How is Malta?

I am getting old and would like to live some where warm like Malta. I do not have much info about Malta, except I know it is warm, has a low crime rate.
I am not sure which places are quiet, clean and near to shops.
Initially I am interested in renting a place during cold weather in London (Sept - end of Jan).
I wonder if there are places that get a flat rate rent for 5 or 6 months stay.
I would like to stay in ground floor or a place with a lift.

I would appreciate your help in this matter.
