Quality of customer service in Indonesia

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Customer service can say a lot about everyday life in Indonesia, and for many expats, it’s something that could take time to get used to. In order to help expats and soon-to-be expats to adjust to local expectations, we invite you to share your insights.

How would you describe customer service in Indonesia?

Are staff generally friendly and helpful, or more formal and direct?

How do businesses handle complaints or requests for refunds?

Do expats get treated differently than locals?

Any tips on how to get the best service in Indonesia?

Share your experiences and stories, whether positive, challenging or funny!

Thank you for your contribution.

Generally it's good, especially if you are a foreigner. But not always. Always be polite and friendly. Don't act like you are better than locals.

Depends.

Pretty much everyone is friendly, but a lot of local 'warung' (tiny shops) will rip foreigners off. They earn almost nothing so I pay without question as long as it's a small ripoff. That  changes if they go too far.

Foreigners are treated well, often too well. We happen to be visitors, not visiting royalty, so always remain polite and thank the assistants for their help.

Refunds policy varies - The big trick is remembering this is a different country with different laws.

I took a bit of kit back to A??o, a large house stuff style shop. They wanted a month to refund a tiny bit of cash - a little polite firmness saw my wallet get the cash back immediately.

You also have to consider that many bits of kit has no guarantee,  so refunds are impossible.  Ask about warranties before you buy.
