Hello,

Learning a new language is a part of the expat process. Let's find out how crucial it is to know the language in Cyprus.

What is the official language in Cyprus, and what are the other popular spoken languages?

Is it possible to live in Cyprus and get by without speaking the language?

How do you manage to communicate with the locals if you don't speak the native/official language fluently?

What are some popular and useful phrases that expats absolutely need to know?

Can you share some tips about how to survive in Cyprus on a daily basis without speaking the language?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Weve not really had an issue with a language barrier - it can be a little daunting at first but we always manage to get across what we are after or want - - it does have a tendency to be more prominent the further inland you go ie to smaller towns and villages where things tend to be more traditional..... but in any event its a good thing to learn the language no matter where you are   - locals will appreciate it for sure and its fun...

Most speak English or broken English so its not a problem really until you out in the sticks

I've tried learning Greek from DuoLingo but it doesn't give the context behind the language which makes it very hard to learn for me.

Duo lingo is good jst to get a feel but it is difficult  - many newcomers go to lessons (with homework to do) here so that may be a better option....

never needed it but i learn a little extra every day
