Expats in Yogyakarta

daviddomoney

Hi All,

I wondered if there are many expats in Yogyakarta here?

What areas are good to live there?

Are there any events there for people in Yogyakarta to meet up?

David I visited Jogja a few years back as part of a train journey across Java from Jakarta. Stayed for about 5 nights at the Tentrem hotel (highly recommended) near the city centre. Frankly I was underwhelmed by the city although Indonesian nationals rate it very highly.  I came across very few expats while there but then I suppose I was in 'tourist' mode which is not the same as having my abode there. The main thoroughfare Malioboro st I found to be somewhat of a tourist trap as was the Borobudur Temple. Unfortunately I was there during school holidays so everything was packed out. I have never been one for crowds.

Thanks @Lotus Eater - interesting maybe Malang is better. Liked Yogyakarta when went last year but it was very busy.

Or maybe somewhere outside of Yogyakarta nearby but in the countryside like Sleman!

Hi David,

I have lived in Jogja for 2 years (after 10 years in Jakarta) and I certainly don't miss the hustle and bustle of the Big Durian!

Most of the ex pats live in or around the Prawirotaman area as it has loads of ex pat bars and restaurants in that vicintity.

There is a bit of a transit nature of ex pats although I have met loads of "long termers" and made many friends mainly in and around Prawirotaman.

Hi Darren,

Thanks sounds interesting, do they have a group that holds meet ups?

Will probably be in Yogyakarta next time visit my wife's family in the Kampung.

Interesting info for future visits. As long as it’s a backpacker ( no offence intended Fred) and digital nomad free zone.

I love the ‘ Big Durian’ though. Cosmopolitan with a great selection of bars and restaurants. It’s got a pulse.

I like Yogyakarta.

I can't remember how many times I've been, but it's a lot. I tend to avoid expat places because they have a tendency to be overpriced and nothing special.

Strange as it seems, I stayed in a few backpacker hotels and found them to be reasonable.

As for very nice hotels, the Inna is worth the money.

Yogyakarta is alright, but it's too hot. I've been there so many times over the years and seen much of what there is to see. Things I miss there are Mediterranea restaurant and visiting traditional markets. But it's definitely too hot for my liking and too rural for me. Kotagede is kind of nice.

It’s durian season this month 😄

If you like bigger durians & are around Jakarta, Depok (west Java), or Bogor, feel free to DM me. 😊

They’re limited though very popular & come fresh from the tree! 😅

Are those durians fresh from the tree for free? The ones here in Bandung must be bought but the fresh ones from the tree are not necessarily the ones that are ready to eat. Can you drop some of the free ones to me in Bandung?

Ryan_chaniago

Haha not free unfortunately 😄 they belong to the farmers.

But they’re usually cheaper than buying from shops since they come directly from the farmers, not mine.

These durians are tree ripened, so they’re ready to eat & honestly taste much better 😄

The tricky part is they’re not easy to get, because the farmers have to monitor the trees very carefully so the fruit doesn’t fall on its own.

That’s why they’re a bit more limited compared to regular market durians.

I love durian, but usually only buy from Rumah Buah when the prices are down. When Jakartans visit then the prices seem to go up a lot. But anyway, they are really delicious if you know how to choose. The supermarkets here in Bandung mostly sell not good tasting durian. In fact they even smell not nice for durian and still expensive. That's why I mostly buy form Rumah Buah but only when the prices are lowered. They also sell from trucks in some places in the city, maybe I will try those.
