Where can I buy some good quality kitchen cupboard handles?

Where can I go to get good quality kitchen cupboard door handles? I am happy to buy in person or online, but everywhere I have looked so far on French websites or in the DIY shops is selling absolute rubbish!

I thought France used to have a really good reputation for ironmongery, and back in the UK all the high-end lever door furniture and bathroom accessories I bought for my house refurb. project seemed to have come originally from Italy, which is not too far away from where I am. (73 Savoie.)

We have a tired but good quality Schmidt kitchen with oak doors and psedo-antique brass handles with the standard 96mm centres. I am intending to paint the doors in a matt stone finish, and add some brushed chrome or stainless handles. If that is not succesful I'll be looking at a new kitchen, but I want to try that plus the new handles first, and I don't want spray-painted plastic or other cheap-looking handles.

Any recommendations?
