hello,

Ive read through the threads and havent found an answer. So, here I am. My husband and I have been thinking about moving... its always in the back of our mind. we have four children who are excited at the prospect of going. But, i have heard that its hard to gain long term Visa's unless we transfer through employment. This makes us sad. We really would love to go and just start over anew. Please, can anyone let me know the process of relocating and is it moderatly possible to stay in Amsterdam legally? Thank you in advance.

Hi Elizabeth,

Are both you and your husband American?  If so, it will be very difficult for you to relocate to the Netherlands.  I am an American living here because I am married to a Dutch man.  Your best bet would be to contact the Dutch Embassy in the states and find out for sure what your possibilities would be, if any.

Good luck to you and your family!  If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Take care,
Jess

Yeah, the IND website is also helpful.  The IND is the organization that you will be dealing with regarding obtaining a visa to stay in the Netherlands for longer than a period of 3 months.  As an American, you're only allowed to stay here for 3 months without a visa.  You can contact IND directly, but it's very expensive and almost impossible to reach someone by phone.  We've had to do it several times.  So, as I suggested before, start with the Dutch Embassy in the US.  They will be able to answer your questions and show you whether or not you and your family qualify to come here long-term.
