Welcome to the forum!
Best location depends on personal prefernces - do you want sea views/nightlife/rural/etc etc - let us know if you have specific requirementents and maybe people can be more helpful.

Sorry - I have as much idea about the Diamond business as Naomi Campbell!

Hi,

The only place I know of is :

diamondsinternational.com.mt

Generally speaking, if you hold a South African passport you will either have to have a company apply for a work permit for you or you can start your own business here in Malta. That means investing a certain amount of money in your business . Probably 100.000 € as a minimum. Otherwise you will not be able to get a residence permit and not be allowed to stay.

With your expertise in the diamond business it should not be too difficult but it will probably mean getting the right legal advice.

I'm sure you will get more info from other regulars on this blog.

Ricky

hi thanks for your replies i do have an eu passport so this is not a problem . i would like to live on the sea front were all the expatsare and all the bars nightlife etc . wich places are the best ??

ricky

Hi,

Then you should look at the Gzira/Sliema/St.Julians area. This is definitly the area with many Expats, bars and nightlife the whole year and with a very central location for getting around the island.

Try renting furnished for a few months and then deciding on long term.

If you need a real estate agent I can give you some contacts.

I was faced with the same dilema a few months back, and now I've settled here, as I am working for Microsoft Malta.

I think the advise below is sound, however I would urge you to look at the bigger picture. Malta (during summer periods) gets very rowdy, and if you live on the seafront in Sliema I can tell you that you better be a heavy sleeper or ensure your sound insulation is very good. Revellers stay up all night and it can be a pain sometimes hearing it. Compared to where I lived before (In Australia) renting here from a pricing perspective is not that bad, and you can get great views for a decent rate. The person below who advised that you rent and check it out for yourself is probably giving you the best advice, because the choice is very personal. For me, I found a beautiful penthouse overlooking the sea way up North in the village of Mellieha, which most Maltese will tell you is far (by their standards) - and around the corner for ours :-). Thing with Mellieha is during the Winter time it is very very quiet so probably not for you.

In a nutshell, Sliemma, St Julians (middle North) or ...Paceville if you want to be next to the nightlife and can sleep through an Earthquake; Beautiful views of the sea, quiet and large open spaces in the Mellieha area (Summer in Mellieha can get a little rowdy too but nowhere near Sliema).

If you are extremely rich and can afford (And can find) a place that has huge historical significance, and surrounded by your own personal fortification you can try Mdina (good luck);

Anything south is well ... I guess you just have to see for yourself :-) Good luck with your move!

The south, explain? I love it...its where the real people live! Marsascala is a wonderful place to live.

OOOOPS!

For me Sliema is the best place to live for active businessman. It is real centre of Malta.

thanks to all of you for the info so far !!! wow after reading all the questions and answers i am glad i have an e u passport seems like its worth its weight in gold esspecially if like me you are living in disney land !!! whats the price of cars and scooters there guys ??? and thanks for the diamond contacts i will follow up on it .

iamharibo

Hey, goodluck with your move :)

Cars and scooters are really reasonable over here but the roads are pretty dangerous. I read there's something like an average of 4 cars per family and the roads are jam packed a lot of the time.

If you are looking around St Julians/Sliema/Gzira I have a list of estate agents worth trying. I've used all of them and the best I found was Bel Air. Have a look at the list anyway and there's a review of them on my blog if you go to the home page and select the category renting info :)

I think you must be confusing Malta with another country...

jrchopper1

can you give me an idea of prices here in cape town i drive a mercedes clk 500 and i am thinking of bringing it with me is that a wise idea ?? thanks

georgeingozo

is that a 5 litre engine ? In which case the import tax will make your nose bleed - it will be thousands if not 10s of thousands in tax, and then a very high annual road tax based on emissions ( possibly over 1,000 a year)

I'll PM you some links

vicamilleri

Just wrote an article for property site about Malta property. I hope it will help you with information. There are a lot of useful links and pictures in it.
There is a button in the right corner to translate to English.
(moderated: no ads please)

ricky

Hi,

This link would help a lot more if the reference site was written in decent English. The 'translation' button delivers  a whole lot of 'crap' and I don't think many here are into Russian.

Are you just looking for free promotion ? If so please post under Classifieds!

I got some semi-readable English maybe the browser makes a difference? E.g.:

"If you like to enjoy the sea view from the window above, then you in Mellieha. A stunning view of the Bay Mellieha Bay will be provided. You, of course, nothing prevents down and prisodinitsya a coterie on the largest sandy beach of Malta or go for a sea trip on your own yacht. It should be borne in mind that the location of settlements on the hill creates space for all possible winds that winter in Malta, a paradise not appear."

But still, hard-work to read/understand...maybe worth it?

Tim

It is a pity, if this did not help you. But I do not have time and I do not need to make English version.
An only thing you can do for sure - to have a look at the pictures. They are the same at any languages. :)
