Commune Registration as Non EU after 3 months

Hi All,

I have arrived in Brussels over 3 months ago and have been trying to register in the commune.

I have not had success as the appointments are 1-2 months away each time, and the first time I went to they were not able to register me, because apparently the police came to verify my address but could not find me.

Now the police verification has been requested by commune to the police again, but it has been over 3 months since my arrival and next appointment isnt available for another 2 months?!

im very worried as this will make it 5 months in total without registration. Can someone advise if this will cause trouble?

Hey,

try to look up the responsible police man for your street/area and try to call him and tell him your situation that you are here for a few months now and need the police to come and verify your address.

Go to https://www.politie.be/nl/ and put in your area code to find local police contact of your area.

This may speed up the process of verification and later, it would be ok for you to go apply on the next available appointment.

I have actually been to the police station in person 3 times over the last couple of weeks, the officer in charge of my street never seems to be there - the other officers told me they would tell her and give her my number but still no luck with it.

My next appointment is in exactly 1 month and I think by that time the police will verify, but my worry is that this is over 4 months in total that I will not have been registered and I read that the limit is 3 months, so I am worried that they will refuse me?

When does your visa expire?

We had a similar situation when we were not sure whether we will be able to do the registration within 3 months. I called the immigration office for foreigners in Brussells and they told me that the 3 month rule means you may have trouble at the border if you travel outside Belgium. But if you are not travelling, you are okay as long as your visa does not expire before you are able to fully complete the registration.

I would also try emailing the municipality and explaining your situation. Our local municipality has cancellations all the time (and people do not know about them!). So if you get on the good side of the municipal worker in charge of registrations, they can email you when there is a cancelation and you can come to the appointment much sooner that 1 month.

@tatyanaj thanks a lot for the useful information - I will email the commune and ask regarding travel as that is also a concern.

my visa D is valid for 1 year, but I would indeed like to travel outside EU next week for the holidays. As you mentioned I’m afraid of trouble at the border due to the 3 months rule. I did ask at commune last week if I can travel in this case and the person said “for 2 weeks only” but to be honest I didnt fully trust the answer as I have not heard of this before
