That is not true, at least with regards to TVs from the UK.  I bought a TV from the UK and it works just fine in Mauritius.

i brought a tv mind it was 8years ago but it did not work on the secam, thinks might have changed by now.
are you useing sat or digital box.
only thing i find bad in mauritius is the internet speed when i first came i was on 128kbs did increase but expensive compared to uk.

I bought a tv about a year ago from the UK and had it shipped down with the rest of my belongings from London.  It works fine for local programming connected to an arial as well as with DSTV.
