't like it in the DR well then we will have a new plan and goal...."making plans to move back" its all about the journey! 😄...I don't think that will be the case though, were ready for change.
Your biggest regret may be that you never tried.. Good luck to both Makeit and Leggoeggo!🌴🌞

Leggo you are way ahead of most, good for you!!!!  It is not easy to open and do business here. As a consultant I have seen some awesome successes and too many failures.  Usually it comes down to  bad choices and lack of preparation.

Now I have heard a rumor that horses are being banned from beaches - including for tourism. Please make sure your lawyer looks into that.

leggoeggo

Thank you guys so much for the heads ups, we will be joining with a company that's currently operating so essentially we will be a business unit of the existing company.  We will certainly look into the beach issue.  The contracts that we have currently have are with private beaches, so I pray that the changes in legislation don't also affect private beaches but thank you so much for telling me!!!  I love these forums they are incredibly insightful!

Glad to help when we can!
