The best age to move to the Philippines

Cheryl

Hello everybody,

No two people experience expatriation in the Philippines in the same way, depending on their age and personal situation. We would like to know more about you and ask you to share with us when you decided to move to the Philippines.

How old were you when you moved to the Philippines? Did you go alone or with your family?

In your opinion, was it the right time to move there?

Do you find this country welcoming for your age group or for certain categories in particular? Why or why not?

Are there any incentives (financial aid, lower taxes, etc.) and for which category of expats?

In your opinion, is there an ideal age to move to the Philippines?

Thank you for your contribution!

Cheryl,

I have been in Philippines 16yrs but I still have my job in uk I work there 6 months then go back to my house and family in mindanao for 6 months been doing that since I was 48

Wellsfry

My first time traveling to Phil, I was 50, now 54, and arrived the day Phil opened(for tourists).  I was alone the first time. My first trip I stayed in Manila...  but definitely not for me... I am more a province guy, or small town guy... I met a beautiful sweet amazing filipina, and game over for me... very happy.

For me it was the right time... I am financially good, and grew quickly to love phil..Phil... it is for sure not for everyone.  I now have a fiancee here. The last 2 weeks we spent moving from Ipil where we had an apartment,.to Dipolog... we will be married in the next couple years, and then purchase a beach lot, and build a little place to hang the hats.  I will still Travel to u.s. every couple months to visit my sons, and check my business numbers,  but plan most my time to be here.

Welcoming... yes... mostly.  Most are friendly and eager to try and speak English with me.  Many stare, but that does not bother me at all... understandable.

There is no ideal age to move to another country... it is a strictly personal decision, and age is dependent on capability to sustain.

Incentives... yes and no... (fresh)foods and housing costs much less... many other things same or even higher.  Opportunity to make money is very high... we plan to build apartments.  Labor is extremely cheap. Materials not so much.

My wife and I have four kids, but my job as International Consultant kept me around the globe most of my life, now we have grandchildren, four in the US (boys) and two adorable girls here in the Philippines, so when I retired we decided to move close to our granddaughters. We moved in last September and plan to be here most of the time with occasional visits to our kids in the US and Spain.
The right time to move? I am 70 and my wife is 64, life is ok here, as well as any other places we have our kids and grandkids.

Poebhoy

SRRV starts at 50 so 50.    Looking to initially base in Metro Manila,  perhaps Caloocan so I can still be in the Metro but close to places like Angeles and Subic while I navigate where I'll eventually settle.

I've done research and rent of a studio in Caloocan is, well, I can afford it let's just say.

Best of luck to us all.

:):top:

Sure there can be some good women there too*, BUT I am sure such places have much higher percentage of golddiggers by money is magnet for them...
Of course there are other women than bar girls in Angeles  BUT when there is a big part of such in a city, then big risk others there get "infected" by gold digger culture too...

*Many years ago  I had short contact with a good bar girl, it was obvious she didnt suit to be that by how depessed she was by it   :sosad:  She complained to me almost no good men contact her, but I pointed out to her it wasnt odd by how she looked by make up and clothes  :)  We had that contact when she was home at where she came from, but we lost contact when she went back to Angeles.

Poebhoy

There's a saying in the Philippines you can take the girl out the bar but you can't  take the bat out the girl

manwonder

Moved here in Feb'2019 (just b4 i turned 55) with an intention to stay for about a year before heading back home.
Then the Covid pandemic hit so I decided to postpone all my travel plans till hopefully early this year....then out of the blue the super typhoon Odette hit us hard on 16th Dec'2021 (yup we lived about 1 month without a complete roof over our heads & having to face the elements). I'm sure glad I had decided to stay here just to be around to take care of family/kids & our emergency home rebuild...no where else would I rather be right now....We'll maybe just maybe a flight out in April or May'2022 iagw...fingers crossed.

Cant you do the working with video calls from the Philippines, so you dont need to worl so hard by not needing double places to live?   :)

A friend of mine stress very much when working, so he HAS TO take long vacations 3 - 4 times per year. All his work can be done can be done by internet, so I said to him many years ago, why dont he move to the Philippines permanently - but he go on stressing so hard so he has to take long vacations

On top of that he said when he started working with analyzing companies at the stock market 35 years ago he will retire when he reach 5 million. I reminded him of that 2 years ago and asked if he hadnt reached that.
The he laughted and said he had over 10 million -   but he go on stressing so hard so he has to take long vacations

On top of that he work so extreemly ineffective by he bother about small not  important details, which make him so stressed o he has to take long vacations

((Once back when I worked (more than) full time with other things while he had such work as his only occupation, we agreed at a Sunday both would check same company to judge if their shares were worth buying for 10. I hadnt time to start until Wednesday.  Wednesday before noon I called him after I had checked the important things:
-They are worth 18.
-What?! What?!  What?!  How can you know that allready???!!!
He had started working full time with it Monday morning and was far from done.
Friday afternoon he called me.
-No they arent worth 18, they are worth 18,30.
    The question was only if they were worth buying for 10. Much can happen before its time to sell, so he had spend wasted almost a week at what I got done in 2-3 hours...  And he get stressed because he get short of time..      I have tried since 35 years to teach him how to work effective, but I have given up.
I have (almost) given up too to teach him psychological effects at the stock market, although after 30+ years he understand that a tiny bit now   :)
Many years ago he called me and told - including a lot of unnecesary details  :)   - very exited he had found a bargain and bought a lot.
A few DAYS later he called me about same:
-People are stupid, he said very frustrated.  They dont understand these shares are worth much more.
-But if they would understand, then we couldnt make such bargains  hahaha....
(Some MONTHS later the quarter report did show improved result. THEN the market understood by some look only at the result line.  We look at other things, thats why we can find bargains before the price go up.
Nowadays is the market even more stupid by a huge part of investors ONLY look at TA  (=just looking at price movements and volume) NOT doing FA valuing the company the shares are shares of!!!   By so many do the same TA stupidity, they get SAME buy and sell signals becoming even more as sheeps not thinking only following the masses, which often MAKE big overreactions both up and down.        (Btw I know how such TA signals functions, so in some smaller companies I can MAKE such buy or sell TA signals if I want to by just buy or sell some of such share.  But its illegal (in Sweden) so its a question  if I ever have used that knowledge    :)

Now are almost all shares in "western" companies much overvalued anyway. last I looked the average earning in "western" companies are only 5 % per year in average seen over some years, although some TRADERS have earned at stupidity drive up the market to even more overvalued.... I prefer buying for less than things are worth  :) so I skiped looking "western" shares over 10 years ago and turned my eyes to SE Asia instead where there are bargains still...

Currently no I cannot I am building a trucking company and I am the highest earning driver in my company haha... Im still building its probably going to be about 10 years then I will have plenty of trucks and drivers and a couple office people to handle the crybabies so I dont have to.

I dont like dealing with the crying when im in PH, especially because the time difference.

Its not an easy profession but its a huge market with huge earning potential, hell I started doing 6 on 6 off as a company driver, easy to save lots of money when you dont have any bills to pay beyond your food in the US.

Personally I like to work still so I dont mind driving and doing calls and emails for the warm part of the year. I just hate this time of year been stuck too many places with bad weather wastes my time and no $$ comes when you sit around.

Eventually the plan will be realized, honestly I could live in PH with just 3 trucks in the USA... 1 alone brings in 7-14000 dollars a week gross revenue even on the low side after expenses and pay to a driver it still nets me over $500 a week on one truck and SAVING $500 a week for maintenance

Me and my wife moved to Philippines when I was 61 and my wife was 55. I retired from my job and moved here to retire and do missionary work.

I think that it’s best to move here when you have a solid financial base to do so. I would not want to move here and have to find a job to survive. They can hire locals here much cheaper than paying foreigners.

When I came here I was in good health which is important. We live in the province and health services are not the same as our home country. Coming here in our 30’s or 40’s would be a mistake for us. All that energy to expend and few financial resources is a mistake. Coming here in bad health and so old you cannot get around would not suit us either.

You must plan and do your do diligence to find out all you can about living here before you commit to do so. If you are not sure you can stay here. Then I suggest you put your stuff in storage in your home country. After living here for 3-5 years and you like it. Go back to your home country and settled things with your storage.

Poebhoy

The only down side to settling here is if you're health deteriorated saw so many foreign nationals left with nothing through medical bills and remember were paying for 4 beds 😆 there ruthless when there making up the bill for foreign nationals

Ummm... Depends on your financial situation. I am 63 yo, retired, and self-sufficient, so now is a good time to visit.

I traveled and did business in Asia prior to retirement, and unfortunately cannot recommend the Philippines as a lucrative place for business. Too much corruption, logistical complications, unreliable pwer/internet.

I love the Philippines. They have a wonderful educated and hard-working country, but there are too many barriers to entrepeneurs.

Well. SOME are hardworking, some are very lazy.

I have got through 5 of them. At one of them by my stubborness I even managed to make DTI change their registration system, so it started to function!!!  :)
But if managing to get through the 2 remaining obstacles with officials, then it will be a good profit, at least 4 times my investment to me AND add some jobs to poor locals paid some better than they are used to, which was a big part of the reason I started a business in the Philippines too.

@Cheryl

Good question Cheryl! I was 61 when I moved here in 2015. May time frame and in July I turned 62.

I moved here with my filipina wife who was 56. We moved back after we got our only daughter thru college. We made sure she has established first and was debt free.

It was the right time to come here. I had retired from the Marine Corps and Civil service. 43 years with government. Plus at 62 I would draw my social security.

This country was right for my age group because we were not to old nor to young and in great health. We moved to province which is excellent for us.

For me the age one should move here depends on the cash they have or have coming in. And that cash flow has to go well in light of where you are going to live. Someone having $3,500.00 and above coming in monthly can do really well provided it’s him and one other. If no pension I would say for me about $800,000.00 in savings would be nice to come with.

Don’t come to early in age you will get bored. You want to use your young to earn money. Not waste it and have to go back to work in your senior years. Please do not come if your cash low is next to none and nothing in bank!

Key is plan, plan and plan some more. We did and it’s heaven! Love cost living here😇😎

@coach53 For 'fricks' sake man, you do talk yourself some bull dust... You wouldn't last 2 minutes in a serious business discussion. You obviously like to 'grandiose' yourself, and don't have a clue at how to ... - @Daytripper

hahaha    I started LIVING of own business when I were 24yo.  Mainly distribution and PR. With tiny start capital I did grow it to 70 employees (115 in some months when it was extra much work).

I sold it when I got bored of it, except the part with acounting and business consulting service where for the consulting I charged ONLY a percentage of the improived result my clients got almost allways WITHOUT more than tiny investment for them...  And I earned very good by it by I managed make them significant improved result just by changing something in process,  Except one huge work I did for the second bigest such business in Sweden, when  they had  crisis in a region by the region boss had made huge mess, then I got the region boss salary plus biger bohnus than the salary for the solution. The HQ fired the region boss but without I fired anyone, I transformed it from crisis to their best region iin only 6 months said the HQ themselves and we got extra jobs when customers hesitated and wanted to test first.   I splited the region in two to save transport costs, found and tought new region bosses before I left..

And I started a software production in Russia for a client some after the Berlin wall fell,  modern FLAT type organisation which big part of the world havent implemenmted yet inspite of it was invented by a Swede (Jan Carlzon) 30 years ago!!!  The best developer I found stayed years because of he lked that organisartion freedom inspite of Motorola offered him 3 times as high salary than my clients afforded to pay. All "experts" at Russia said it was impossible, but I managed to do it anyway...  1f923.svg

So I cant be as bad as you claim...  :D

Slow startup in Phils because of the officials are so very slow at registrations and permits (6 got, one left to get) but I managed to make "magic"  :)  when I managed to make DTI change their online system so it functioned for our business type too...  When we get that permit, we can easy make the bought business worth much more than we bought it for. I expect at least 4 times my money in 5 years inspite of I pay the Filipinos better than they are used to.  We were suppoused to meet seller of additional business now, but needed to postpone by a bridge to get there was flooded, but if sellers description is true, then that business will be even a better bargain than the allready bought.

Well. There are obstacles but much better potential and opportunities for own businmess if the Philippines  (if have enough knowledge and enough start capital).  There are some foreigners who have succeeded with own business in Phils.  (Production and wholesale trade them I know of succeeded much. Some claim they earned ok at tourism (before covid). But I dont know of any foreigner succeeding in retail. The best I have heared in retail was only breaking even but it solved no need to support famiy-in-law by they earned by they worked in the business.

Yes. I have allways "Thought out of the box" in Swedish messure too, which have make me managed to make some things normal thinking people found impossible and wouldnt even think of trying...  :)  E g not many would have even tried to start the business I did grew to 70 employees with such crazy low start capital as I had.  (Started whole province direct because the best possible customer wanted whole and I aimed at geting them fast   :)   Recounting for inflation I had only less than 10 000 usd own capital and same amount as bank loan! I got that huge customer allready the third month after start, but that fast was LUCK by competition was crap and had screwed up total the work for that customer.)

I got that business idea, when I were employee in a big company with such service as a part - I thought I can do that both better and cheaper than they did  - and result did show I could   :)

@coach53 @coach53 I don't know why I am bothering to reply, because you are living in never-never land. @Daytripper

You go on claing that BS, inspite of I have DONE a lot of things normal thinking people think are impossible...!!!

E g I have led TWO sport clubs from bottow to Swedish elite in one of the most players sports in Sweden.  In startup of leading the first I said "Goal is to reach the second highest league" which the members found impossible, crazy, laughable and didnt let me try before I said I guaranteed the club will not lose money., but they laughed at my crazy goal still  :)  The first I did parallell to I had my distribution business still. Started with make a big youth sector from age10. When they became 15yo we started climbing in the SENIOR league system with only me as playing coach and one more player being seniors and when they kids became upper teenage then we reached the "impossible" second senior league. Then we had been the second best youth club some years allready. It ended with we even reached the highest league a few years later....

@coach53 @coach53 . I don't want to be judgemental, but do you realize your communication style is not suited to business? And perhaps, business acumen requires stealth, cultural awareness, politeness with authority. A refined approach, adapting to the environment.

I'm sorry mate, you are an open book. The World's worst poker player. Find your strong points, but please don't lecture me. @Daytripper

Who say I communicate like that with customers and officials?   :D   I both speak and write in very different ways e g when I comunicate with courts  - and winn big part of the cases even against officials   :)   in Sweden.  Against NOT officials I have 100 % winn if counting when I made the opponent lower the demand much at my client so that case never went to judge.

BUT to motivate and make employees and players in sports teams I have led to believe something "impossible" can be possible, I speak some like that  1f923.svg   which proven have made good results,..  E g when sports opponents where big 6 - 2 odds favorite or less then I made my team go for winn anyway  - and we managed almost allways!!   :)   e g when we got first lesague promotion with the kid players in senipr league.   (But I dont tell which sport because that would be same as telling who I am because I am national famous as leader in that sport by results - and by my "crazy" exersice methods which the National federation recomend some of since I led a second club to Swedish elite fast by that "crazy" method too...  :)   Several others are better than I at teaching the play itself in that sport but I reached the top results by superior mental development of the players making them believe "impossible" things can be possible - at least with my leading style   1f923.svg

E g when I started the "impossible" flat software development in Russia for client, I startted with telling the developers  "Its ok to call me idiot as long as you tell why and tell a better solution idea than mine   hajha"    to make them dare to tell me when they disagreed. This was after the Berlin wall fell but with the scary dangerous Sovjet culture never disagree still.  So they started to dare 1f44d.svg  so client got best possible development with that crew and very cheap.  Around only 1/10 of normal upfront by offered bohnuses of results to everyone involved. Some westerners worked for no salary, higher bohnus, So much less risk for the client than for normal such software development.

Edit : And now I have motivated TRIBE people, who never have got chance from malay Filipinos, very bad treated often by malay Filipinos.  It took a few months to convince their leader the very good offer I made them it isnt a scam. Earlier they have allways been scamed, except by an American, who I can thank I found this much better workers.  Beside  paying some better direct for labour work, they will get 4 - 5 million pesos as bohnus when its time to cash in if it become at the LOWEST of my estimates, to all who still want to work for us then.   (We pay NOT by time they spend at work but how much they get DONE. They got such from the American and LOVE it by they earn better by that by they work much better  1f44d.svg   than average malay Filipinos.)

@coach53 I'm doing my best to visualize you speaking in a Swedish accent. I guess it's a lame attempt at understanding your psychic. Where to begin?

I'm not interested in communicating with you.

I'm not interested in communicating with you. Forget about me, and spend the rest of your unfulfilled life dribbling to others on this forum.

 @Daytripper

Well. If you mean  clairvoyance I actualy predicted the stock market fall 1987 (?) by that  :)   a half year before it happened,

while the market fall 2000 (?) I predicted too a half year before it happened but that wasnt by clairvoyance but by logic thinking :)   I told both to people including a CEO in an investment company positioned totaly wrong, but they didnt listen...  :)

The general market fall 2008 I failed to predict  :)  but I had put all my money in a stock, which went UP almost 50 % that autumn when almost all other stocks fell.

@coach53 . I'm not interested in communicating with you.
